LONDON (Reuters) - Nokia unveiled two sleek new Microsoft Windows phones Wednesday, a first step in the ailing cellphone maker's fightback against Apple and Google.

The flagship Lumia 800 and more basic Lumia 710 will go on sale in key European markets by the Christmas holiday season.

They are the first fruits of Chief Executive Stephen Elop's big bet on Microsoft software that spooked investors earlier this year. Analysts said the pairing remains well short of finding an iPhone killer.

"It's a new dawn for Nokia," Elop told about 3,000 customers, partners, developers, analysts and journalists gathered in London for the much-anticipated launch at the company's annual conference.

He said the new phones' minimalist design and superior navigation features would make them stand out among rival Windows phones, some of which have been faster to market with Microsoft's new mobile platform.

The Lumia 800, with vivid colors and a curved, black display, features live icons on the home screen that automatically update news, weather or Facebook feeds. It also boasts free navigation and Microsoft's new Internet Explorer 9 browser.

It will sell for about 420 euros ($584) excluding taxes and subsidies, putting it in the same bracket as Apple's new iPhone and Samsung's top-end Galaxy phones.

The Lumia 710 will sell for about 270 euros.

"These devices are a good start but the reality is that they are pretty much plain vanilla Windows Phone products," said Ben Wood, director of research at UK-based telecoms analysis firm CCS Insight.

"The real fruits of Nokia's and Microsoft's labors will come next year... but it remains a Herculean task to recapture this lucrative market from Apple and Android."

Others said that Microsoft's marketing muscle and Nokia's still-strong relationships with mobile phone operators should help push the new phones into the hands of consumers through prominence in stores and attractive package deals.

"The Lumia phones do have some strong selling points in their own right... and they offer a look and feel that's radically different from anything seen previously on a Nokia device," said John Delaney, research director at technology research firm IDC.

"These devices are strong contenders."

Nokia shares were sharply up before Wednesday morning's announcement but gave up most of their gains to trade up 1.5 percent by 1029 GMT, still outperforming a flat wider market.

The phones will go on sale in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Britain in November, with 31 operators and retailers providing marketing support, and in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan before the end of the year.

Nokia said it would address the crucial U.S. market, where it has always struggled, early next year, and mainland China in the first half of 2012.

Nokia also unveiled four new basic phones for emerging markets, where it still holds a leading position.

Nokia's market value has halved since February as investors are unsure whether it can ever regain its once-commanding market share.

Its third-quarter results beat low expectations, sparking hopes that the company can survive a painful revamp, but smartphone sales still dropped 38 percent from a year ago.

The annual Nokia World media and industry event in London where the launch took place Wednesday includes speakers from the world's largest carriers: China Mobile, Vodafone, Orange and MTN.

And to go with that the New York Times has a new review of Windows Phone Mango. Pretty glowing and even the couple of negatives are misunderstandings by reviewer. Like why doesnt Mango have better integration with YouTube (Google wont let them) and cant use Google search (Yes you can and there even is a Google app for Mango).

Shopping for a phone is now as mind-numbing as car shopping. I don't believe laptops are as different as smart phones are.

I used to use Nokia phones while living overseas. I love them. Easy to use and durable. They are pretty good. Can't understand why they are not popular here.

Nokia has announced its intention to jump into the smartphone war. And the release of the Lumia is a good start. As they are using MS Mango as the firmware, the will have the full backing and marketing power of Microsoft behind them. However, they fell short. If want to compete against the best then the features on your smartphone must at least match minimum consumer expectations. Not having a front facing camera was a big mistake.

Wasn't this the same phone that Nokia previously came out with when they were pushing their now discontinued OS? So they just dumped Windows on it and called it a new idea? Oh please
05:05 PM on 10/26/2011
well they are sold side by side ... no compromise in hardware you just pick the OS you want.

Are we still fighting the tired "I hate Microsoft" thing? I have been using many of their products for years and I am quite happy with them. I also use Google products and am typing this on a nice Macbook (best notebook I have ever owned) The new Windows OS looks cool to me. I have an Android phone now and am happy with it, but I upgrade every 2-3 years so next year I will be looking at these phones as well as new Androids and Iphones. Microsoft is an underdog in this market (unlike desktop computing where they are still a monopoly IMO) and have a lot to prove. If they want to make a great product, they have a chance to get my business. All the hating and name calling over smartphones. If I wanted divisive posts that make no sense, I will go back to the political section.

The price of the 800 puts it squarely in the same competitive ring as better phones from Android and Apple. So why would anyone in their right mind buy a Nokia? Cos they feel sorry for them?
05:12 PM on 10/26/2011
well there are many reasons, for me the biggest selling point is the native nokia voice guided maps. they can be stored on the phone so no Internet connection required, also another big selling point is gorilla glass (my phone right now has one and i never used any sort of cover or screen protector and there isn't a scratch on it, and i'm abuse my phones) that also brings you to build quality. So drop test an iphone vs this vs an android phone and we'll see which one you'll pick up in one piece. Also there is the wp7 which doesnt require huge memory and cpu to run smooth like android does and that means longer batter life. So actually there are many reason why somebody would want to buy this, you just have to realize what you really want out of a phone and not what the manufacturer tells you that you need.

Nokia needs to drop the Microsoft OS and switch to Android now... it's the only way they will survive.

Microsoft's OS is miles ahead of Android, so why would they do that?

If they went to Android, they would have to pay Microsoft $5 per device (as 60% of Android makers already do). Instead, they got Microsoft to pay them several billion $$ to go with their OS.

It appears to be more tailored to people who use a ton of social media. I personally do not care for social media.

I've always loved Nokia hardware.

But I'm quite happy with my 4s.
