Muslim Pilgrims Gather For Hajj In Saudi Arabia (PHOTOS)

Hajj 2011 Begins

By SINAN SALAHEDDIN   11/ 3/11 12:58 PM ET  AP

MECCA, Saudi Arabia -- Muslims from across the world descended on this holy city ahead of the annual hajj pilgrimage, many of them with prayers for a peaceful resolution to the wave of uprisings roiling the Arab world.

Some 2.5 million people are expected to take part in the five-day event that starts Saturday, Saudi authorities said. The pilgrimage focuses on Mecca, Islam's holiest site and the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad.

This year's hajj takes place amid an unprecedented wave of anti-government protests in the Arab world that has toppled autocrats in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Uprisings have also shaken regimes in Yemen, Bahrain and Syria.

While hajj is a time to seek forgiveness for one's sins and meditate on the faith, the unrest across the region remained at the forefront of the minds of many pilgrims.

Adil Mohammed al-Saidi, who was making the pilgrimage from neighboring Yemen, said he hopes for a swift resolution to his country's 8-month uprising against President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who has ruled the impoverished nation for more than 30 years.

"The situation in Yemen is tragic and I pray to God to end this crisis very soon," said al-Saidi, 36, who has taken part in anti-government protests. "I hope that President Ali Abdullah Saleh, his forces and supporters put an end to this situation."

One of the bloodiest government crackdowns against protesters has been in Syria, where the U.N. says some 3,000 people have been killed since the revolt began in mid-March.

Khalaf Jumaa al-Hamidi, a 50-year-old father of five from Aleppo, Syria, said he has asked for peace in his homeland. "We pray to God that security be revealed in our country and other Islamic countries," he said.

While the uprisings in Yemen and Syria are still going strong, the civil war in Libya ended late last month with the capture and death of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Youssef Issa Askar, 65, from Nalut, Libya, hailed the end of the Gadhafi regime and urged patience as the country's new rulers try to create a state out of the rubble of Gadhafi's rule.

"We lived 40 years of oppression, slavery and injustice," he said outside Mecca's Grand Mosque, with his identification card bearing the red, green and black flag of the revolution. "I'd like to address the Libyan people who were patient all these 40 years and tell them to be patient one or two more years so that the security be maintained and the situation be better."

Hajj is the oldest and most sacred ritual of Islam that every able-bodied Muslim who can financially afford the trip must perform once in a lifetime. The pious journey brings together the many nations that make up the 1.3 billion Muslims worldwide.

The pilgrimage is packed with symbolism and ritual aimed at cleansing the soul of sin and winning absolution by tracing the footsteps of the Prophet Mohammed and Abraham, whom Muslims view as a forefather of Islam.

It culminates when the pilgrims gather on Mount Arafat where the Prophet Mohammed is said to have given his last sermon 14 centuries ago. During the ritual Muslims believe God will grant whatever prayers they make.

Pilgrims then cast pebbles at three pillars that represent Satan in a symbolic rejection of temptation, a day that also marks the start of the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, or feast of sacrifice, when Muslims around the world slaughter sheep and cattle in remembrance of Abraham's near-sacrifice of his son.

For those who think Muslims worship a black cube, please read a book.
Or at least this blog piece, which was a response to some of the racist comments posted here (comparing human beings to insects an animals? wow).

The Quran is what guides us and directs us. In the Quran, Allah the Most High says: "Therefore, worship the Lord of this House." "House" refers to the Kaabah. "Rabbun" is translated "Lord" in English, but we know in Arabic the word is rich with meaning and it means certainly, "Lord — the one who governs us." But it brings to mind the idea of nourishing or supplying a thing, an object or creature with its needs until it reaches; the point of its maturity where it can manage in its own creative role.

So we believe that Allah is the Rabbun for all creation — heavens, earth, sun, moon, stars and creatures. So if Allah says worship the Lord of this House, then we know that it means the One Who Created is to be worshipped. Allah is its Creator, and Allah is the One who provides for all after creating all. Worship not the House, but worship only the - Creator and Lord of all.

We shouldn't boast in the house, but boast in the Lord; in other words, don't glorify the House, but glorify God.

The Black Stone is in the corner of the House, it's a part of the House. We're not to worship the House: we're not to worship any part of the House.

I was born in a very orthodox Muslim family.

I have, however, come to realize what an incredible waste of time and resources this annual ritual has become. What a waste of money mostly spent in a country whose government deserves the least. If this pilgrimage and the more important five-times-a-day prayer had the effect they ought to have had, the world of Islam should by now be a Paradise of democracy and freedom but it is not.

One solution would be for the daily prayers to become every moment prayers of keeping God in mind in whatever we say and do. If time and circumstance allow for one to perform the standard prayers then it should be in the direction of Jerusalem as it was originally and also because it was from Jerusalem that Muhammad had his vision of seeing the Paradise and all that it encompasses.

Pilgrimages should also be made to Jerusalem thus heralding the oneness of the Abrahamic faiths and oneness of humanity.

Nobody is saying you can't do what you want........however most Muslims will stick to the Quran and Sunnah. Jerusalem is not an open city for most Muslims and the Israelis would never allow a Hajj to Jerusalem. Mecca was chosen because it was the original place where Adam and later Ibrahim worshipped God.

You may have born from a Muslims family, but you sure was educated in Islam. Perhaps is why you are not aware of Qur'an 2:177.

"It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces to the East and the West; but righteous is he who

believeth in Allah and the Last Day and the angels and the Scripture and the prophets; and

giveth wealth, for love of Him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to

those who ask, and to set slaves free; and observeth proper worship and payeth the poor-due.

And those who keep their treaty when they make one, and the patient in tribulation and adversity

and time of stress. Such are they who are sincere. Such are the Allah-fearing."

One thing i dont' understand is why muslim move here, instead of the middle east, since we are very open culture and their religion is far from being free.. And when they are here they dont' like the ameircan way.. so i dont get it..
it's like france, muslims move to france knowing that they are a very modern, open culture.. i don't get it.

Muslim Americans are better educated, vote in a greater ratio, pay more taxes, and are involved in more upper level professions than the average American. Who said we don't like it here. In fact most are now second generation or new converts who know only the USA as their home. What don't you get?
01:10 AM on 11/05/2011
No i agree, but i'm saying that they are such a conservative culture and we are such an open culture, i'm surprised they like us here..

For a group which has inflicted so much violence on other religion after labeling as "idolators", why are so many people bowing down to a rock inside a tent?

I guess it sums up the human race pretty succintly that the "largest human assembly in the world" is people bowing down to a giant black rock in the middle of the desert.

Yes the Kumba Mela especially the one held every 12 years is the largest assembly of humans together to celebrate a single event.

That's probably what Muslims think about us every time we invade and occupy one of their countries, something we've been doing for almost 200 years

What I meant is that there are diseases that have been stopped in all other parts of the world that arise only because those who refuse to be immunized go to the Hajj, spread the disease, and Muslims bring it back to their home countries, including (really?) Polio.

From Wikidepdia:

Mingling of visitors from many countries, some of which have poor health care systems still plagued by preventable infectious diseases, can lead to the spread of epidemics. If an outbreak were to occur on the road to Mecca, pilgrims could exacerbate the problem when they returned home and passed their infection on to others. This was more of a problem in the past. One such disease, which has prompted response from the Saudi government, is meningitis as it became a primary concern after an international outbreak following the Hajj in 1987. Due to post-Hajj outbreaks globally of certain types of meningitis in previous years, it is now a visa requirement to be immunised with the ACW135Y vaccine before arrival. Every year, the Saudi government publishes a list of required vaccines for pilgrims, which for 2010 also includes yellow fever, polio, and influenza.[9]

All Myth is Astronomy

There is absolutely nothing whatsoever original in the copy cat Abrahamic Religions. The Kaaba Cube has 4x90=360x6=2160x12=21,600+4320=25,920 year Great Wheel of World Age Precession marking the passage of 12 World Ages in the unfolding of the creation of the Soul of Man. It is all Zoroastrian which itself came down through the Hindus from an ancient Star Religion about 9,000-7,000 years ago that was spread from the Middle East to Celtic Europe. Read the book...uh..."Hamlet's Mill".

http://phoenixandturtle.net/excerptmill/santillana.htm

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam at their deepest encoded level are all about the Astronomy of World Ages and the profound Astrology of Good and Bad Human Attributes. This last Pisces Passage was a The TOTAL DOWNER of the Arrogant Usurper Popes, Mullahs, and Reverend Bob Universities "Chief Priests, Scribes, and Pharisees" Clergy Meme. The Warning is about the invention of NUCLEAR WEAPONS (Burnt Offering) in the World Age Passage from Pisces to Aquarius. This is all completely over the heads of the "believers" in these "religions" today.

Whoever survives will just shake their heads in astonishment at the mind bending ignorance of these people in their planetary murder-suicidal ethos.

Pathetic.
