Kurt Koch, Vatican Rep To Jews, Causes Controversy On First U.S. Visit

Cardinal Kurt Koch Catholic Jewish Dialogue

11/ 1/11 06:13 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK — The cardinal in charge of Vatican relations with Jews landed in controversy during his first U.S. visit in his new position.

After a speech on theology and Jewish-Catholic dialogue at Seton Hall University, The Jewish Daily Forward reported that Swiss Cardinal Kurt Koch repeated a comment he made earlier this year in the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, that the cross should be viewed as the "definitive" Yom Kippur – the Jewish Day of Atonement.

Rabbi Alan Brill, a Seton Hall professor who helped organize Koch's talk Sunday in New Jersey, told The Associated Press that Koch was responding to an audience member who had asked about the article the cardinal had authored. Koch had written that, "Since the cross of Jesus erases any desire for vengeance and calls everyone to reconciliation, it rises above us as the permanent and universal Yom Kippur."

Chief Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni of Rome had complained that Koch seemed to be indicating that Jews should consider Christian beliefs definitive. Koch wrote in a clarification that he was addressing the Christian duty, because of the cross, to reconcile with other religions.

At Seton Hall, Koch repeated the explanation but did not elaborate, Brill said.

"We did feel a certain level of communication gap because in certain things, he did not move past what he has already said," Brill said.

Rabbi Eric Greenberg, director of interfaith affairs for the Anti-Defamation League, who attended the Seton Hall talk, called Koch's comments "not helpful."

"We really do have a lot of further dialogue to do," Greenberg said.

Through an aide, Koch declined to comment Tuesday to the AP.

In meetings with Koch that continued through Monday, Jewish leaders expressed concerns that the canonization process for Pope Pius XII was moving forward before all Vatican archives had been opened on the World War II-era pontiff, according to Rabbi Noam Marans, director of interreligious relations with the American Jewish Committee, who helped plan Koch's meetings.

Jews and others who oppose beatification for Pius say that the pontiff failed to speak out enough to stop the Holocaust. Koch said nothing significant would be revealed in an additional investigation of the archives and that whatever information is learned would be subject to interpretation and would therefore not settle the issue definitively, Marans said. Koch noted that even among Jewish leaders, there is disagreement over whether Pius should be canonized.

"It was a disconcerting moment that was part of a larger positive context," Marans said. "It was part of a larger positive conversation and needs to be understood as such."

Greenberg called Koch's comments on Pius, "tired old rationales for not doing what's right and opening the archives." However, the Council of Centers on Jewish-Christian Relations, an information and advocacy network, issued a statement saying there was no anger at the cardinal, only some "frustration" due to language differences. The organization noted that Koch acknowledged Christian "complicity" in the Holocaust and that Jews are "participants in God's salvation."

Koch was appointed about a year ago as president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, the office in charge of Vatican relations with other Christians and Jews. The former bishop of Basel, he was known for his experience dealing with Orthodox and Lutheran churches. On Wednesday, Koch was scheduled to travel to Washington for more meetings and a tour of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

I am sure that G-d is pleased to know that the catholic church wants to replace his Day of Atonement with a piece of junk.

There's a reason that Catholic boys call masturbation "beating the bishop."

One would think with SO MANY self professed geniuses of the Liberal Arts here, at least some of them would know that Christianity and Islam are in fact and unabashedly triumphalist religions. They believe they are literally the Last and most Perfect Word on the subject and anyone who does not believe is damned, damaged or less than whole. It's axiomatic - it's in the very words they use.

But, and I have to say I am shocked that since so many squawky liberals claim to have so much wisdom to spread around vis a vis Judaism they would know, or be ashamed to admit so openly they don't know, that in fact they don't know that Judaism does not view itself as a triumphalist faith. It has very little to say on the subject and isn't particularly worried about whether it is or is not or anything else is or is not the Last Word. It simply doesn't enter into the belief system the liturgy or the theory.

Maybe you need to stop talking so much and ensuring everyone knows how incredibly dull you are.

These interfaith venues are all very political; and one is required to be neutral on all spiritual matters, and tones.

I wonder what's REALLY in those Vatican archives. I have no doubt at all that there's more than enough evidence of "the church" trying to wipe out the Jews in every generation, while trying to erase their 'lord's' Jewish identity. I would also speculate that they have other reasons for trying to 'make nice'. I have many dear friends who are religious Catholics who are only too happy to see positive change toward Jews, and they feel their church has come a long way since Pius. I hope they're right.

Dear Christians, how often have I heard repeated that ALL scripture is good for reproof and learning? This is written by Paul as you call him but his real name would have been Rabbi Sha'ul or Saul. There was no compilation of New Testament scriptures written at that time, nor did any of these letters or gospels pass as scripture then to anyone. Why then do Christians not celebrate the wonderful, awesome Holy Days and Feasts Commanded in Lev 23? If scripture can't contadict scripture then why do you not observe Yom Kippur? Why do you not celebrate Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot? These are commanded to be observed FOREVER. Oh and please remember that NO ONE, NO CHURCH or OTHER ENTITY can replace the Hebrews as G-d's chosen people. If you think otherwise you mock G-d and call Him and His Word a liar.

The idea that faith above deeds absolves all sins is the belief of non-Catholic Evangelical Christians as well. In this way, these believers can commit any offense and be "saved' as long as they believe or merely confess to the offense, They do not have to make amends, compensate or apologize for their actions to those (other than God) they have hurt. What I don't understand is that the Christain Bible makes reference to the Recording Angel; one who records all your deeds to determine if you go to heaven. What happened to that concept? All I know is that heaven with this man, Jerry Falweill, Pat Robertson, Pope Pious, all the "prosperity gospel" preachers, would be hell to me.

Can we really expect better from the Vatican on this topic?

I mean, come on... look at their track record. The Catholic Church preached anti-semitism from the pulpit for about 1900 years before WW2. Hitler didn't invent anti-semitism. It was already prevalent in Europe at the time and he would never had been able to rise to power and scapegoat the Jews so easily had it not been for that prevalence.

Who knows? Maybe, without the Catholic Church having preached hatred of Jews for so long, based on the assertion that Jews are collectively responsible for deicide, Hitler would never have been able to make them the scapegoat for Germany's problems. The Holocaust may never have happened, millions of lives may not have been lost and the state of Israel may never have been created, meaning there would be no war in the middle east.

Yes, the Vatican should have a lot on its conscience!

As much as I love and support the state of Israel, I cannot help but agree with you. I would much rather have those 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust and its aftermath alive, along with their descendants, than I would Israel (if I had to choose between two such histories).

what is the matter with the catholics, evangelical christians ... leave the Jews alone, let others do as they wish. No Jews have a warm fuzzy feeling about the cross, Jesus is not the Lord...do what you want and let it go. Offensive and hateful for millennia. Once again, the Vatican not putting its best foot forward here.

I can recall in the 60s when Israel was referred to in closed circles as land of jew bums, when Jews were wearing star of david were beaten, and when individual jews around were called out load JB's, when dirty jew was openly used by store owners, when individual jews were told they were prayed for, when jewish kids would be attacked in the streets, when Israel's seen as impure occupier of holyland, remember guys?. Be honest, Has much disappeared since. if so is it because of Pope's ecumenical statements? if not, then when.
Any thoughts
