iPhone Battery Life Flaw Confirmed By Apple; iOS 5 Update To Solve It

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/02/11 06:58 PM ET Updated: 01/11/12 10:04 AM ET

If you purchased an iPhone 4S or upgraded your iDevice device to Apple's recently released iOS 5 software, you might have noticed that your battery life doesn't last as long as it should. You're not alone. Others have flocked to the Apple forums to complain about the issue, and numerous bloggers have taken issue with the comparatively short battery life in some iOS 5 devices.

Thankfully, Apple was listening.

The Loop's Jim Dalrymple reported on Wednesday that an Apple rep had acknowledged the battery problem and had even hinted at a fix on the horizon.

Per Dalrymple's post:

“A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices,” an Apple spokesperson told The Loop. “We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.”

Apple sent the same statement to AllThingD but didn't share an exact date when the iOS 5 update would be available for users to download.

MacRumors, however, notes that Apple also released a beta version of its mobile software to developers. Titled "iOS 5.0.1", the software will be available for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, first- and second-generation iPads, and third- and fourth-generation iPod Touches. According to MacRumors, the update will fix some of users' biggest problems with devices running iOS 5, including battery life, security issues, voice recognition problems for Australian users and more.

Until Apple's fix arrives, we've got a list of helpful tips and tricks for upping your iPhone's battery life. Check them out via the slideshow (below). You can also check out users biggest complaints about the iPhone 4S so far (here).

Turn Off "Setting Time Zone"

Could the battery drain on the iPhone 4S be caused by a bug in Apple's iOS 5 operating system? It sure is a popular theory, though Apple hasn't responded yet.

Basically, this supposed bug is causing the iPhone to repeatedly use your phone's location services in order to find out whether or not you've switched time zones, even if you're just sitting on the couch (which, let's face it, you're usually doing). When I checked my Time Zone settings, my iPhone was indeed currently using my location to ensure that I had not switched time zones in the past 24 hours. Not good, and certainly a potential battery killer, depending on how often this is happening.

To fix this:
1. Touch the "Settings" icon on your home screen (the one with all the gears).
2. Touch the "Location Services" bar.
3. Scroll down to the "System Services" bar at the bottom and click onto that screen.
4. Switch "Setting Time Zone" into the "Off" position. Unless you're doing some cross-country traveling, it's not necessary to be on all the time, especially if a bug is causing it to access your GPS several times throughout the day.

While you're there, you can go ahead and turn off "Location-Based iAds," unless you like those specific, hyper-local advertisements that pop up when using your favorite free apps. You can also certainly do without "Diagnostics & Usage," and unless you drive often AND use the traffic function on your Maps app, you can turn off "Traffic" as well.

Perhaps Apple released iOS a bit prematurely.

Access your home PC from your Apple iOS device by using the 2X client App from
http://www.2x.com
also has client for Android. Voted 20th overall best Android App!

Wow you've had every android phone man that is impressive, but if you love you iPhone so much why would have had every android phone? I guess you like being restricted by your phone manufacturer and getting ripped a new one everytime you buy the "NEW" and "IMPROVED" iPhone!

stop trolling and go play your angry birds now. (its better on your new iPhone!)

Are you kidding? I'm not an Apple fanbogy but phones such as the HTC Evo and other Android smart phones have pathetic battery lives that are a fraction of the iPhone's.

I have the HTC thunderbolt atm. Custom ROM running on it and after a day of normal usage i still have near 50%. I have the option to swap batteries on the fly or have an extended battery.

Not possible with the 4S, and for some droids your comment may be true but certainly not all but at least on the android side we have options and ffs at least we can swap batteries if all else fails!

If you own another brand phone and you are so super satisfied with it why would you post negative comments under any Apple article that runs. Your HTC or Samsung is awesome! Don't be so jealous of iPhone owners.
12:22 PM on 11/07/2011
yeah it always pleases me when they say they are so satisfied but can't wait to talk crap on an iPhone..... Apple users don't need to waste our time cuz our phones are actually great.
04:50 PM on 11/07/2011
It goes both ways. Plenty of Apple fans crap on Android on their articles. This isn't a jealousy thing. Unless you're saying Apple fans are jealous of Adroid.

Heh, it is pretty funny... might have something to do with the fact that I have never heard an American imitate an Aussie accent successfully in my entire life.

Why would anyone use a powerful juice suking phone without the ability to swap out a battery? With half the RAM of the competition, lower resolution front camera, No flash, no DLNA, no Mass Storage Drag and drop, much Smaller screen, but bulkier device. No USB slot or SD card capability, Weak notification screens, Censored apps that can only be obtained from one place. I had one of these phones and gave it up after two weeks. I think Apple started something rgeat with the iPhone but like the early MAC they will lose in the end because of their need to control everything.

iPeople never learn. Which is why Samsung is eating Apple's lunch and Android has already passed OS4 and 5...

With the SGS II I don;t have to ration use nor carry a bulky sled. Just a little battery that fits easily in the wallet I rarely need.

I have no idea. They are beginning no to copy Android OS.....ironic. We had an iphone GS for about two weeks sold them for $1400 on Ebay and bought International versions of the Samsung Galaxy, $10 unlimited "dumb phone" data is a great benefit,

Another example of "if you want the freekin battery to last, shut the phone off" attitude. We bought the iphone for ALL the bells and whistles it provides. I love when Apple employees tell me what to turn off and what NOT to use. If the technology is not there to provide a robust amount of energy needed, then dont include the option on the phone and dont hype the features.

Strange that the Magic Mouse also has an extraordinarily short battery life.

Is there a fix for that yet...?

You sound very confident about something that has only been "hinted" at being released.
