Bank Of America CEO 'Incensed' That So Many People Keep Pointing Out How Awful His Bank Is

Bank Of America

I'm sure you remember where you were when you heard that Bank Of America announced that after receiving taxpayer bailouts, it was going to institute a $5 monthly fee for the privilege of using your debit card. "Well, that's exactly why I saved Bank Of America in 2008," you probably said, because you are a Good American. "I look forward to my new negative-interest checking account," you probably added.

Well, apparently you Good Americans are in short supply, because according to Bloomberg News this morning, BofA Chief Executive Officer Brian T. Moynihan has been inundated by a bunch of Negative Nancies, and the experience has left him feeling "incensed."

Bank of America Corp. Chief Executive Officer Brian T. Moynihan said he's "incensed" by public criticism of his company and is pushing back by reminding local leaders of its contributions to their economies.

Moynihan, 52, told employees in a global town hall meeting last week from the firm's Charlotte, North Carolina, headquarters that the "place to win the battle" over the bank's battered public image is at the state and municipal level.

[...]

"I, like you, get a little incensed when you think about how much good all of you do, whether it's volunteer hours, charitable giving we do, serving clients and customers well," Moynihan said during the Oct. 18 gathering. To the bank's critics, he said, "You ought to think a little about that before you start yelling at us."

Right! Did any of these complainers even "think" before they started "yelling" at Bank of America? Actually, as Bloomberg goes on to report, they may have spent some time contemplating the fact that "Bank of America ranked lowest in a 24-bank survey of small business customer satisfaction from J.D. Power and Associates this month," or that "Bank of America was named the country's second-worst company by Consumerist.com after BP Plc, the firm blamed for the worst U.S. offshore oil spill."

Why was Consumerist so hard on Bank Of America? Well, perhaps after doing a little bit of thinking, they realized, "Oh, hey, we've published tons of pieces attesting to Bank Of America's awfulness! Like the time the bank got an address wrong and foreclosed on the wrong home. Or the time they made mortgage payment demands from someone who wasn't their customer. Or the time they threatened a customer with foreclosure if he didn't make a prompt payment of $0.00. I mean, I could go on and on.

In fact, I think I will! Other Bank of America Greatest Hits include giving the same account number to two different people (isn't that a basic thing that banks are supposed to be able to handle?); opening credit card accounts for people who don't ask for them; "hindering" a federal review of FHA-insured housing loans; and two class-action suits -- one settled, one pending -- that arose when indifference to customer satisfaction crossed the line into grifterdom.

And of course, there was this delightful story:

But Brian T. Moynihan is done being persecuted, so now he's going to institute company-wide reforms to upgrade customer service at all levels cuddle up to state and municipal pols to remind them of all the good that BofA does in their communities to their campaign coffers. Although, for what it's worth, Moynihan did tell the attendees of an October 5 conference in Washington that he "wanted to stay away from the politics."

Ha, ha, sure!

I have BofA and I can really feel the hatred every time I swipe my debit card. This guy should take his customers' criticism to heart and realize that the corporation's business practices are morally terrible.

According to him, we need to stop yelling about the bad they do and focus on the good they do. So if he fed a homeless man, then went ahead and stole the homeless man's last $5... then we should just totally focus on how he fed the guy and act like stealing the mans last $5 didn't happen. If you want people to focus on the good you do, then stop being greedy and ruining people's lives in order to fill up your own pockets.

Bank of America has been notorious for its aggressive "fee" policy. They have treated their depositers as sheep to be shorn for years. This was the reason I left them years ago and moved to a credit union.

What a good CEO nad leader would want to know is "WHY'? Why do they feel this way about us.. and start there... instead of complaining about not be acknowledged for other "positive" deeds as he calls them..

I am totally disgusted with Bank of America. I will be closing my account very soon. They need us NOT the other way around. There are almost unlimited options for your banking needs without having to pay all these ridiculous fees. BofA just made a $6.2 BILLION profit last quarter and now they want to make us PAY to use our debit cards? It is just GREED on their part. I will go to a credit union or on-line bank for my future needs. Screw Bank of America. I don't need them anymore. I hope anyone who has an account with them will do the same. There are so many better options. Like I said earlier ...."They need us....we don't need them." So bye-bye Bank of America. I hope you go bankrupt!!!!

My friend has a Bank of America account. I told her to close it. She got hit with over two hundred dollars in "over draft fee's" here is the kicker. She pays ten dollars a month for over draft protection. It's not solely on them over charging their customers with a range of fee's they don't even support. It's that in my personal opinion they are an incompetent bank.

For me, BOA has been a good product. However, I agree with the criticism they've received.

I agee, people should stop hassling Brian T. Moynihan, the CEO of B of A. I mean his yearly compensation is a paltry $6.5 million and that represents a cut from former CEO Ken Lewis.

If you all keep bothering him you will distract him and then how will he be able to think up new schemes to bilk B of A customers and the community.

So please, leave Mr. Moynihan be. After all, theft is a demanding profession--ask any bank robber.

Well I am sure that Mr. Moynihan is well compensated to take the heat that he and his staff of senior executives has wrought upon itself. The $5 debit fee charge is ridiculous since the use of the debit cards reduces their use of paper, helps reduces operational costs and check processing staff. He may think that his community service actions have been overlooked but but when consumers are constantly being harassed with additional fees and only rich can afford to keep the minimum balances it makes the average person take pause and think is this the bank for me?

I closed my 2 personal accounts and 4 business accounts I had with BoA after they announced the $5 debit card fee. You should all dothe same. F them. As far as I'm concerned they should be paying me to keep my $$ with them. NO bank should charge retailers/merchants/small business like mine to accept their credit card.
