'South Park' Mocks Occupy Wall Street, Michael Moore & The Media (VIDEO)

South Park Occupy Wall Street

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/03/11 09:27 AM ET Updated: 11/03/11 11:54 AM ET

The beauty of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's ability to make a new episode of "South Park" from scratch in just six days is how topical they get to be. Even though the show is about a bunch of 4th graders, their world quickly becomes a perfect microcosm for whatever current event or scandal is rocking the news that particular week. This week, of course, it's all about Occupy Wall Street.

After the kids of South Park Elementary complete the Presidential fitness test, they're angered to hear that everyone did poorly because 1% of students (Eric Cartman, specifically) failed miserably and brought the average score down. The rest of the kids -- the 99%, if you will -- decide the system is flawed and that Cartman must pay.

You can see where this is going.

In the first clip below, Butters and Jimmy start their own Occupy movement, "Occupy Red Robin," after the Presidential fitness test organizers refuse to change their grading system. Michael Moore makes an appearance (and is surprisingly the only OWS celebrity "South Park" parodies in the episode) but brings about an extra 100 pounds with him.

The second clip below highlights two other funny themes from the episode: the media's misguided coverage of the Occupy movement and Cartman's belief that black people can no longer do any wrong in this country. His argument? If they could, people would obviously be blaming President Obama for their failure and not the 1%. Oh, Cartman.

The headline is very misleading, and appears to be aimed at getting a reaction. Yes, there were jokes at the expense of the 99% (South Park satirizes everything) but their harshest mockery was reserved for the 1%. Thus we have Eric Cartman -- who represents the 1% -- sobbing and feeling sorry for himself, rather than accept responsibility for the hardship he's caused those around him. He even blames Obama,  Read More...

It was a good skit written on a contemporary issue. We all benefit from comedy. Kudo's.

The OWS movement is funny, too. Dysfunctional, but I give them credit for being involved and attempting to do something they deem positive. Power to the people.

From the what I saw of this flawed episode, Trey and Matt should have spent more time learning about the OWS movement before spoofing it. The spoof just promotes the lies and misinformation promulgated by the main stream media and added nothing new and nothing revelatory or funny.

At least when they spoof Mormonism or Scientology, they have years of information to cull through. I doubt they or any of their writers ever went to an occupy protest, talked to one occupier or did any research other than watching Fox, CNN, and CBS news reports about the protests.

Not funny guys. Writing from a place of ignorance leads to propaganda and poor comedy.

Tex did you even watch the episode?
It was about just 2 people occupying a hamburger joint, while it was surrounded by policemen and press, outnumbering the occupyers. It clearly mocked the hysteria surrounding OWS more.
I'll say it in your style, at least when you give comment, make it less obvious that you didn't watch it. Not funny man. Writing from a place of ignorance leads to intolerance to criticism (from either South Park or the press) and self-centeredness (damn Hipsters!)

I'm with Tex on this one. It's like they just Wikipediaed OWS and went from there.

This episode sucked!

The Cartman part was senseless with no point and the OWS part was just a repeat of previous episodes that mocked protests and the media's absurd overreaction to them. This is just a cut and paste job from previous episodes.

If you are a longtime or regular SouthPark viewer then your've seen this all before.

not unusual for these guys. parker and stone are soooo hit or miss with their comedy.
06:18 PM on 11/08/2011
I like your response. I am creating an animated cartoon series, but I test my stuff on You Tube first and learned quick that most comedy is hit or miss. I did one about Harold Camping--you know, the "false" prophet of doom--and his recent errors. Anyway, the big joke was at the end. Everyone wanted to know where he was getting his prophecies from, so I show Prince from Purple Rain singing "1999". Prince was the false prophet. Anyway, no laughs.

I just want to ask, but did anyone else notice that the scene where the stuff animal got its head cut off through the tripwire by Cartman was a lot like the scene from Dexter, JUST FOUR DAYS PREVIOUSLY? Was that a reference to Dexter, or is that just a crazy coincidence - two people getting their heads chopped off in a tripwire four days apart from one another on TV?
02:27 AM on 11/05/2011
I know the South Park guys hate Michael Moore because in his movie "Bowling for Columbine" he interview Trey Parker and Matt Stone... and then right after ran a cartoon that was NOT done by the South Park creators, but Moore stole the animation style and created the illusion it was done by them... totally lame.
03:28 AM on 11/05/2011
I never presumed it was done by them. If it was the same style I didn't notice (not because it wasn't obvious but I just never focused on it). I would think it would make them proud if others like him used their style (basic) in their stuff.
06:17 AM on 11/05/2011
Not when it's done to make them look like they support ideas they don't.
07:20 AM on 11/05/2011
I think he only interviewed Stone, I don't think Parker was there.

The episode involving Hilary's snook didn't seem to get this much attention.

By the way, is it but for you faithful viewers do you think the "Terence and Philip" characters are reminiscent of Joe Biden and Harry Reid in private?

While your comment is a direct insult to me, I still find your word "sophmoronic" highly creative and plan on using it in the future.

Thanks.

It was so brilliantly written. I thought they got it right. In the end the 1% realize that they are going to have to divorce the tea party, take responsibility and grow up. The 99% can't always pay for what is caused by the 1%.

South Park is very funny, but this has not been their best season. They're too busy with The Book of Mormon, I think.

By the way, when a certain guy becomes the Republican candidate for president, that's one broadway show that's going to become very well known coast to coast.

One of the South Park writers is a Mormon... these guys grew up with Mormons... it's not like they are anti-mormon... they just thought Mormons were the perfect 'character' for a musical.
06:36 AM on 11/05/2011
Stone identifies himself as an aetheist, and Parker says he believes in "God" but so far I cannot find anything about him being Mormon supposedly, or either of them growing up around them. Where did you get this?

South Park isn't even funny. The creators are sheltered, well off suburban kids, and whatever political points they try to make just work to further exemplify it.

I take it that you probably disagree with their political ideology, but find Keith Olbermann a genius.

parker and stone are typical libertaritards, living in a narcissist fantasy world.

Wow. Sensitive, are we? South Park is overrated. Anyone with a brain can see right through this show. It's not even clever.

And they work their tails off weekly to bring entertainment to those who do find it funny. If they can bring a smile to just one person's face they are making the world a better place. Get off your pedestal.
04:58 AM on 11/05/2011
lol. South Park creators = the working class! now, that concept would actually make a hilarious South Park episode. That would be comedic escapism as its best.

I've read what passes for humor in your one party world,I prefer a world OCCUPIED with all kinds of nuts. That is the beauty of South Park it depicts a time during childhood where kids just hang out despite differences simply because they grew up together, prior to the indoctrination.

11When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1Coritians 13:11

....and i'm not even Christian.  I do know i loved "Mad Magazine" which has no editorial pov until i hit puberty.  Then i cam to realize a grown-up must take a stand.  Like the old labor song, "Which Side are You on?"  Or not.  You can pretend to be a child all your life too.  We seem to be swimming in American adults whose highest goal is to remain childish one's who life.  You assignment, if you choose to accept it, is to meditate on the difference between childlike and childish.
