The heavily injured victim of an alleged anti-gay assault in Texas is speaking out for the first time.

"I was hurt really badly emotionally and physically, but I didn't lose my life and that's the most important thing," Burke Burnett said. "I'm taking it one day at a time."

Burnett, 26, reportedly received 30 stitches to close stab wounds on his back and forearms inflicted by a broken beer bottle, reports the Dallas Voice, as well as second-degree burns and severe bruises after being assaulted at a Halloween party on Sunday. At present, three men -- Daniel Martin, James James "Tray" Mitchell Laster III and Mickey Joe Smith -- are facing charges of
aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault causing bodily injury in connection with the attack.

But Burnett, who says he was inspired to come out at age 15 after Matthew Shepard's death, is primarily focused on the recovery process. "It's not my job to decide what justice for these guys is," he said.
