Turkey Trail TrotFrom baby chicks to graying gobblers, runners of all ages are welcome to scuttle along the annual Turkey Trail Trot in Golden Gate Park. This Thanksgiving Day race has become a tradition for Bay Area families. Little ones can participate in the 100-meter Kid's Gobbler Chase, while parents can walk the three-mile Pilgrim Promenade or run the five-mile Turkey Trot. Raffle prizes, age group awards, overall-performance awards and holiday treats for the kids make this a fun-filled way to gear up for a day of cooking and feasting. Holiday-themed costumes are encouraged!
Hornblower Thanksgiving Day Buffet CruiseThe Hornblower Thanksgiving Day Buffet Cruise gives families a chance to play modern-day Mayflower by enjoying classic holiday fare while embarking upon a three-hour cruise around San Francisco Bay. Juicy turkey, fluffy mashed potatoes and spiced-pumpkin pie come with four delicious sides: that is, views from the port, starboard, bow and stern sides. Dressy-casual attire is recommended and reservations are required. Tickets are $85 for adults, $76.51 for seniors and military and $51 for kids age 4 to 12. Children under 4 are admitted free.
Volunteer: Wonder Dog RescueFour-legged friends need Thanksgiving love, too. San Francisco is notorious for having more canines than kids, so helping to care of a rescue dog is a great way to get into the Bay Area do-good spirit. Wonder Dog Rescue was founded in 1992 when Linda Beenau teamed with Nancy Ford to start a terrier rescue organization. Nearly 20 years and countless puppies, senior and special-needs dogs (of all breeds) later, Wonder Dog is still going strong, even attracting celebrity designers such as Mark Jacobs, Devon Thomas and Stevie Boi, Grammy winner Frank McComb and pop entertainer Nesta Rae to help fundraise. Wonder Dog Rescue relies on and accepts volunteers to help with grooming, walking, socializing and transporting dogs to and from vet appointments.
