Occupy Denver Clash: Police Use Force On Denver Protesters (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

By KRISTEN WYATT   10/29/11 11:51 PM ET   AP

DENVER -- The simmering tension near the Colorado Capitol escalated dramatically Saturday with more than a dozen arrests, reports of skirmishes between police and protesters and authorities firing rounds of pellets filled with pepper spray at supporters of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Officers in riot gear moved into a park late in the day where protesters were attempting to establish an encampment, hauling off demonstrators just hours after a standoff at the Capitol steps degenerated into a fight that ended in a cloud of Mace and pepper spray.

Denver police spokesman Matt Murray said 15 people were arrested in the evening confrontation, where authorities were moving to prevent protesters from setting up tents in the park, which are illegal. Officals say the demonstrators had been warned several times that the tents would not be allowed and those who attempted to stop police from dismantling the camp gear were arrested. Protesters have been staying in the park for weeks, but tents have repeatedly been removed.

Murray said that most of the protesters were peaceful but there was "just a die-hard group that didn't want to cooperate."

"We showed great restraint," he said. "We were calm. We went in and did what we had to do. There's a group of very committed people who believe in a cause, and then there are a few people who just want to cause trouble."

Earlier in the day about 2,000 protesters rallying against what they see as economic inequality and corporate greed marched downtown toward the Capitol, setting up the most intense moments of the Denver movement, which has lasted weeks.

A group of the marchers advanced toward the building and some tried to make their way up the steps. About eight officers scuffled with a group of protesters and police confirmed that they used Mace and fired pepper balls – hollow projectiles filled with the chemical irritant – to break up the crowd. Protesters told the paper at the time that they believed police used rubber bullets.

Murray said protesters kicked police and knocked one officer off his motorcycle. He said five protesters were arrested, including two for assault and one for disobedience.

Chantrell Smiley, 21, of Denver, said she has been protesting downtown for more than a week, sleeping on the ground in the park. She said she didn't see the officer get knocked from his motorcycle and didn't see any reason for the afternoon confrontation.

"It was just chaos. This wasn't necessary. My friend got hit with rubber bullets in the face. He was screaming and bleeding, then they Maced him. We're being peaceful. We don't want to be harmed. They came through and took everything down – our food, our blankets, everything's gone."

Mike Korzen, 25, told the Denver Post that he was among the group that police dispersed with rubber bullets and pepper spray and suggested that the police force was excessive.

"I was standing there with my hands behind my back," Korzen said, using a water bottle to rinse pepper spray from his eyes.

After nightfall about a dozen Denver police and Colorado state patrol cars remained in the area.

About 100 protesters milled about, most coughing and sneezing from the haze of pepper spray and Mace that still hovered in the air. Some laid out tarps on the ground, preparing to spend another night outside. Throughout the evening vehicles pulled up, dropping off blankets and food with cheering protesters.

You know, it might be the law in some cities that a group of 40 or more needs to have a permit to assemble and express their freedom of speech, but are these laws legal? Why is congress forbidden to make a law abridging the freedom to assemble and freedom of expression, but city ordinances can? The inclusion of a provision that you have to have a permit to exercise your rights under the first amendment is, to me, an abridgment of that freedom.

There have been cases on the books that show that government agencies need to bend when it comes to the first amendment. For example, a community cannot pass a new anti-littering law just before a big protest march. Freedom of speech has been deemed in the past to be more important than having to pay some overtime to clean up some garbage.

There is a reason that these rights are in the very first amendment to the constitution known as the Bill of Rights... this one's kinda important and without it, the whole thing falls apart. I don't know, it might result in huge corporations owning all of the politicians so that nobody else could have a say in how they are governed, unless they agree with the party line... but that couldn't happen here, could it? The police shouldn't be baiting protesters just so they can bust some heads.

The show of force by the police was completely over the top. There were people standing on the steps of the Capitol. and the cops showed up in full riot gear acting as if the people were trying to bust down the doors - they weren't. The peaceful and uplifting march turned ugly only when the cops showed up ready for a full-scale WAR AGAINST UNARMED PEACEFUL PEOPLE.

I'm no cop hater and often defend the cops. In this case, though, I have to say that motorcycles shouldn't be driven into a crowd of people. The cop ran over the guy's foot and the guy shoved him as anyone would do in reaction. The cop then jumped off and pummeled the guy. The guy was not arrested, probably because the cops know they were in the wrong. Yes, it came from both sides but, in this case, the cops were complete idiots.

#OccupyDenver needs to stick to key issues, especially that of Wall Street Greed, and Control of our U.S. Congress. To find out how much raw power you have, start Demanding that
OBAMA RETURN THE MILLIONS IN WALL STREET CAMPAIGN MONEY.

You get Obama to do that and you''ll have real power in the streets and we who elected him will have at least some reason to hope he will cause real change after 2012. Otherwise I believe he will just continue to rule as a Moderate Republican.

Everyone is betting on Obama...but the Corporations bet on ALL of the others too, just in case.(When you have Billions, you can spread it around.) I would hope that any kind of expectations, or any kind of Loyalty to the Corporations that they might be expecting from the President, wouldn't be any more than President Obama is allowed to count on from them. This is the 2nd Term coming up. Everyone (most especially Obama) knows who the 'players' are and what they want. Now those 'players' have to understand it's not just the President anymore, it's the people in the Streets. Look at the amount of money the GOP has flushed down the toilet so far, in contributions, for that parade of Misfit Candidates? Work on Campaign Finance Reform and Term Limits, period. Now or later, it's always relevant, only for now- it is the way it is...

Is there anyone in the U.S. that actually believes that messing with a police officer is going to end well? Sheez folks, watch an episode of "Cops" for pete's sake.
;-)

The majority of the 99% sees that video and doesn't think of a righteous protest, all they see is an idiot screwing with an officer and getting his butt kicked. Absolutely nothing positive is accomplished by protesting physically against the police, including impeding their progress on/in a vehicle. Just sit down, lock arms, and force police to drag you away.

I guess that is why the movement grows larger every time the police do something like pepper spray some ladies contained within a fenced-off area, or throwing a flash-bang into a crowd of people trying to help a 2-tour Iraqi vet who was downed by a tear gas cannister (and ended up in critical condition as a result). The police are antagonizing people and using plain-clothes instigators to turn things violent. They know how to deal with violent. It is their preferred method. The protesters are, by and large, trying to keep within the everchanging laws regarding protest.

Where in the Constitution does it say that you need a permit to protest?

Is the Constitution even a functional document anymore? Or is it like a thousand treaties that were signed with various tribes, and then broken as quickly?
11:45 AM on 11/02/2011
The right of governments to require permits to protest is obviously needed. Do you actually think you have the right to asseble/protest in the middle of an interstate highway or city street? That would be crazy.

The question isn't whether you need a permit to protest, the question is whether one has the right to protest anywhere and at any time. And again obviously, the issue is where the rights to assemble/protest interfere with the rights of others.

And I'll assume the reason you didn't answer my two questions means you can't.

The assertion that the right to protest extends everywhere is ridiculously absurd. Do you have the right to protest inside my house? Of course not.

Do you want a world where protesters can harass women trying to enter abortion clinics (do you understand the 2 cases I cited?) Because if you actually believe the right to protest is infinite, then the rights of those women are being trampled.

Why did the police go in on motorcycles? There were plenty on foot and bikes. One video clearly showed the motorcycle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DoHDelbEAQ The policeman ran over the protesters foot with his motorcycle. Motorcycles even being in such a crowd was not good leadership. Another concern I have is reading where police are wanting to remove such video and photos from the internet. If they are so right in their actions why are they wanting stuff removed? Hickenlooper has changed his facebook wall page so ofter it is childish, each time I see such action I am 100% behind the 99% who are risking a lot for all of us.

How do you know why they were driving through there? They were most likely called to come and join another post. The guy in the video clearly moves his body in front of the bike. Your argument for the protester does not hold up. All he had to do was stand where he was before the bike got there and NONE of this would have happened. Then when his foot got run over he decides to push the officer over. This guy you are defending has very poor judgement.

Oh please get a grip it was a harley davidson motorcycle. You can go to the 16th mall and see that policeman sit right in it and get a photo of yourself with him and what you call a scooter. Even the press called it a motorcycle. And where have you read the man whose foot got ran over is filling a injury lawsuit? And where does two wrongs make it right?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DoHDelbEAQ Would you ride into a crowd? If you ran over someones foot doing that would you expect nothing to happen? It is a big bike you can see the front tire go up when he ran over the guys foot. So how innocent is that cop? I have seen him on the mall he knows better then to ride into crowds and to be upset when he gets a bit of a push? Please he did not have to go down he choose to go down so he could bully a person. This who thing has got out of control and our Govener is to blame.

Did you hear that Higgenlooper and the good Denver Mayor tried to copyright "Occupy Denver" so the protesters couldn't use the name in signs and on TV etc. How's that for BS.

The Mayor and Governor are going to be one-term politicians at the rate they are going.

I have not seen this information posted on any media outlet could you please post a link so we can see this for ourselves? Now in regards to hickenlooper doing this I am not shocked more amused then anything. I do think his time at thehelm is ending he is running scared. Scared people do foolish things and so far this seems to be his plan. Being foolishing seems to work for his right now.

“The challenge remains. On the other side are formidable forces: money, political power, the major media. On our side are the people of the world and a power greater than money or weapons: the truth.
Truth has a power of its own. Art has a power of its own. That age-old lesson – that everything we do matters – is the meaning of the people’s struggle here in the United States and everywhere. A poem can inspire a movement. A pamphlet can spark a revolution. Civil disobedience can arouse people and provoke us to think, when we organize with one another, when we get involved, when we stand up and speak out together, we can create a power no government can suppress. We live in a beautiful country. But people who have no respect for human life, freedom, or justice have taken it over. It is now up to all of us to take it back.â€

Whew, law this, law that. Lotsa barroom lawyers here bloviating over rights and law and Constitution. Where was the law when the 1% was selling collateralized mortgages to the suckers and then betting against them? Where was the justice when people were evicted from their homes and robbed of their investments so the plutocrats could throw another black-tie dinner and join another club? Where was the Constitution when people's jobs were sent to Asia and the sub-continent?

It's lucky my ancestors weren't so damned worried about the finer details of the law when they ran down to Boston and popped off a few hundred redcoats in 1775 or we'd all be bowing to Queen Elizabeth and sayin' "blimy."

Take a look at that huge park behind the reporter in the clip. Homeless people live in that park, junkies sell drugs in that park, huge events with 10,000s of people go on in that park all the time ... yet Occupy Denver can't put up a tent there. Instead, our two-faced governor issues the order to send in riot police to tear down tents and mace and beat down brave people who are finally putting a spotlight on some of the worst income disparity and social injustice in the world -- right here in the good ol' USA.

There were very few antagonists in the crowd-and even these were unarmed. Not all of the DPD are bullies, as demonstrated in the video, and through records of other incidents, but too many are, and they have gotten away with it.
The key here, is that those in society who have been given authority By US, must show restraint and professionalism within the perimeter of their authority or they are more guilty than those they are attempting to restrain, as they consider themselves above the laws they are paid to enforce.
