More details continue to emerge surrounding the sexual harassment allegations leveled at GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain.

According to a report from The New York Times, one of Cain's accusers was paid a year's salary in severance following an alleged incident involving the former Godfather's Pizza CEO. From the Times:

The National Restaurant Association gave $35,000 - a year's salary - in severance pay to a female staff member in the late 1990s after an encounter with Herman Cain, its chief executive at the time, made her uncomfortable working there, three people with direct knowledge of the payment said on Tuesday.

The Times provides further details on the alleged encounter. "Four people with contemporaneous knowledge of the incident said the encounter had taken place in the context of a work outing during which there was heavy drinking, a hallmark, they said, of outings with an organization that represents the hospitality industry," reports the paper.

The severance payment development comes on the heels of a Washington Post report from earlier Tuesday explaining that a second Cain accuser wants to speak out about an alleged incident involving Cain. The woman is reportedly barred from discussing the encounter due to a nondisclosure agreement that she signed with the National Restaurant Association.

Cain, appearing Tuesday night on Fox News' "Special Report With Bret Baier," responded to the Washington Post article. Baier asked Cain if he would request that the National Restaurant Association waive the nondisclosure agreement so that the accuser could tell her side of the story. The Republican contender responded, "I can't answer that now" due to "legal implications."

A CBS News report adds a twist involving the nondisclosure agreement. Joel Bennett, the lawyer for one of the accusers, spoke to CBS following interviews that Cain gave to PBS and Fox News in which he recalled details of one of the alleged incidents. From CBS News:

Bennett said Cain was talking about the case of another woman, not his client. But Bennett said now that Cain is talking about specifics, the confidentiality agreements may no longer be binding.

"I think the National Restaurant Associaion ought to waive the confidentiality and non-disparagement provisions and let the two women, if they choose to do so, come forward and tell their stories so that it can get a complete public airing," Bennett said.

Cain has gone on a media tour over the past few days attempting to explain away controversial sexual harassment allegations. A video montage of Cain's media appearances can be viewed below:

A relative unknown upon his entry into the race, Herman Cain has experienced promising numbers in both name recognition, as well as the new metric of "positive intensity." These upward trends have since propelled him to the top of many GOP primary polls.

In late June, a Gallup poll showed Cain's name recognition up 25 percent from earlier in the year, to 46 percent. Meanwhile, his positive intensity score stood at 24, among the highest of any candidate in the field.

Enthusiastic supporters have also helped Cain take impressive wins at a variety of early straw poll events. He's taken the top spot at the Western Conservative Summit, the Georgia GOP Straw Poll in August (Georgia is Cain's home state), and more recently in Florida and Chicago.

Cain also won a February straw poll at an Arizona Tea Party event, beating Ron Paul in a vote among attendees, though at the time he was the only officially declared 2012 candidate involved.

Shame on you Cain! You should have known better to run for any political office even more so the Presidency if you slate wasn't immaculate...if you had discarded a candy wrapper on the ground it would have been brought to light.... but this? Get out now before you embarass yourself anymore!

just curious hermie, care to tell us the ethnicity of these women? not that it matters other than your stand on issues like race: ops, sorry, you haven't stated one. how about gender equality? where these colleagues or forbid subordinates? oh, again sorry, you said they were staffers. well, no more questions except i hope you can, if elected, prevent china from their quest to develop nuclear capability

Why is it that Cain resorts to singing some religious hymm? Is that supposed to prove something? Or maybe "He saw beyond all my faults" is supposed to remind us of Gods forgiveness, even for sexual predators. This behavior has no place in a Presidential Campaign. What ever is between him and his God is his own business. As Cain is a right wing politician, I don't think we can expect much compassion from him but it surely seems we can expect theatrics and more lies.

Who cares! The litany of women that truthfully told the fact that Clinton was a pervert didn't prevent him from being elected. Why would the left be so interested now that the accusations are against Cain. Are they guilty of racism?

oh please, the left is not doing this, even Cain thinks its Perry's camp! And the right impeached Clinton (and I agreed at the time it was the right thing to do to a President who lied under oath, even about consentual tryst) . And how quickly you forget, the Democrat Party threw Anthony Weiner under the bus. This country would be spared time and taxpayer money from another impeachment by vetting Cain now, you would think the right would want to avoid such a waste!

Do you consider rape to be consentual?

Does the name "Juanita Broaddrick" ring any bells? That's the woman Sweet Willie forced himself on when he was the Attorney General of Arkansas.

And how many other women joined together in the lawsuit against him? They came forward to tell their stories, they didn't hide behind lawyers like with Herman Cain. Sounds to me like there was a world of difference.

The republicans went after Clinton with a vengeance in every possible way they could! True, Clinton ought to have just come clean but this country is so prudish. Everyone in Washington seems to have their flings on the side, the trick is not to get caught in America. Then all bets are off and you can bet that just about every accuser is guilty of their own secret liasons. Now the thing is, there is quite a difference between two consenting adults having a sexual affair and "sexual harrasment." This is not about "racism," nor consenting adults having sex. This is about "Harrasment!" And apparently multiple accusations.

if it true that he harassed these women & paid them off he should of just came clean with it don't he know no closest door stays closed for every someone will soon find a way to pick it locks....and for all those who say liberals have no morals rem that conservatives at times have also had dirty hands and locked door....

Most valid sexual harassment suites settle around $250,000.... 35K??? The insurance company decided pay it because its was cheaper than going to court and win.
11:55 AM on 11/03/2011
I find it interesting he finds it in himself to say sorry to muslims yet cant find the same moralities to do likewise to two or three women whom he clearly wronged a lot worse than any muslims.

How is it clear he wronged them? There's an accusation and denial. We have no evidence either way.
12:43 PM on 11/03/2011
we do have a settlement. Plus, we have the conservative pollster also accusing him.

There's evidence.

This is all a great diversion to try and make us think the campaign was being run sooo well. It does take some of the attention off the fact Cain cannot handle any situations whatsoever..

Cain, u done G, hang it up. Legally, it's unfair how he can say the allegations r untrue but, the victims r still bound by their legal agreement-if he can speak on it, they should be able to also.

I wonder if there are any Republicans who have the good sense to be profoundly embarrassed by their Presidential candidates? I'm a Democrat, or more likely a former one, and I have the good sense to be very embarrassed by Obama. He is a Corporatist owned by Wall Street who has followed in Bush II's footsteps, violating the US Constitution he thinks doesn't apply to him just like George Bush did. Are the Democrats seriously going to stick with him? Please, a little sanity!
