Because the NYPD really needed another viral video of police brutality, new footage today of New York's finest punching and indiscriminately pepper-spraying a group of Halloween revelers in Alphabet City on Avenue A at 6th Street Friday night.
The video, uploaded to MyBlockNYC, begins with a group of young people, some in costume, yelling at two cops getting back into their car. Although it's unclear what prompts the altercation, tensions seem high. "What are the charges?!" a girl screams. And a man yells at one of the cops, "You are a motherfucker...Way to go. Way to go."
It's then that the cops get back out, shove somebody, and start spraying.
We've reached out to the NYPD to ask about what happens next, but it appears someone the cops had detained escapes the squad car (the back door can be seen swinging open) and makes a run for it. "He's out!" the cameraman screams.
Three cops catch up with the runaway and give him a pretty good beating.
A witness tells Gothamist:
"We don't know what started it, something must have just happened before I arrived. And then everyone was running trying not to get maced. They jumped one guy, and you can see three cops on him at once. And about five minutes after this ended, the cops drove away. As far as I know they didn't arrest anybody. But the guy in the video was visibly beat up. And they definitely maced at least a dozen people. Very strange."
We'll keep you posted as we learn more details.
