Molly Katchpole, Recent College Grad And Part-Time Nanny, Helps End Bank Of America Fee

WASHINGTON — Recent college graduate Molly Katchpole has $2,200 to her name, holds down two part-time jobs – one of them as a nanny – and describes her financial situation as paycheck-to-paycheck.

So when Bank of America announced that it would begin charging debit card users a $5 monthly fee, Katchpole got mad and started an online petition. More than 300,000 people signed it.

And on Tuesday, the nation's second-largest bank backed down.

Now the 22-year-old is getting the credit for the end of the debit card fee.

Katchpole is a Rhode Island native who lives in Washington, where she does freelance work for a political communications firm that supports unions and other Democratic-leaning causes. She describes herself as a progressive and says she stands in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement. She has a tattoo below her collarbone that reads: "Empathy."

"I believe that is the most important quality that a person can have, is the ability to empathize with others," she said. "When I first started the petition, and even now, people were saying, `Just close your bank account and go to another bank.' I think people are forgetting that not everybody can easily close their bank and join a credit union. There are some neighborhoods in this country where there's only one bank."

Shortly after Bank of America announced plans a month ago to start charging the fee, she put the petition on Change.org, a nonpartisan website that allows individuals and advocacy groups to launch campaigns on any topic.

After the bank relented, Change.org declared on its home page: "We Won."

"It's an awesome display of the potential power that real people can have when they come together," said Ben Rattray, the site's founder and CEO.

Katchpole credited the popularity of her petition to good timing, calling it "stupid" for Bank of America to announce the fees in the midst of the Wall Street protests. Her boyfriend, Ben Sisko, said Katchpole succeeded because she expressed her outrage so clearly and concisely.

The petition read, in part: "The American people bailed out Bank of America during a financial crisis the banks helped create. ... How can you justify squeezing another $60 a year from your debit card customers? This is despicable."

A Bank of America executive called Katchpole more than three weeks ago to explain the fees, but by then it had already lost her as a customer to a community bank.

Bank spokesman Ernesto Anguill declined to say precisely what role the petition played. He said Bank of America scrapped the fees after listening to public reaction and gauging the competition from other banks that backed off plans for similar charges.

The outcry over Bank of America prompted other major banks, including JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co., to cancel tests of their own debit card fees.

Michael McCauley, a spokesman for Consumers Union, the advocacy arm of Consumer Reports Magazine, said the petition was a sign that Bank of America had misjudged its customers, just as Netflix did when it tried to divide its DVD-rental and online streaming businesses. He called Katchpole an inspiration to consumers who feel they are being treated poorly.

"The debit card issue pushed her over the edge, and she took action, and look at the impact that she's had. I think it's remarkable," he said.

Katchpole grew up in Cumberland, R.I., a town of 33,000, and graduated last spring from Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I., with a degree in art and architectural history. She was on the debate team in high school and wrote letters to her local paper.

"When she had something that she wanted to say, she usually said it, and if she felt other people needed to know, then she found the avenue to express it," said her mother, Kathy Katchpole, a physical therapist. "She's always had pretty strong views one way or the other."

She and her boyfriend live in a tiny, one-bedroom basement apartment, where they split the $1,250 rent. Sisko works as a paralegal, and Katchpole is hoping to find a full-time job in politics.

Katchpole's parents and boyfriend remain Bank of America customers.

"I haven't decided if I'm going to switch yet," Sisko said. After all, he said, "the petition worked!"

Most people would say
Well I am only one person what can I do
Over the years in this country the big Corp and some in our government have led us down this road in thinking we do not have any power in making change occur.I am glad to see that this is is is not the case
And I see people becoming more and more active in the process that we call America
And some with these powers are seeing the game has changed
And when these banks say we have canceled our plans to test the fee increase
This was not a test it was a plan and there plan told them well what can they do
It's not like a nanny will step up and get us to back off Right......Wrong

It goes to show you the power of social media to change corporations cultures and behaviors, perhaps more powerful and expeditous than a legal battle. However, BofA and other banks are missing the whole point about customer service and strategy. I wish all bank executives would follow the 14 steps outlined in a book to make them Leaner, more agile and higher quality organizations through six sigma (see https://www.createspace.com/3361323 ), It's not just the strategy but execution of these 14 steps that enables banks to produce better margins and savings that they canh pass on to their customers.

BAC doesn't care about charging people 5 extra dollars, they care about all the bad publicity. That girl rocks!
03:30 PM on 11/04/2011
I really don't think this woman had anything to do with BOA deciding not to charge the debit fee...REALLY? How much did she pay for this publicity??? What about all of the nationwide news stories, the protests, the emails, the facebook postings, etc. etc. Most importantly,,,what about all the customers jumping ship? In comparison, this petition is 'small beans'.

Why the hate?

No hate...just an educated individual that goes nuts when rumor and innuendo is spread without question. I read the Emperor's New Clothes when I was a child.

It had to start somewhere
And if you trace it back you will find her
So I do not agree
08:49 PM on 11/06/2011
It did...announcement made by BOA and immediately (same day) picked up by the nightly news and broadcast. It was followed by publication in newspapers. Unless she is more of an insider than the press, she had to find out about it somewhere. That's just common sense.

The petition did nothing. Who read it? Customers fleeing BOA is the reason they flip flpped.

Notice how the BofA CEO pointed out they looked at what their competitors were doing and that they had backed down from their testing out fees? Bank of America didn't do this because they listened to the people, they did it because it might hurt their bottom line if people went to their competitors. Oh, to be young and idealistic.

......I highly doubt it was 'this womans' doing that got BoA from introducing the charge. People really need to stop false idolizing people simply cause they got up in the morning...........

REALLY...and I thought it was because I post all the time to withdraw your funds and do it in CASH every chance I get

Good for her but also good for the banks who should be able to charge whatever they want. The real problem is the cooersive government policies and culture of entitlements which seek to limit what the banks can charge in other areas and therefore the need for banks to obtain fees whereever there is still a legal place to charge.

The power of ONE person, standing up to injustice is staggering!!!! If we, the 99% who have been harmed by Corporate greed and corruption, would all stand TOGETHER we could accomplish SO much!!! Some Americans, who have been blinded by promises and used as the mouthpiece for these very same corrupt people, actually work AGAINST their own self interest!!!
MILLIONS of people are hurting because of the Corporate/Wall Sreet caused Recession, it's time for us to let them know that we will NOT take it anymore!

UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL, and fail.

I agree we can do this, but, as you pointed out, it must be everyone standing TOGETHER, with one clear goal. I agree we must stop the ultra rich corporations. But to do that, we must also include the greedy politicians, who allow them, and even help them, do it. If the corporations didn't pay so much to get politicians to help them cheat America, they could easily afford to pay their fair share. Vote out the corrupt politicians and elect anyone who will stop the loopholes that allow the greedy corporations to thrive.
UNITE THE VOTE! That will get their attention. If one person could start so much, think of what would happen if we all threatened to vote united.

The $5.00 was only going to be charged IF you use your debit card to make purchases, so if you go back to using checks, or pull money out of the ATM before shopping, you could have not encrued the $5.00 charge. Yes, this is a pain to do and heaven help us if we ONLY want to do things the easy way.
NOW, because of this, Bank of America says they will charge the $5.00 to folks who don't keep a minimum balance or some other crap. Some months I can't keep a minimum balance since I'm in the process of filing for disability. So now we have to pay for her stupidity of not thinking this through. BofA is going to get their money some way or another and now the poorer folks will have to pay once again.

And yet, you don't blame the BANK for it's greed, but a young woman who saw the injustice in a trumped up fee and actually DID something about it.
People like YOU make the fight harder than it has to be.

Impeach them all!
02:46 PM on 11/04/2011
Then you should look in to banks that do not charge you if you do not keep a minimum deposit. Bashing this woman for standing up to a corrupt organization is ridiculous. If BoA had been my bank, I would have done the same thing. I only bank where the checking account is free and you should as well. Unless you WANT to keep paying fees? As for the inconvenience of writing checks or getting cash out, the whole point of debit cards was to make banking, shopping, purchasing easier. And the whole reason they want to charge for its use is because they got slapped in the face by the Government for excessive fee charging and interest rates and they are trying to PUNISH their customers for it. Definitely not a smart move.
11:15 PM on 11/05/2011
Megan,
I've had accounts at Bof A since the early eighties, when it was Nowlin Bank..I've always had free checking there and have never paid fees for anything. So by using checks and the ATM they weren't going to be taking any of MY money...they'd have been taking it from someone else who is "inconvenienced" by using checks and ATM's..
