Human Rights Campaign: MSNBC Should 'Sanction' Pat Buchanan

Pat Buchanan

Another major advocacy group is calling on MSNBC to address the controversies surrounding analyst Pat Buchanan.

Gay rights group Human Rights Campaign called for the network to "sanction" Buchanan. The group criticized the network for giving Buchanan what they referred to as a platform "to spew...dangerous rhetoric."

The commentator has been under fire recently for remarks he has made while promoting his new book, "Suicide Of A Superpower." Buchanan appeared on on the controversial radio show "The Political Cesspool."

This led African American political advocacy group Color of Change to call for network to fire him. The book also contained a chapter titled "The End Of White America" and what Color of Change believed were racially charged sentiments.

The HRC took issue with comments Buchanan made during a Tuesday appearance on NPR's "The Diane Rehm Show."

Buchanan described homosexuality as "unnatural and immoral." He added "that kind of conduct should be discouraged in a good society, in a healthy society." He also told Rehm that "the argument that diversity is a strength is a canard. It is nonsense."

HRC President Joe Solmonese said that such statements were unacceptable. “MSNBC should sanction Mr. Buchanan, as his extremist ideas are incredibly harmful to millions of LGBT people around the world," he said.

Buchanan's remarks as a commentator on MSNBC have consistently made headlines. Just in the past few months referred to President Obama as "your boy" when speaking to Al Sharpton (though he fiercely denied any racial connotation to the comments) and said that African Americans were living on a "liberal plantation."

pat can dish it out and take it.

look, this is cable news now. i dont watch cable news anymore because of the internet. i can cherry pick clips. BUT its important for MSNBC's credibility to keep buchanan. TRUST. i'll bet you anything, matthews and maddow would bat for him. they need steele, buchanan.

joe scarborough has essentially converted. he's like the protestant who married a catholic. he has to go to mass, the kids are being raised catholic, but joe doesn't have to get baptized.

"and said that African Americans were living on a "liberal plantation."

And I wonder what part of the country he's living on. He's the ancient one here, not the blacks. He should be barred from bringing that Fox type thinking to MSNBC. Why don't he just go to Fox and be one of their contributors? That's where he belongs.

The fact that MSNBC needs to be coerced to fire Pat has been enough to make we watch less. They should recognize that his comments are mostly inane to begin with. We deserve better, and frankly I am not sure why we have to press so hard to get better.

The fact that they're even considering caving into the fascist thought police incessantly clamoring to silence the truth is enough to make me watch not at all.

leave this man alone. comparing his contributions to society and mine determine that his contributions are so much greater than anything I could do. And I believe that is true on so many levels throughout this blog. Mr. Buchanan, please speaking your mind!!!

Pat Buchanan does more damage to his ideas by speaking than could ever be done with silence. Let him speak.

Buchanan is a dolt. Must say I can't stand Diane Rehms either. That is one show I would never have given the time of day. Glad I missed it! I hope Rehms had the guts to call him on his BS but probably not. She is one of the worst of NPRs host / interviewers.

The southern strategy is alive and well with Pat Buchanan.

From the article: "Buchanan described homosexuality as "unnatural and immoral." He added "that kind of conduct should be discouraged in a good society, in a healthy society." He also told Rehm that "the argument that diversity is a strength is a canard. It is nonsense"

Oh dear. That is some incredibly hateful remarks! That dangerous rhetoric sure is promoting the demonization of of gay individuals... ... /sarcasm.

Is Pat a hateful individual? Most likely. But I think the remarks he stated are well said, and not hateful at all.

You can be against a sexuality, and an individuals behavior, and not wish hate on that person. That's what I'm trying to say.

If I were NBC executives I would not entertain any criticisms of Pat who only spoke the truth. Too many people and organizations with their biased agendas think they can dictate the direction of the Country and the world. Let them criticize to their heart's content!!!
