8,000 Refrigerated Shipping Containers May Be In Danger Of Exploding

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/02/11 06:02 PM ET Updated: 11/02/11 07:27 PM ET

Reefers are causing a worldwide panic, but not the kind most would expect.

Ports in western Washington state and Oakland, California are stepping up safety procedures after multiple reefers -- or refrigerated shipping cars -- exploded in Vietnam and Brazil, killing a total of three dockworkers, MSNBC reports. Faulty coolant likely caused the explosions; the bad coolant is in use in up to 8,000 container cars that have undergone maintenance in Vietnam since February.

Demand for those containers can often be a barometer of trade activity. A rebound in global trade earlier this year pushed shipping firms to rely increasingly on companies that lease the containers, Bloomberg reports. Steel cargo box demand may see an 11 percent boost this year.

Even with the estimated rise in demand for containers, some port workers in Oakland are refusing to work out of fear that more reefers will explode. Still, a representative from Maersk Line, the shipping company whose reefers blew up, says "necessary precautions [have been taken] to avoid further incidents," freight news outlet IFW reports.

However, Chris Peeler, a member of the Labor Relations Committee of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union in Seattle told MSNBC, that, so far, experts "cannot pinpoint the problem."

Though the reefers may be giving the shipping industry some trouble right now, since its advent in World War II, containerization has made the shipping process safer and more efficient. A 2001 report from the International Organization for Standardization, the governing body responsible for standardizing the containers, estimated that containerization has reduced the cost and time required to move goods globally by 35 and 84 percent, respectively.

The same report hailed containerization for its "enormous improvements in the safety and health of transportation workers" who'd previously played a much more hands-on and hazardous roles in the movement of goods. But, potential risks remain due to the high volume of goods that are often hidden inside the containers.

Last year Italy experienced the worst radiologic incident in its history when a container car arriving in the port city of Genoa was found to have startlingly high levels of radiation emitting from it, according to Wired. After spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, officials determined that the source of the radiation was a "pencil-like cylinder" of radioactive cobalt-60, which was once part of a machine used to sterilize food and eventually made its way to a Saudi Arabian scrap metal yard, and then was inexplicably included in a shipment of more than 22-tons of copper wire.

The incident highlighted concerns over the potential use of reefers by terrorists, Wired reports, and currently the Department of Homeland Security says that 99 percent of incoming cargo is scanned for radiation.

Still, some shipping risks may simply come with the territory. Earlier this month at least 6 tankers carrying the flammable chemical ethanol exploded when a freight train derailed in Tiskilwa, Illinois. Likewise a cargo ship named Rena remains stranded after running aground on a reef in New Zealand on October 5th, leaking about 385 tons of oil into ocean to date.

This is garbage ! The refrigerant used in "reefers" is not flammable. However, some refrigeration units do run on propane( LPG) which is flammable. That then is a maintenance problem. The "problem' is not widespread and, as a practricing international freight forwarder can confirm that we in the industry do not consider "exploding refrigerated containers" as a problem. It's rare ! This is bogus !

What do you think might be causing these explosions. I worry for those that are being hurt or killed. If it's not widespread and it's rare, do you think that it's just a maintenance issue or are they cutting corners but increasing risk? Please tell us what you think is bogus. Workers are not wanting to go near some of the containers. I'm a little confused on that and would really like to know. If you're in the industry, I appreciate your sharing what you think might be the problem. Thank you.

I would say that the LP tanks (the reefer's refrigeration unit fuel) are probably leaking. LP is an odd duck because it is heavier than air. You can pour some into an open bowl in a room with stable air and it will remain in that bowl for a very long time just waiting for an ignition source. It also has a wide fuel to air ratio ignition window so it ignites easily.

It's a maintenance issue and specifically associated with those boxes that came from Vietnam. We've used this equipment for decades and it is stable and safe. If they were trying to cut corners by diluting or changing the refrigerant used in re charging the refrigeration , it could cause problems but, it's the quality of the shoddy work in Vietnam and not the units worldwide. If Maersk just stopped trying to save a few bucks by contracting for maintenance in the "cheapest" markets, the problem wouldn't exist. This is the first I've heard of this kind of problem in over 40 years in the shipping business....

Also, We don't know if this is just an issue brought up by the Longshore union for leverage on other issues........

As an former employee of Maersk asigned to maintain reefers I am in total agreement with your observation concerning the shoddy maintenance. It's too bad those responcible for this goof up probably will never pay the price.

Need to add this note - by purchasing the alarm clock at a non-profit thrift store (Salvation Army), my purchase helped the needy of our own country. Plus, I can buy FOUR $2 clocks at the thrift store for the price of ONE new one.

Back in the early days of shipping, manure would explode in the bottom of the hull from gasses. Thus they would post “ Ship High In Transit” Or S.H.I.T. True story you can google it. Now it's reefers

So DHS scans 99% of the containers for radioactivity - but this isn't a radioactive substance. And I question the 99% in the first place.

How so? There is nothing here to suggest that. Nobody is trying to hide what happened nor is anybody failing to correct the problem. Your post shows only your own bias and bigotry and nothing more, except a total lack of intellectual honesty

there are thousands of these cans that are being dumped here by china. china wont take them back because it doesnt pay to, so they just leave them here for the american tax payer to deal with. so heres an idea. instead of building a fence between the u.s border and mexico stack these three high across the border.

There's a growing trend in making homes of containers (not reefer units). They're already insulated and the construction is sturdy. They can actually make very attractive homes!

solve two problems, just make sure the doors open on the southern side

If we here in the United States would act like a World Power we would not have to be spending Billions of dollars trying to protect the American People? Our governement is allowing terriorist into our Country and then we get worried that we have to try and find them as they want to distroy our very way of life? What do you expect from a Group of Crooks in Washington that only worry about overseas and that forgetting the people here in America? We just get the tax burden they created the many problems we have today. If we don't dump them soon we will not be living in povertery for many generations to come. It is very clear that our politicians don't want America to keep its Status in the World just takeing care of the rich, oil, and countries that hate us!!

As I have always said: GREED AND STUPIDITY WALK HAND IN HAND.
Lets take a guess.
Several Vietnamese companies were offering rock bottom prices to service Reefer units. Like moths drawn to a flame the shipping companies could not believe their luck in getting such a windfall PROFIT. Now the same companies have to waste more money tracing these Reefer units to find out if they are going to have to Re-Service these units so that they are safe.
Sounds like another situation of: You get what you pay for. When will big business learn getting things done in Asia costs more in the long run.

Actually, I believe he's closer to the truth than not. Corporations' absolute bottom line is PROFIT. It doesn't mean diddly to them how they get it, just as long as they get it.

No - the companies will leave it up to the US "gubmint" to trace these units. You don't really think they would cut into their profits, do you?

If everyone made an honest effort to buy american when they go shopping, then maybe there wouldn't be so many vietcong exploding containers filled with chinese lead paint coverered toys your buying for your kids.

There is NO WAY to make containers 100 percent safe because there are so many countries and products involved. That fact that there are so few incidents like this is really amazing.

The are risks associated with storing and transporting everything.

Radioactive cobalt-60, which was once part of a machine used to sterilize food. This is a bold face lie.
Google Cobalt-59 and 60. Man made, outdated. Here is something God told us not to use.

How do you think God told us not to use radioisotope, where is that said? Is that in the bible? Is that something God told you? Is that for all radioisotopes? Should we not have them used in medicine? Should we not have the use of them on our food? Should we stop X-raying airplanes, pipelines, nuclear reactors, Fossil fuel plants? Please do not make broad [painted statements out of your fear of modern science.
BTW this is not the only time an isotope camera has been sent to a scrap yard and recycled in the wrong way. A cobolt-60 camera was sent to a scrap yard in Mexico years ago. The pellets being magnetic were attached to a pickup truck, taken into a local neighborhood, parked for several days and many died or were injured. There was also an incident where Cobalt 60 was mixed into steel and turned into the legs for dining tables and were sent to restaurants all over the USA. It has nothing to do with God, more the humans that do not do their jobs!
08:40 AM on 11/03/2011
and where exactly in the bible does it say that god tells us not to use colbalt 60? it wasn't even around when this deity you speak of inspired a few far from perfect men to interpret his message. and further more the two stories you reference have nothing to do with each other. so why mention it?
