Oprah Winfrey Network Still Losing Money

The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) is still losing money, according to the New York Post.

While parent company Discovery Communications poured $15 million into the young network and even created cross-channel simulcasts to promote OWN's new programs, the network still struggled to produce profits. So far, OWN has installed Oprah as CEO and retooled its programming repeatedly. Nothing seems to have made a substantial difference yet.

Discovery Communications head David Zaslav said he was still optimistic about OWN's growth possibilities. The parent company also posted third quarter gains in total distribution revenue and boasted a strong stock performance after announcing a deal with Netflix.

She should have selected Dr. Phyllis, online finalist to present her teacher reality show. Education should be a top priority in this world. What is REALLY going on in schools? Ya Think?

Such a shame her show was great never missed one but her new network is just to much teaching. The thing that made her show great was all the different topics and guests which her network lacks!!!
Please someone tell her to mix it up!

This OWN network stinks! Never watch. Give us back Discovery Health....!

Her network is flopping because she kept promising all this great stuff and ended up mixing re-hash with DHC leftovers. I loved Oprah as a talk-show phenomenon because she went through a lot of different topics. Her network doesn't reflect that and is often full of filler or reruns. I expected a lot from her when she kept blabbing about this network before Jan. 1st and waited like a fool for to all begin that very NYE into New Year's. It's going to continue to flop unless she brings the REAL O-game and step it up. What happened to Master Class? Exactly.

She's forgetting her demographic and excluding the outer ones as well.

Oh me Oh my why would her 'NETWORK" be "STRUGGLING"?
Maybe because there is nothing even faintly interesting showing on it????
Old Dr. Phil shows and that idiot Rosie O'Donnell.

O has such an inflated ego that she couldn't just go away like we all looked forward to. She had to cancel a network that we all loved, and even call it her OWN! I don't anyone who watches that network. Big waste Discovery.

I don't watch because the shows I used to love on that channel have disappeared! I never was an Oprah fan, and if the network is totally her point of view presented by various friends, what is there for me? Oprah has enough money, give us back our Discovery!!!

Oprah has constructed her network's programming to appeal to her core audience but that audience isn't big enough to support an entire network so she needs to find more viewers but if she is unwilling to adjust her programming to appeal to a greater audience, then she'll fail.

Agreed - news, sports, reality shows and stupid sitcoms make $$$ not meaningful, uplifting programming. You'd think Oprah would've known that...

Thanks for that info. Alot of people think Oprah came in an "cancelled" their favorite Discovery shows. She did not; those shows were moved to other Discovery branded chanels. And let's not lose perspective: Discovery has always had something of a niche following to begin with, so it's not like Oprah came in and ruined the #1 cable network. She is taking a risk, let's see how it plays out. I hope she does't decide to fill the airways with more reality TV and sitcoms. But as Oprah is learning: building a network isn't easy.

Oprah should have stayed with NBC.

You mean ABC?

Her show ran successfully on NBC for many years. She took a big gamble with creating her own network, which apparently is not showing profits for investors who helped her.She should have stayed with NBC.

All Oprah all the time, drumming in her "message." is a bit too much. We get it, Oprah. Even if all the programs on OWN don't include Oprah (and, come on, doesn't The Oprah Winfrey Network give you a clue), it's still all Oprah preaching to us.

Well, you must be aware that Saint Oprah knows exactly how we all should be conducting our lives and cannot stop herself from telling us.

I love the network. Yes, there is always room for improvement, it will get there. I think the reason most people criticize is because they are frustrated by the fact of how successful Oprah has already been and feel enough is enough. It doesn't even seem to really be about the programming or any thing really about the network. Oprah has already done an unimaginable amount of good. If more people were like her the world would be in better shape. Just listen to her and you'll learn.
