(Reuters) - If you are looking for a way to rebel against big banks, you could just sit on your couch and scan a few checks.

How is that making a statement? Once you can easily scan a check and deposit it, do you really need to stick with a bank just because it has a branch in your neighborhood? The technological advance of smartphone scanning breaks down one of the last barriers to easy bank switching. As the practice spreads, there may be no stopping upstarts from cutting into the deposits of major banks.

The idea of switching out of big banks to smaller ones has morphed into its very own day: November 5 is Bank Transfer Day (see www.facebook.com/NovemberFifth). It was launched by Los Angeles art gallery owner Kristen Christian to encourage folks to pull their money from big banks in protest of their policies, from mortgage lending practices to the repayment of TARP funds to a constant array of new fees.

"Seriously, who likes going to branches? It's much more convenient to either mail checks or use cutting-edge mobile deposit technology," asks former Capital One executive Dan O'Malley, who is now CEO of PerkStreet Financial, one such small financial institution.

Mailing checks for deposit to operations like PerkStreet, State Farm Bank, ING Direct or a distant credit union has long been an option, but the growth and acceptance of deposit by phone could be a game-changer for many consumers, O'Malley and others say. USAA Bank has been accepting scanned check deposits for years. It caters to mobile military families but also offers banking services to the general public,

"In addition to reducing costs associated with mailing checks, mobile-based remote deposit makes it infinitely more convenient for customers to get money into their online-only accounts at branchless banks," O'Malley says.

Security experts say there is no particular concern to making deposits via a smart phone app. The main issue is being sure to take basic precautions with your phone, says Joseph Steinberg, CEO of the IT firm Green Armor Solutions. "You should have security software on your smartphone. You should have the capabilities to do an anti-malware check," Steinberg says.

Of course, using a phone to deposit a check isn't exclusive to upstarts. In addition to USAA Bank, which has but a handful of locations, big banks including JPMorgan Chase have since joined in.

Brian Ruby of Stratford, Connecticut, uses the Chase app. "It's very easy: endorse the check, launch the app, snap a couple pictures, confirm the numbers, wait for an email saying it's good and shred it," he says. "I don't get checks very often, and when I would they would sit around for a long time since I seldom visit a branch, so now I'm much quicker on deposits."

Depositing a check by mail is riskier scenario than a deposit by phone app, Steinberg says.

Online banking through remote Internet-based financial institutions isn't new, but is growing with deposit technology. At State Farm Bank, mobile check deposits are up 150 percent since January. Customers using the technology run the age gamut -- nearly 45 percent of mobile check deposit customers are 36- to 55-years-old, the company says.

In case you're concerned about the security of your online bank, check to see if your funds will be FDIC insured. State Farm, PerkStreet (through Bancorp Bank) and ING, for example, all are FDIC members.

Being a revolutionary is one thing. But doing without that government deposit guarantee? That's revolting in a different way.

As the Bible tells us, one of the signs that we are living in the last days, is that people will be ungrateful.

And especially here in America, the Nation God has so Blessed!

Whatever happened to 'IN GOD WE TRUST'?

Is God dead? (I speak as a fool).

May God Almighty Bless the United States of America.

there is another way to beat big banks,,just join a credit union if there is one available...they have everything a big bank does and they are a lot nicer to there owners,,the people who have joined...the only thing that i did with a big bank is use them to buy a house...put about ten grand in the bank,,get a platinum credit card,,,get a checking account and debit card..and then don't use them untill your bank sells your loan to another bank or money institution....then you get your money out,,cut up the credit and debit cardsand destroy the checks,,no more bank business

when enough people get fed up with being screwed and take their money out of banks they become insolvent and go out of business then the high and mighty big shots can wonder how to pay their bills too

This check-deposit by phone is not going to threaten the reign of the big banks. They would give them a greater hook for the tech savvy kids out there. Aaaaw, The banks got some regulation. The fees they charge retailers for customers using their cards got slash by a law. Well, God forbid they lose 1 penny in revenue. Somebody's got to pay, right? Maybe the customers won't notice. Guess what...we noticed and we're doing something about it! I LOVE my credit union!

If people didn't use the "self-check out" at stores and went into the bank instead of using ATM's and Online banking for every transaction or continued to pay bills by check, there would be alot of jobs that would have to be recreated. We need to think about the consequences of going along with "modern technology". We don't have to. Go to your local Credit Union and save a job.

State Farm Bank is awesome! It's a virtual bank meaning no branches, but you use atm's and they will actually reimburse some of the atm fees. Works great for me. Plus, the customer service is wonderful. Don't have to have your insurance there either. Although, agents will attempt to cross-sell it. Of course :P

I'm just waiting for the masses, if they decide to go along with this, to go out and withdraw their moneys. Over night the banks will collapse (again). And almost assuradly (spelling) our economy will fall shortly after. Shortly after that, Europe will go down, as will most of Asia, or at least the parts that we owe money to. Then the rest of Asia will go down. And before you know it, we're in the 1800's again. Yay, progress.

If you're THAT unhappy with your bank, leave. If not, these idiots need to back off. BA did one thing wrong-they borrowed and PAYED BACK EARLY and our mr. o administration apparently didn't like that. I have some bones to pick at Bof A, namely only one teller in town and if you only have x amount of money in your account and use a live body, it costs 4 bucks a month, now we live in Michigan, and it snows, is icy. My husband is in need of surgery, and if he falls over four dollars, guess who will be called up on their error. The big problem is that teller is open and exposed. I can park and watch all of the customers in like and tell you their business, including pins. Instead, I tell them what I've seen and how they can stand and protect themselves since BA isn't. However, I've not been charged by them, so that's a plus. I can get access to my buck or two when I need to, THEIR PARKI8NG LOT SUCKS though. They're within walking distance, and if I want a quick wd, that's good. They don't have the great perks that my other bank has, so far they have been okay, except once.

"Do you really nead a local branch...?" Yes. Would I use email, or any other to do my banking? Let me ask this: How much identity theft do you want? How long with an FDIC insured funds does it take to get your money if they screw up? Do you like being treated as a number on a page? And if they mess up your direct deposit do they want you to wait until the next month to get it addressed because "their bank is too big to track down an account number they f'd up putting it in? I'd take the local bank, the local branch, people who know me, and will give me the edge over the bank on charges. I'll take the bank that has forgives if you overdraw. And it's all free. Our town is so small I can walk to pay bills in an hour, pay them with check or cash. I'll go to the bank and get money so that the merchants in a struggling economy don't have to pay debit or credit fees either. There isn't a whole heck of a lot that I would buy online. Everything is available in my town, let the local people profit from it. It works out better for the community as a whole to be sustaining with jobs and things to do. Buying with cash, therei's not an imprint of habits-unless you want cards to get discounts and perks. Life can be when banking locally.

i kind of agree but reemember the only "LEGAL" tender in america is money...people do not have to take a credit card or a check,,not even a cashiers check,,but they do have to take money,,it is the law.....remember a payroll check is a piece of paper that tells you HOW MUCH "MONEY" THE COMPANY OWES YOU !!!

The best way to stick it to the big banks is to pull your money from them and stick it in a credit union. Go to www.bankrate.com and click on safe and sound ratings to find a five star small bank or credit union without all the fees near you. This is how you fight back.

The banks? Thank the liberal bank reform,, thank Dodd, durbin and frank,,, stop blaming the bank, they paid their money back,, now they have been "regulated" so as everything the govt does, cost the banks more so they pass it on to the consumer....... as for needed bail outs? Fannie and Freddie, and everyone "deserves a home",,,,,,,,,,, good job libs

You are exactly right. Every gov't program is abused. Gov't. creates the problems and we are to bail THEM out. Leave us alone......we will be just fine. If you saw Pears Morgan/Donald Trump interview last night, you will understand just how regulations are killing us. Obama talks jobs as he creates another regulation. Most Americans don't get it..........
08:29 PM on 10/31/2011
AMEN,, and the left counts on them NOT getting it.

oh, stop blaming the banks - the government is forcing them to give
excessive bonuses to their CEO's. oh, the pain and the shame!
