Israel, Gaza Militants Exchange Fire

Israel Gaza Militants

IAN DEITCH   10/29/11 06:47 PM ET   AP

JERUSALEM — Israeli aircraft struck at Palestinian militants in Gaza on Saturday who responded with a volley of rockets which rained on southern Israeli towns, Israeli and Palestinian officials said. Palestinian officials said nine militants were killed, while on the Israeli side one civilian was killed and four others were wounded.

Exchanges of fire are common between southern Israel and the Gaza strip controlled by the militant Hamas group, but this is the worst in months.

Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Adham Abu Salmia said nine people were killed and 15 wounded in separate attacks on militant targets.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said one Israeli civilian was killed and four others wounded when Palestinian rockets exploded in residential areas in southern Israel.

An Israeli military spokesman confirmed a total of four strikes in Gaza, saying the military hit Palestinian militants from the Islamic Jihad, one of several groups in Gaza which fires rockets into southern Israel. The spokesman said that the first attack specifically targeted a cell responsible for a Wednesday rocket attack that exploded deep inside Israel. That attack had caused no casualties.

The military "will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians," the spokesman said. He spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with military protocols.

The Israeli military released video footage taken from a military drone Saturday afternoon that shows Palestinians unloading rockets from a truck and preparing them for firing at Israel. The strike took place shortly afterward.

Abu Salmia, the Gaza health official, said five people had been killed and 11 wounded in the first attack. Islamic Jihad spokesman Abu Ahmed confirmed that one of its local field commanders, Ahmed Sheikh Khalil, was among the dead. He said Khalil was one of the group's chief bomb makers. "Today it was a great loss for us in the Islamic Jihad," he said. "The size of our retaliation will equal our loss," it said in a text message sent to reporters.

"Our response shall be in the depths of the Zionist entity," it said in reference to the Israeli heartland.

After the first airstrike, militants in Gaza fired over 20 rockets at southern Israel, Rosenfeld said.

Islamic Jihad took responsibility for firing the rockets in a text message to reporters, and released photos of the rockets being launched from the backs of pickup trucks. The group said this is the first time they are using this system as opposed to firing them from launchers on the ground.

One rocket hit an apartment building in the southern city of Ashkelon and injured a 50 year-old Israeli who later died of his wounds, Rosenfeld said. Another exploded outside an apartment building in nearby Ashdod, injuring one person. Israeli television showed about a dozen cars in flames outside the building.

Another Israeli sustained shrapnel wounds in the nearby town of Gan Yavneh and others in the Ashdod region were treated for shock, the Israeli military spokesman said.

Israel's Channel 2 television reported that one rocket hid a school, causing massive damage. No one was hurt because the school was closed for the Jewish Sabbath, Ashdod Mayor Yehiel Lasri said.

Late Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu phoned the mayors of cities hit by Palestinian rockets. Netanyahu said the military had hit rocket launcher squads responsible for the attacks and said "the military's response will be tougher if needed."

After the rocket barrage, Abu Salmia said that a second Israeli attack killed two people. Islamic Jihad confirmed that they were militants. Israel's military spokesman said that the second air strike had hit "terrorists that fired rockets on Israel in the evening,"

Abu Salmia said another Israeli strike late Saturday killed two more militants bringing the total to nine.

The Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad took responsibility for multiple suicide bombings and shooting attacks against civilians in Israel during the second Palestinian intifadah, or uprising, in the first half of the last decade.

Israel and Hamas, the militant group that rules Gaza, blamed each other for the flare up in violence Saturday.

"The Hamas terror organization is solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip," the Israeli military said.

Israel as a matter of policy holds Hamas liable for violence perpetrated by any of the different armed groups in the coastal territory.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum meanwhile said Israel is "fully responsible for all the results of this dangerous escalation."

In the winter of 2008, Israel launched a broad military offensive inside Gaza aimed at stopping almost daily Palestinian rocket fire at Israeli communities.

Since then, violence has continued sporadically along the border and Palestinians continue to launch mortars and rockets at Israel, but to a much lesser degree.

On Wednesday, militants fired a long-range Katyusha rocket that exploded near Ashdod in the south of Israel. Sirens also went off in the central Israeli city of Rehovot, which unlike many southern Israeli cities is not accustomed to rocket fire, causing panic. The Israeli military said the alarm went off because the rocket exploded in an area between the two cities.

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said that Israeli diplomats "will protest against the indiscriminate rocket attacks on Israeli civilians to the U.N. Secretary General." He said a similar letter sent after Wednesday's attack has yet to be answered.

The refusal of the PA accept land grants at the time, made the wars between Israel and its Arab neighbors an assured guaranty. When Israel won a war(s) it didn't start, it acquired the Sinai, and plus other high ground slits of land. The Sinai had all the resources, both financial, and energy, to support any endeavor Israel needed. Israel signed away those lands, and others which gave Israel a better defense vantage point, for the promise of peace in the Camp David Accords. Hamas and Hezbollah continued to kill innocent civilians, and even called for intifadas 1 and 2. Israel receives aid from the US in the form of weapons ones with huge price tags all marked up for our MIC to make a nifty profit. Then after enduring these attacks on civilians, and absorbing this debt in the acceptance of these weapons , the multi-billion dollar oil Arab propaganda machine, then blames Israel for needing the weaponry ie funding in the FIRST place.
Israel trusted its wonderful ally the US to ensure the peace. Egypt now wants to dismiss same accords. Same propaganda machine spends untold billions selling this idea of Israel being on American welfare, when every step of the way , it is the same entities accusing are those who are responsible for the current set of affairs in the FIRST PLACE. Still ISRAEL is getting all the blame

I don't mean to be augmentative, but because this an anonymous compiling, how can it be checked and re-checked for credibility. It has not one independently verifiable source by definition, even the quote accounts don't give names of dead etc. In an age when Arab oil propaganda money would rather spend 15 billion spending lie, then take even one of these families out of their tents, and build them a house, what does anyone know about the ethics of the compilers, the publisher, other deals they may be part of etc etc etc

The Palestinian people will continue to resist occupation. Most resistance in non violent. Not all groups can be controlled and will throw stones and resist with whatever means they can. Independent witnesses are beginning to tell the real story instead of Israeli spin.

$3,000,000,000 in US aid to Israel - annually

US Can't Afford Military Aid to Israel
During the Bush Administration, Israel killed at least 3,107 innocent Palestinian civilians, according to the Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem. Israel also injured thousands more innocent Palestinians and destroyed billions of dollars of Palestinian civilian infrastructure including homes, schools, factories, government buildings, and even Palestine's only airport. The severity and scale of this killing and destruction were made possible by hi-tech U.S. weapons provided to Israel at taxpayer expense.

They would have billions of infrastructure to rebuild if they had in fact used the billions from the international community to build said infrastructure instead of lining their own pockets, amassing caches of rockets to fire indiscriminately into Israeli communities, or paying off the families of homicide bombers instead of their people with a chance for a future.

UN Gaza Flotilla Report:
At 4.32 a.m., Israeli forces launched the attack without prior warning when several speedboats drew alongside the Mavi Marmara and IDF personnel commenced an attempt to board the vessel.
The speedboats were shortly followed by combat helicopters. IDF personnel began firing on the Mavi Marmara from both the speedboats and helicopters before boarding had commenced. This included the use of live fire (including automatic and semi-automatic weapon fire) as well as stun and smoke grenades, paintball guns and rubber bullets. Two passengers were killed by shots from
the helicopters before the first soldiers had boarded the vessel. The Captain immediately changed the vessel’s course to the open sea on a bearing of 270º, but Israeli naval frigates approached the vessel from the starboard bow and forced the convoy to turn back towards Israeli waters. Passengers on board the Mavi Marmara panicked and acted in self-defence to prevent the IDF personnel from boarding the vessel. Passengers threw plastic bottles, waste bins and chairs at IDF personnel attempting to board from the speedboats, and physically overpowered the first three soldiers to rappel onto the vessel from the helicopters but no guns or other weapons were used.

The UN flotilla report indicated that Israeli blockade of Gaza was legal. The IDF acted properly and the 'activisits' lost their lives or were injured as a result of their own actions. Israel was not held responsible. Turkey was criticized for allowing the flotilla to leave the Turkish port after the activists let their intentions to break the blockade were known. The so-called activists were itching for a fight to embarass Israel. The other ships in the flotilla changed course to Israel when confronted by the IDF and there were no confontations with the passengers and the IDF. The rest is propaganda.

No should be no peace talks with the Palestinians until:
They agree that Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people,
They agree that there is no ‘right of return’ to Israel in principle or practice for descendents of Arab refugees,
They agree that a final agreement will end all their claims against Israel,
Armed factions will give up all weapons and military equipment over and above those needed for legitimate police duties.
If the Palestinians cannot agree to these conditions there can be no peace agreement between the two parties. That will indicate for all that the Palestinians are not interested in peace.
09:35 AM on 10/31/2011
So you want one state.

I don't think it's the best solution, but since there is no reason for the displaced Palestinians to abrogate their rights without some sort of meaningful compensation, the only possible solution is a single state.

Now lets just hope that the single state has equality before the law and the protection of minority rights. No one here wants another theocratic, racist regime in that region (or any region, actually).

You clearly don't understand the idea of negotiation. Thing is, the status quo won't last. Your kind of thinking will not work for Israel over the long term.
11:26 AM on 10/31/2011
Any agreement with the PA without these conditions puts Israel in a worse position for defending its citizens. It cannot accept anything less as a precondition to negotiations. If the Palestinians can have preconditions then the Israels can have theirs. Fair is fair.

CAUSE AND EFFECT,,,,,you rocket Israeli civilians and you will get a heaping helping of response. The Palestinians murderers and maimers Israel released immediately visited Arafat's grave. The man who stole 3 billion from his OWN PEOPLE and turned down a Clinton brokered deal that gave the Palestinians 97% of what they wanted. Time to reject the EVIL WORM IN THE PALESTINIAN APPLE,,,,,HAMMAS who has hijacked the Palestinian reality. They are hurting the cause and are ''freedom killers'' not ''freedom fighters''. -- Treats Palestinians and other Arab children with heart defects at no charge.

--Supplies electricity to the vast majority of Palestinians.

--Under this "brutal regime" Palestinian lifespan has increased by over 20 years since 1967.

--Under this "brutal regime" four new universities have opened for Palestinians.

--Under this "brutal regime" the literacy rate among Palestinians since 1967 has surged from 40% to over 80%.

--This "brutal regime" eradicated malaria, which had been rampant on the west bank.

--Under this "brutal regime" Palestinian infant mortality dropped from 170 infant deaths per thousand to less than 60.

--This "brutal regime" graduated the first Bedouin gynecologist. Of course she is a woman, as it is unthinkable in Arab culture for men to be gynecologists. The old Bedouin men all shook their heads and said, "For a thousand years we have had no gynecologists and we did fine." Of course women have died needlessly for a thousand years, but women are faceless in Bedouin culture, and their deaths are unimportant to these men.

--The new generation of Bedouin is inching toward modernity. Israel makes that possible as in the Israeli democracy women are equal citizens - the only country where Arabs live to embrace the equality of women.

--Arab doctors, both men and women also work in Israeli hospitals - as much their hospitals as other citizens. They are full citizens with full rights, and participate equally in

Dear Friends and Family,

I heard the BBC coverage of Israel and almost puked. We 'took out' a group of terrorists about to deploy rockets at innocent citizens. The last 30 hours have been tense as they have sent tens of large grad rockets smuggled into Gaza through Egypt..

My daughter teaches in Sederot, where classes took place as the school has indoor bomb shelters on every floor. BUT in order to get to school she must travel 10 minutes... and cross a huge field.... if a color red siren goes off, she must lie on the ground as 10 seconds aren't enough time to reach one of the shelters around the city. She faxed worksheets and stayed home. Tomorrow she plans to go and may G-d watch over her! My other daughter lives on the top floor of her flat and has no 'safe area' she can reach in time, so she took a bus to her in-laws beyond rocket range.

Tomorrow again southern Israel's schools will be closed as they are unprotected and nobody wants a classroom to explode filled with pupils. (This happened in an empty classroom in Ashdod yesterday and during Cast Lead when lessons were suspended at a Beer Sheva school. On most days, many kids would there. Enclosed is my blog post, because the foreign media is making me so damned angry, I wanted you all to see what's REALLY going on here!!
