10 Most Sleep-Deprived Cities

Who's the sleepiest?

A new ranking, using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that was compiled by the mattress company Sleepy's, shows that some cities have it worse off than others when it comes to sleep deprivation.

The ranking, compiled from survey results of 350,000 U.S. adults, takes into account the percentage of time that a person doesn't have enough sleep or rest, as well as the percentage of people who say they don't get enough sleep more than half of the time.

Sleepy's found that residents in many California cities get the most sleep, including San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco. Other well-rested cities include Dallas, Texas and Richmond, Va.

Getting enough sleep is important to many things including the immune system. Studies show that people that get less than 7 hours of sleep a night get colds and flu 3 times as much as people who sleep over 8 hours a night. Now I do not know of any studies on this but it makes sense that lack of sleep would increase your chances of getting cancer including breast cancer. To help people to get to sleep or sleep better, they can do yoga. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton does yoga and her husband is a vegan!

Surprised New York wasn't number one. And Cincinnati, Ohio?

That's because the underpaid are stressing to keep up with there bills...

DC Up at 8 to work at 9 - breaks from 11-2 and ends the day at 3 -4 (maybe 5)... Bed time at 8 - 9 hence the problem

"The Washington, DC area has lots of cultural activities, entertainment, shopping, festivals, outdoor recreation, and great restaurants."

Notice Washington DC was NOT listed....

It may have nothing to do with the study, but I noticed all ten cities were on the eastern time zone.

Actually, OKC, NOLA, and Louisville are in the Central Time Zone.

How is Washington, DC, a city that runs largely on underpaid or unpaid staffers, not on this list?

Another list where I expected my city to be ranked highly. Wasn't at all surprised to see it at #1.

I understand Detroit, I'm sure people are worried about the economy there, but OKC and Birmingham?

Now I understand the affect this has on some of the leaders in these cities: confusion, irritability, and hallucinations.

Admit it, you were hoping people would be sleepless in Seattle.
02:51 PM on 10/26/2011
SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, I LIVE 43 MILES NORTH OF SEATTLE AND IT IS A GREAT PLACE TO SLEEP, GEORGIA BORN, BUT LOVE THIS AREA.....LIVE ON 5 ACERS, GIANT CEDAR TREES, AND NOW THE FOG IN THE MORNING, HEAVEN.
03:41 PM on 10/27/2011
Seattle is nice, but maybe we can attribute all that sleeping in Seattle to depression.
03:48 PM on 10/27/2011
CUTE COMMENT, BUT I LEFT GEORGIA AT THE AGE OF 42 BECAUSE I COULD NOT TAKE ANOTHER DAY OF SUMMER IN MY NATIVE STATE...I HAVE LOVED EVERY SECOND OF MY LIFE FOR 25 YEARS THE SEATTLE AREA, RAIN DOES NOT DEPRESS ME, SO MUCH HEAT DOES, SO I AM QUITE HAPPY. BE GOOD.

I agree. I think heat contributes more to depression and sleeplessness, not to mention irritability than all the cold and fog in the world. I'm wondering if these cities are sleepless because, in part at least, of their hot, humid summers. No one can sleep in that and even the air conditioning can't keep up with it. I was surprised that so many in California are well-rested. Sleep is a glorious thing to be able to have, and it's especially wonderful in cool/cold weather!

What happened to Chicago! That place is crazy busy, all day and all night!!
