Occupy Wall Street Contends With Winter Weather In East, Arrests Out West [LIVE UPDATES]

Occupy Wall Street Live Updates

Protesters camped out in Zuccotti Park contended with snow, wind, rain and unseasonably cold temperatures for the first time Saturday as the Occupy Wall Street movement began its seventh week in New York.

"It's definitely tough," Daniel Thorston, a protester from Syracuse, N.Y., said on Saturday of the weather. Asked whether the protesters could survive the coming winter, Thorston said Zuccotti Park need not remain the central hub of the Occupy movement if conditions become unlivable, emphasizing the "decentralized" nature of a movement that he says can shift from city to city. Though conditions were uncomfortable in New York -- city officials removed a gas and diesel generator the day before the storm citing safety concerns -- Thorston said the protesters don't have plans to stop spreading their message.

"People aren't going to give up fighting the system because it's cold out," Thorston said.

Still, the values of the growing community in New York are being put to the test as increasing numbers of what the New York Daily News calls "lawbreakers and lowlifes†have taken up residence in the Zuccotti Park's west side. Jeff Smith, a member of the Occupy Wall Street press working group, told the Daily News that the rift between the protesters and the hangers-on has become more noticeable in recent weeks:

"I mean you wouldn't see somebody at the General Assembly smoking a joint," said Smith, reflecting the frustrations shared by many working group members who have invested their time and energies in the occupation. "But in the back, they’re selling crystal meth."

Even if the protesters are momentarily plagued by internal rifts, they seem to be getting support from the outside. The demonstrations in New York have raked in nearly $500,000 so far, but they've only spent slightly more than $50,000, the Associated Press reports.

In other cities around the country, Occupy protesters contended with more than just weather -- many faced arrests over the weekend. Officers in riot gear arrested fifteen people over the weekend in Denver as Occupy protesters attempted to illegally set up tents in a park. In Austin, 37 protesters were arrested after police clashes.

Progressive activist and documentary filmmaker Michael Moore lent his support to the Occupy Oakland protesters Friday after the group clashed with police and faced mass arrests last week.

When an Occupy Miami member offered evicted protestors vacant apartments in a building he owns in Downtown Miami's Overtown neighborhood, it seemed like the perfect solution: the 'Peace City' space would provide headquarters for the movement and shelter a small faction of the group's most vulnerable members. But it hasn't gone well. Other tenants say the building has become a cesspool of drug use and violence while non-resident Occupy Miami members are trying to distance themselves from the 'radicals' -- all while the two factions are wrestling for control over Occupy Miami's social media sites and future plans.

From the Miami New Times:

The feud between the Overtown occupiers and more mainstream members has only gotten worse. The two factions are now battling for control of Occupy Miami's social media sites. The movement's main Twitter account recently announced it had been "hijacked by a small, non-consensus group of radical members." The Occupy Miami Facebook page was also temporarily hacked by someone inside Peace City. Meanwhile, the Overtown occupation is slowly driving away more moderate members.

"This is a black eye on the Occupy movement," says Shannon Reaze, an Overtown community organizer and Occupy Miami supporter who is now helping tenants move out of Paz's building. "The violence and drugs going on here are way outside of what I thought Occupy stood for. This place is destabilized."

...The supposedly hard-core activists here spend their days drinking and getting high. And as Peace City devolves into lawlessness, the most committed occupiers are leaving. Local landowners and politicians want the place shut down, while cops are suspicious. Yet as long as Paz wants the protesters around, nothing short of a demolition order can keep them out.

WASHINGTON -- Occupy DC has a new lawsuit involving tents on its hands. But it doesn't involve temporary structures in McPherson Square.

Two protesters arrested during a February action outside Merrill Lynch's offices on 15th Street NW near McPherson Square have filed suit against the Metropolitan Police Department, Legal Times reports. (Read the complaint here.)

The plaintiffs, Samuel Dukore and Kelly Canavan, were part of a "targeted occupation" of Merrill Lynch on Feb. 13 where protesters were raising awareness about Merrill Lynch's reportedly close ties with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.). Issa, for his part, claims that the reports of these close ties are "wildly inaccurate."

OWS reports via its website:

After the brutal attack on the attempted re-occupation of Liberty Square by NYPD on the 6-month anniversary of #OWS, a number of Occupiers have relocated their base of occupation to Union Square in midtown Manhattan, a point of convergence for several #OWS protests over the past 6 months.

According to reports on the ground, several dozen people slept in the park after the illegal and violent raid on Liberty Square. Over 70 people remain, now on Day 3. Although tents and tables are still banned, Occupiers have brought blankets and sleeping gear. Many are calling it ¨the new Occupation.¨ In addition to holding General Assemblies, Union Square Occupiers are providing vital jail support for those arrested on #M17 as they are released from NYPD custody. So far, the NYPD has made no attempt to remove Occupiers or prevent them from sleeping in the park.

The woman had the apparent seizure has been identified by the New York Observer as Cecily McMillan:

Cecily McMillan, an Occupy Wall Street activist once profiled in Rolling Stone, suffered a seizure Saturday night during protest action near Zuccotti Park. Many on-scene reported Ms. McMillan had trouble breathing after she was tackled and handcuffed by law enforcement.

A video uploaded to Youtube late Saturday night purports to show the attack. Two women can be heard commenting, “There’s Cecily,†then there is confusion as the police clearly perform a violent take-down on someone in the crowd.

According to Jeff Sharlet’s November, 2011 article about the Occupy Movement, this may be Ms. McMillan’s second violent encounter with police.

The paper reports from last night's chaos at Zuccotti Park:

At one point, a woman who appeared to be suffering from seizures flopped on the ground in handcuffs as bystanders shouted for the police to remove the cuffs and provide medical attention. For several minutes the woman lay on the ground as onlookers made increasingly agonized demands until an ambulance arrived and the woman was placed inside.

By 12:20 a.m., a line of officers pushed against some of the remaining protesters, forcing them south on Broadway, at times swinging batons and shoving people to the ground.

Kobi Skolnick, 30, said that officers pushed him in several directions and that as he tried to walk away, he was struck from behind in the neck. “One of the police ran and hit me with a baton,†he said.

Mr. Paul the majority think that Gov has been too handicapped and that the 1% should be taxed more. Most don't trust the Fed, as the majority of you supporters don't, but think the wealth gap and money in politics are the biggest problems, along with more taxation of the uber rich.

Stop trying to spin it otherwise to get more tea party member involved. The last thing OWS needs is tea party members starting fights with the primarily progressive OWS types.

Last night I noticed a perfect halloween metaphorical haunting of this forum by monied elite (educated) ghoolies and gob_lins of the republi_con persuasion; all over it into the night. A perfect metaphor for online trickster treats and what a laugh to see the demeaning attempts to mock and belittle sincere calls for reform, much needed reform, by "those who have theirs, and to heck with the rest" on All Hallows Eve was priceless; a real 'haunting' moment.
The lack of compassion displayed would make the Great Ones cringe. I'm too tired to quote anyone now, but I'd suggest a remedial course in Gandhi, the Dalai Lama, and MLK be mandatory coursework in business schools from now on; definitely in High Schools nationwide.

I wonder how the stock market will react if there is a big run on the TBTF banks.

Massive liquidity draws and account closires and mass transfers of mortgages into local, community-based banks like credit unions and smaller banks would send them a good message,

I think it would be a nice way to correct the Dow.

It's too bad that these folks don't look at their "creative" passion and find a productive purpose for it, like starting a small business instead of playing the victim role. I'm amazed that they fail to see their own potential and even more amazed that they fail to realize that small business is the end-around on corporate greed.
12:06 AM on 11/02/2011
Victims? Spoken like someone with no understanding of or appreciation for people generous enough to participate in their own government by using their First Amendment right to try and prevent fraudsters from melting down more jobs and pensions.

Maybe read up on your history and find out why this country once inspired people around the world.

Working people called the tea party inspire. They get a permit ...voice their opinion on how their money is to be spent..clean up..go home and vote for the candidates they want...remember 2010? These "occupy" groups want nothing more than a handout, a free month long Party and to be viewed as VICTIMS. I have a great appreciation for the history and the sweat of working people who have for the last 200+ years made the USA the greatest. This 1st Amendment arguement used to break the law is seen right though by all who really love and respect the Constitution!!!!

OWS participants are not playing victim

have you been to an Occupy event in your city? have you talked to anyone who is serving at one?

they are not acting, claiming or being victims; they are calling for an end to corporate personhood and reducing the influence of business in government. that's powerful!

they are doing it in a way that is most effective for individuals who don't have a lot of money: through collect action -- that is, lots of people collecting together to raise a common voice about the issues and problems that concern them. that's powerful!

this is their passion and their creativity

Even a band of chimpanzees has government. A herd of cows has government. We as individuals have government, because we "govern" our own behavior...we "govern" the behavior of our kids. Government is as old as life. Calls by the far-right to abolish government are absurd anarchist/greed fantasies. Everyone wants to be "the man", but no one wants to have humility, or give any credit to others. Loyalty and service are admirable qualities, as well as respect for legitimate democratic authority in a free society. Abolishing government = rule by the rich/corporate powers = handing over "we the people" to the Donald Trumps of the world = "Government free" prison, with the Donald Trumps of the world as wardens.
08:34 PM on 11/01/2011
Who on the right is calling for the abolishment of government? The anarchists are on the left, you silly lib. Do you think before you speak? Or just shuffle your lib talking points like a slot machine and hope they line up?
08:46 PM on 11/01/2011
And the fascists are on the right. Mussolini said “Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power†and that has what this country has become.`
11:20 PM on 11/01/2011
So libertarianism is a right wing ideology, but libertarianism taken to its extreme is "on the left"? How does that work?

I've seen a lot of people posting that the protesters are crapping and urinating in the street, with mattresses strewn about for sleeping. I guess when the Wall Street stockbrokers walk outside from work they'll see what the U.S. will look like when they finally get their much coveted "government free" society. No government = no order/chaos....pay your taxes, support democracy, support the poor, the elderly, support the mentally and physically handicapped. It seems to be the rich who are whining about paying taxes, paying a fair wage and following various laws regulating business......now who are the whiners again?. Think about that carefully as you recline in your Mercedes and type insults into your $600 dollar android phone, insulting the demonstrators.
