A 6-year-old girl was killed Saturday night after a car struck her and a 16-year-old family friend as they crossed a street in a crosswalk on Chicago's South Side.

Diamond Robinson was struck about 8:20 p.m. near the intersection of 70th and Loomis in the city's Englewood neighborhood, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Driver Thomas Young, 36, was reportedly heading south on Loomis before striking the pair. Young reportedly got out of the car and held Diamond until paramedics and police arrived on the scene. The 16-year-old girl with the young girl at the time of the collision sustained a broken arm.

Diamond, a Brownell Elementary first grader, was pronounced dead about two hours later at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Family remember Diamond as "very happy." She loved dolls, cookies and candy, the Tribune reports. A makeshift memorial dedicated in her memory has been erected at the scene of the tragic collision.

Young has been cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, driving too fast for conditions and driving without insurance.

There is always such deep sorrow for parents when a child dies and sadder still when other young ones see it happen. I wish the very best for all of them in coping with their grief.

Perhaps Chicago should consider issuing automobile ordinances modeled after their fire arm ordinances.
