Spiced Hot Chocolate

  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 5 ounces dark chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon regular cocoa powder, plus extra for sprinkling
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground chile powder
  • pinch kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup medium-sized marshmallows, store-bought
  • cocoa powder, for garnish (optional)


  • Place all ingredients in a large sauce pan and stir to combine. Set over medium heat and bring to a simmer then whisk vigorously with a balloon whisk to froth up slightly. For a creamier texture use an immersion blender for 30 seconds. Once mixture is steaming hot, serve in mugs with a marshmallows and a sprinkling of cocoa powder.
