Anonymous Hackers' Plan Of Attack On Zetas Drug Cartel In Doubt

Anonymous Drug Cartel

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/02/11 10:53 AM ET Updated: 11/02/11 05:47 PM ET

Supposed members of the hacker-activist collective 'Anonymous' recently threatened to go after Mexico's Zetas drug cartel, but reports now indicate that the fate of this so-called "Operation Cartel" may be in doubt.

As reported by the AP, the hacktivists' latest project was announced in a YouTube video alleging that an Anonymous member had been kidnapped by members of the cartel. According to PCMag, the unnamed individual was said to have been "kidnapped during a street-level protest named Operation Paperstorm in Veracruz, Mexico." The Register notes that the video was apparently uploaded to YouTube on October 6 but wasn't translated to English until late in October.

However, doubts have arisen over the claim's validity, and some worry about a possible backlash from the Zetas.

Following the wide distribution of the video's English-language version earlier this week, security company Stratfor assessed the risk of speaking out against the notoriously violent Zetas and the likelihood of retaliation.

Stratfor wrote the following in a blog post on November 1:

We have seen reports that Los Zetas are deploying their own teams of computer experts to track those individuals involved in the online anti-cartel campaign, which indicates that the criminal group is taking the campaign very seriously. Those individuals involved face the risk of abduction, injury and death — judging by how Los Zetas has dealt with threats in the past.

On November 2, the Guardian reported that "Operation Cartel" was in "disarray."

"Two hacker members of 'Operation Cartel', which said earlier this week that it would expose members of the murderous cartel, have now indicated that they are stopping their scheme to identify collaborators and members because they don't want anyone to be killed as a result," wrote the Guardian.

The Guardian also said that some tweeters had expressed concerned about a violent retaliation as a result of "OpCartel," while others were uncertain about the unnamed kidnapping victim mentioned in the YouTube video.

If the plan is indeed still under way, Anonymous will leak data belonging to suspected Zetas collaborators--including police, journalists and taxi drivers--on November 5.

Earlier in October, the Mexican army said they had captured a Zetas lieutenant who allegedly ordered an arson attack on a casino in the city of Monterrey in August. The incident left 52 dead. Days later, the army said they had freed 61 men held by the Zetas for forced labor.

Anonymous has grabbed headlines for a high-profile hack attack against HBGary, a distributed denial of service attack against MasterCard and many other incidents against individuals, companies and government organizations around the world. Affiliates of the loose-knit hacker collective have also taken credit for attacks on websites maintained by the FBI and the CIA.

It's a go.

'The Anon who had been kidnapped last month by the Zetas has been released, although it appears that the Zetas concerned did not know that the individual was the Anon whose release had been demanded by those who instigated #OpCartel. As such, no bargain has been fulfilled. Meanwhile, those who have been in possession of the e-mails have promised to provide them to me alone, which is to say that everything that proceeds from now on is my own work, and not that of Anonymous. Any reprisals against anyone other than myself, then, will have no effect.'

Click link for the rest. Anonymous isn't backing down despite alleged threats.

No surprise there. A hacker can found and then their whole family can't be found...

Who the hell buys Mexican? Buy the best. Buy American. The Pacific Northwest, and Washington state in particular is renowned for the best product in the world. Legalize it, and create jobs.

Apparently Anonymous has its limits? Who knew?
06:36 PM on 11/02/2011
There just realizing that threatening them is a bad idea. What they think was gonna happen there were gonna submit themselves and agree make everything okay. The kidnapping is out of there hands we may only pray that nothing tragic falls upon their friend.

Seems that Anonymous does forgive and forget.

Then Anonymous soon won't be.

Self-righteous hackers who've screwed everyday people versus violent narco gangsters who kill everyday people sounds like the plot of a cheesy action movie.

DDOS attacks on websites don't hurt the companies they go after but sure make life hard trying to do things like buy things online. The government response they provoke doesn't help either. They seem to be creating exactly the sort of controlled environment on the internet they claim to be fighting.

And yes it is a Civil War pic.

Come on now - like some Zeta Drug Cartel is going to find a computer hacker when the CIA / FBI / Police / Banks, etc. etc. can't? That's garbage - those stupid drug cartels can't even find the Mexican border, they are a bunch of bullies who couldn't live in the real world if they tried - hence why they are on the back roads of a 3rd world country killing poor Mexicans, bullies. They probably think a mouse is an animal.

They may not find Anonymous computer hackers, no. But, if you're the kind of person who paradoxically likes getting personal attention through "Anonymous," have a recognizable handle you've used in the pursuit of such, and you have a tendency to show up in public wearing a certain iconic mask when it isn't Halloween, yeah, you might consider keeping an eye over your shoulder. ;)

If you believe that your sadly mistaken. It's a billion dollar industry. If they are anything like the old Colombian cartels (and I'm sure they are because they worked with them for decades), they have accountants and hundreds of people from many different levels in society on their payrolls.

These aren't two bit street corner drug dealers or L.A. gang bangers.
Read a book on Pablo Escobar and see how sophisticated the cartels are.

Exactly, sir. They are businessmen. They use some pretty awful tactics (though most of the violence is directed at competitors and those who have wronged them--the latter is completely justifiable), but they are not morons. Stupid people do not have billion dollar enterprises with diversified interests. This is not some bad '80s crime movie.
