For years, a slice of Civil War history sat tucked away in a box in Robert Plumb's closet. Today, the contents of that box are shaping his future.

In 1994, Mr. Plumb inherited a series of 42 letters written by a young Union solider named George P. McClelland. A history major in college, Mr. Plumb presumed the letters were of historical importance, but his schedule left little time for research. For most of his 30-year career, Mr. Plumb, now 69, worked as a marketing executive at General Electric and, later, Fannie Mae.
