Leonardo DiCaprio In 'The Great Gatsby': Star On Set (PHOTOS)

Posted: 10/31/11 11:10 AM ET

He made drifting proletariat from 1912 look like a dream, and over a decade later, Leonardo DiCaprio has moved up the ladder to 1920s socialite.

Note: he's still very handsome in these expensive Jay Gatsby duds.

DiCaprio was snapped on the Australian set of "The Great Gatsby" late last week, rocking a tan suit and a top hat turned just right. Earlier last week, Isla Fisher, who plays Myrtle, was seen in a very risque outfit (well, for the times).

We also see some fantastic shots of Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, and Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton playing Daisy and Tom Buchannan, respectively. Also, some super fancy cars. And if you want to see Leo in another period piece, click here to see photos from his upcoming turn in "J. Edgar."

I remember when I first read The Great Gatsby right after watching Leo's movie, "Catch Me if You Can" and thought to myself how he would be perfect for the role. Must've had an early premonition or something.

About the criticisms below of casting DiCaprio in a role that some think was owned and mastered by Redford...

The problem with both DiCaprio (age 37) and Redford (at the time, 38) are significantly older than Jay Gatsby. And they LOOK it.

DiCaprio does not look 30, not at all. Redford, in the 1974 version, even less so. And Toby Maguire no longer looks like he's 29.

That's a problem with a specifically "generational" novel, and a story that is very deliberately about the YOUTHFUL post-war generation.

The characters in "Gatsby" are not supposed to be just a few years short of 40, and certainly aren't supposed to look it. This was a failure with the 1974 film version, and is poised to be a failure for this version.

Could have easily cast age-appropriate performers like Ryan Gosling as Gatsby, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Nick, someone with some age-appropriate menace like Tom Hardy as Buchanan...

Adaptations change all the time once they're on the big screen. Very few movies follow the original book. Morgan Freeman's character in 'The Shawshank Redemption' was a red haired Irishman. The movie and story was still very good. The same goes for Denzel Washington's character in 'The Pelican Brief'. The movie and story are still very good. As for age, that really doesn't sound like something people will care about. How many TV shows are played by actors in their mid 20s playing high school kids? In the end, the success of the movie will be dependent upon how well it's acted and how the director conveys the story. DiCaprio, Maguire, etc are there because they're quality actors but also because they want the movie to make money.

And there are adaptations that fail utterly because of bad decision-making...

Need one list them?????????

Wow. Your casting suggestions are dead-on. These 3 actors, with Carey Mulligan as Daisy, would embody these young characters perfectly. I agree that the cast should be younger--their youth is a very important facet of this story that shouldn't be ignored. The narrative looks strange on film with people who look so much older than their characters would be. Clearly, you should have been consulted on these casting decisions!

Robert Redford will always be Gatsby to me.

Hollywood never learns. This is the fourth time Gatsby has limped to the screen. The problem is that it's a very internal novel about emotions, not actions. Not much happens, other than a few parties and a few deaths. A Luhrman version will face the same challenges. but with edits every 1.5 seconds. No thanks.

gatsby - gag me.

...this is being shot in 3-D why?

I have no idea and that's been one of my biggest problems with this production too - apparently it's just really important for that green light at the end of Daisy's dock to pop out at the audience. I suppose I should just be happy he's not turning it into a musical though, right?

Does nobody read any more? The items written about this film disturb me because the writers seem unfamiliar with a novel that ought to be familiar to everyone who calls himself or herself a writer in America.

Let me fill in the blanks. Jay Gatsby was a bootlegger. He was not a notorious cad, as some other film writer claimed. He was not a socialite, as this article claims.

Fitzgerald wrote Gatsby as a man who grew up without wealth, enlisted as a soldier, came home from WWI, and made his wealth from Alcohol Prohibition, as an alcohol trafficker back when alcohol was an illegal drug.

Gatsby is not the villain in the story, by the way. he turns out to be the victim.

I've read the book before, but did you really have to give away a major plot point in your final sentence? Not everyone will have read the book.
03:24 PM on 10/31/2011
I get his point though. It should be as well known as The Wizard of Oz but alas it isn't. I didn't read it until my early twenties and wondered why I didn't have to read it in high school. Though to play devil's advocate though the book, and Fitzgerald himself, does have it's detractors among the literary crowd.

Australia? Why? It is such an American/Long Island story.

The flashing red light on the beach. Boardwalk Empire is filmed in Canada. Baz Luhrman is an Aussie.

I've read that it's filmed in Brooklyn, NY.

Relax, the story is not SET in Australia. The story continues to be set in East and West Egg, and New York City, and continues to be an American/Long Island story.

The bulk of filming is being done in Australia because there are countless locations there that can double quite well for locations in the novel, and probably at 25% of the cost.

Hollywood routinely uses non-US film locations, even when a story may be set in the US - it saves $$$millions.

That movie was horrible!

Strongly disagree. Gatby's a guy who wants to rewrite his past. Redford always looks like a guy who was born rich. Redford was all wrong for the part. When I read the book (prior to the Redford movie), the guy I always pictured was Steve McQueen. Gatsby should be a little dangerous. I think DiCaprio is a great choice.

Unfortunately, I think it's the wrong director.
