Interpol Launches Campaign To Save Asian Tigers

11/ 3/11 08:29 AM ET   AP

HANOI, Vietnam -- Interpol has launched a campaign to help save the world's last wild tigers in the 13 Asian countries where they still exist, winning praise from conservationists.

The project will link international wildlife officials with customs and law enforcement officers in the 13 nations to help stem poaching and smuggling of tiger parts for use in expensive traditional medicines.

"Having a force like Interpol working on this will give the effort a great boost," Mike Baltzer, head of WWF's Tigers Alive Initiative, said Thursday, a day after the campaign was unveiled at an Interpol meeting in Hanoi.

Poaching and habitat fragmentation have caused Asia's wild tiger population to decline from about 100,000 in 1900 to fewer than 3,500 today, according to Interpol.

Their habitat spans China, Russia, Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Tigers do not live in the wild on other continents.

In November 2010, leaders from the 13 countries pledged to double the world's wild tiger population by 2022.

The Interpol project "will reduce trafficking in tiger parts, with the add-on effect of reducing other wildlife crime in Asia," Robert Zoellick, head of the World Bank and founder of the Global Tiger Initiative that will oversee the project, told Interpol delegates in a video address.

The project calls for connecting Asian law enforcement and customs officers with wildlife officials from the U.S., Britain, the World Bank and the Smithsonian Institution.

I hope this makes an impact! The natural world would be a less beautiful place without wild tigers!

Seems to be good news. Hopefully it will have impact. What this article doesn't mention is that of the less than 3,500 tigers that remain in the wild - only ~1,000 are breeding females. The tiger is on the brink. Only a dedicated effort to change how humans relate to non-human animals is going to save the tiger, and many other species. We're in the midst of the 6th great extinction, with humans being the cause. Will we change?

Will humans ever learn to stop killing the other species on this planet and learn to live in harmony and with tbe proper balance intended by our Creator and Mother Nature ? It's good to know there are people willing to address the tiger issue. Let's hope it's not too little too late.

Maybe you should do some research & find out that the Biggest threat to Tigers is Loss of Habitat! This is d/t increasing human population centers, which infringes on their jungle habitat! Somehow, I'm not sure How or WHY, You think this has something to do USA politics, Republicans in particular. It has to do with 7 BILLION people inhabiting this planet, & increasing every minute!

Tigers are marvelous in their utterly graceful movements, especially when they are moving rapidly. (not that i would want to see one moving toward me rapidly) It would be a real loss for there to be no more tigers in the wild.

I believe it will only make the problem worse. It will make the price of the tigers' body parts skyrocket on the black market.

It really is tragic what has happened to tiger populations around the world. Lets hope we can stop things before more become extinct.
