Grace Kelly Movie: 'Grace Of Monaco' Acquired By Studio

Grace Kelly

First Posted: 10/26/11 07:42 AM ET Updated: 12/26/11 05:12 AM ET

She left the big screen for good in 1956, going from "High Society" to the high society, and now, nearly 30 years after her death, the late Princess of Monaco will take another turn in the movies.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, European producer Pierre-Ange Le Pogam has won the rights to an in-demand spec script about one of Oscar winner Grace Kelly's greatest triumphs in her second life as Monacan royalty. The film will focus on the six month period in 1962 in which Princeess Grace used her smarts and charms to save the small nation's government from being overthrown by the French.

The basic history goes like this: French President Charles de Gaulle was unhappy that Monaco was a prime tax shelter for his citizens, and told Prince Rainier III that if they didn't change their laws in half a year's time, there would be repercussions. That's when Kelly sprung into action, using her smarts and charm on the European political system in much the same way she did in Hollywood.

Kelly was 33 years old at the time, a former Hollywood beauty who set the international stage alight with her smile and regality. She had starred in a long string of Hollywood hits, including three films for Alfred Hitchcock, "High Noon," "Mogambo," for which she was nominated for an Academy Award, and "Country Girl," which netted her the golden statue.

Given her young age and beauty, we set out to come up with a few ideas of who might be able to play the Princess. Some of them are a bit younger, some a bit older, and some right at that age; Hollywood can do extraordinary things with makeup. Let us know in the comments who you think should take on the role!

Elena Satine and Emily Deschanel (while not blondes - that can be fixed) have a classic look about them that i think reads Grace Kelly. See Satine here http://www.imdb.com/media/rm531806976/nm2180812

Diane Kruger could be good too... Keira Knightly, maybe Amber Heard. There are actually few on the list they offer that I think would work well. They need a Rooney Mara casting method - put someone in there that is seemingly unworkable and completely unexpected.

Paltrow should be up there. None of those other women have the look or feel of Kelly whatsoever.

christina applegate looks more like her than some of those women

" ... Kelly sprung into action, using her smarts and charm on the European political system in much the same way she did in Hollywood." Considering Kelly had a renowned sexual appetite in Hollywood, I hope the film gives names of the politicians she 'charmed'. In the film "Me and My Shadows", Judy Garland after just giving birth is in bed in her hospital room waiting for that night's Oscar telecast as she was up for an Oscar for "A Star Is Born" and against Kelly etc. Surrounded by her husband and friends, after losing to Kelly, one of her friends says of Kelly," I hear she's a nymphomaniac" and Garland responds, 'Only when she calms down".

Unfortunately Jan Jones has no film screen presence whatsoever. But she is pretty.

I have a relative who used to hang out with Princess Grace in Monaco--related to one of her relatives by marriage, as I recall.  She thinks Grace was a very nice lady.

What a timeless, classic beautiful woman.

Weird comments for a weird subject here.

It's a cheap mistake to do this.

Sure, there are lots of beautiful women out there.
But Grace Kelly was not one of the "lots of beautiful women".

As for her acting skills, "The Country Girl" shows what she could do when Hollywood wasn't trying to stereotype her by offering her roles in which they thought the public wanted to see her.

And then the style and clothes which money can buy... Well, the film above also shows her with very little makeup - it's quite a shock to see her first appearance in it - but she could portray classiness even in a humble role like that.

She may have been no saint, but her beauty always shone through.

Kelly was miscast in 'The Country Girl". The low rent character never came through. She got her Oscar for that film only because the high class lady went slumming and because Judy Garland, who deserved to win for "A Star Is Born" made a lot of enemies

Why do people need her to be a saint? It must be a particularly American thing.

I vote for Naomi Watts. She could pull it off.

People seem to forget that Kelly was a good actress.

I can't believe people are even comparing her to Watts...

That movie that took place in China Naomi was excellent in. The White Veil or something Veil.

Naomi Watts!!!!! Sparrow lady, did you fall out of a tree? Naomi Watts couldn't hold a candle to Grace Kelly.

January Jones came to mind before looking at the candidates, might be because Mad Men is set in the 60's.
Michelle Williams is going to be nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe, that might eliminate her from consideration. Evan Rachel Wood although extremely talented, is too young, Scarlett Johansonn doesn't have the necessary gravitas. Both Watts and Theron would be terrific, although I'd prefer an American actress myself.

People are projecting their own ideas about Grace Kelly unto the woman. Talking about her as if she were the classiest woman ever and this divine thing that no one can match. Well she was far from classy. She just dressed classy. And I've seen photos of her without makeup and the lighting and glamour and she was attractive, but kind of plain. If she were around today and doing the same stuff she was up to, she would be maligned more than Angelina Jolie for being such a homewrecker.

She just dressed nice, carried herself well, and photographed beautifully after makeup and lighting. It's the image that people blow up into something else.

Why isn't Cate Blanchett on the list? She's the only one classy enough to come close.
02:21 AM on 10/27/2011
Cate Blanchett is so much classier than Grace Kelly. I just have to laugh at all the people on here talking as if Grace Kelly were the classiest actress of all time. You clearly don't know much about her then.
07:05 AM on 10/27/2011
agreed...Grace was no princess, so to speak...personally, her acting in 'Dial M...' came across as wooden.

She was an excellent actress. It's the roles she got which were not the classiest of all time.

We all know about her private life.
But she was professional enough to keep that separate.
