Afghanistan War: U.S. Military Role May Soon Shift From Combat To Training

Us Troops In Afghanistan

ROBERT BURNS   11/ 2/11 10:57 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is considering an early shift in the U.S. military role in Afghanistan from primarily combat to mainly advisory and training duties, even as it struggles to create the beginnings of a political settlement of the war, a senior U.S. official said late Wednesday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because no decisions had been made on speeding up a change in the military's mission, said that details of the possible new U.S. approach had not been settled and that other options may be under consideration.

If the faster transition from combat to primarily advising Afghan forces is adopted it would mean a reduction in American combat duties sooner than the administration had planned. But it would not mean an early end to the war, which began in October 2001 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and became stalemated in the years before President Barack Obama took office.

The war has grown increasingly unpopular at home, and Obama is gearing up for a re-election campaign in which he is expected to emphasis his ending of the Iraq war this year and his efforts to wind down combat in Afghanistan by 2014.

In December 2009 Obama announced he was sending an additional 33,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan in a bid to change the course of the war. The U.S. and its NATO partners agreed in Lisbon one year ago that coalition forces would complete their combat mission by Dec. 31, 2014, with the understanding that advising and training Afghan forces would gradually become a more dominant part of the mission, particularly after the U.S. completes the withdrawal of 33,000 "surge" troops by September 2012.

The U.S. now has about 98,000 troops in Afghanistan and is scheduled to pull out 10,000 by the end of the year. That is part of a broader strategy designed to give the Afghans a bigger role in providing for their own security, with a goal of having the Afghans entirely in the lead – not just in security but also in other areas of governance – by the end of 2014.

The Wall Street Journal, which was first to report that a mission change was under White House consideration, said agreement on a shift to a U.S. military advisory role could come as early as next May, when Obama and other leaders of the 28-nation North Atlantic Treaty Organization are scheduled to meet in Chicago.

Back during WWll we got all the best minds together and limitless money to end the war with a violent end. Why don't we do the same today, except get the minds from the best Chemists, Botanist, Professors, Pharmacology, Scientists and any others needed? Build a love drug, and Dose the worlds water system or just violent war torn areas? Why not try? A couple billion, in hope of ending the total cost of the war. http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/RL33110.pdf

They can CALL it anything they want, but those bases are staying put and so are most of the soldiers, at least for the time-being. They'll just eventually do what they did with Iraq...

It's going to be hard enough on the ones coming home from iraq and no jobs waiting for them, add most of the ones in afghansatn in with that and thats a recipe for major disaster. If we pull out it will have to be slowly. There's so many ways they could eliminate the national deficit but they refuse to act on any of the easy solutions, vut all government waste, that includes the mega billions thrown away every year trying to keep marijuana from thje people.Legalize it for adult use nation wide.#4 years opr sooner,no more national deficit at all plus all states will be in the black again within 2-3 years with plenty of money left over for s.s./SSI/military disability and of course medicare-aide plus a host of many other programs and other projects.Jobs created small buisnesses being started up of all kinds, the list go's on and on

The banks will never let the government legalize any drug, because the banks rely on laundering billions in the narcotics trade. Without that drug money, they'd be bankrupt within days.

The first Unprovoked War in Afghanistan was entered because the Taliban asked for Evidence and a Fair trial. It took us 10 years, before We American understand there was never an intention to provide Evidence or a Fair Trial 10 years ago or now. Nothing to do with Harboring Bin Laden the CIA harbored there first or you are either for us or you are against us. In the aftermath, there will be no benefit for America, no benefit for Afghanistan and no benefit of the precedence we set for the globe. Afghanistan is a lost cause from the start to finish, with much carnage, treasury and bad politics. But get our man when we say Wanted Dead or Alive no matter who we kill in the process

The second Unprovoked War in Iraq was entered because WMD and 911 involvement, that did not exist. So America stayed 8 years and still counting. Iraq was a lost cause from Start to Finish with much carnage, treasury, and execution of Saddam with a MOCK TRIAL and opened Iraq Oil and Assets to the world market business.
NO PROBLEM we simply redefine the words Objective and Victory and NO ONE has to make amends or ever be able to gauge our OWN INSANITY.

Then there is for always Al Qaida., a boogie man and his handful of terrorist. Torture all his men, but execute and throw the Body in the SEA. He either did not exist or new nothing?

We were in contact with the Taliban directly and via Pakistan and they refused to hand him over.
Iraq's another story, but the invasion of Afghanistan was justified.

I'm a progressive and liberal minded but to say the war was unprovoked is not accurate in the least.

U.S. officials met in public and secret at least 20 times with Taliban representatives to discuss ways the regime could bring suspected terrorist Osama bin Laden to justice.
Throughout the years, however, State Department officials refused to soften their demand that bin Laden face trial in the U.S. justice system.

3) New offer on Bin Laden

For the first time, the Taliban offered to hand over Bin Laden for trial in a country other than the US without asking to see evidence first in return for a halt to the bombing, a source close to Pakistan's military leadership said.

But US officials appear to have dismissed the proposal and are instead hoping to engineer a split within the Taliban leadership.

Asked whether the Taliban would hand over bin Laden, Zaeef said, "No." But his translator said, "No, not without evidence."

"Even as it struggles to create the beginnings of a political settlement of the war..." You mean like the political settlement Kissinger "successfully" brokered with the North Vietnamese and the NLF?

that's a great leading photo.
it looks like the soldier is pondering for a second, before he turns around and unleashes hell on that helicopter. it would be shown in slow motion, of course. he slowly moves his head up, opens his eyes to look up, gets that intense, eye-of-the-tiger, i-know-i'm-going-to-die-but-i'll-save-my-team look, and then starts unloading.

We have been "training" the Afghanistan forces for years....are they slow learners? How long does it take to train a U.S. serviceman? Two questions come to mind....what about the approx. 100,000 private military contractors and what will their role be? They never seem to be included when columnists talk about troop numbers. And, does Afghanistan have the money to pay for their solders/police when they have a GDP of under $30 Billion (this number has been enhanced due to foreign money brought into their country because of war, etc)

So as we get closer to US elections, we tone down teaching Arabs to die and focus more on teaching them to kill? Is that how it works?
09:24 AM on 11/03/2011
Well, we've already been spending billions of dollars on teaching them how to read, how to speak English, how to vote, how to pave roads, how to build hospitals, how to build schools...

Are you one of those people who just isn't happy about anything?
