White House, Pushing Richard Cordray's Nomination To CFPB, Cites Occupy Wall Street

Occupy Wall Street

First Posted: 11/03/11 07:00 PM ET Updated: 01/03/12 05:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration has been careful in its handling of the Occupy Wall Street movement, expressing sympathy with the sentiment behind it but never going so far as to formally endorse it. But on financial regulatory and consumer protection issues, there is a clear -- and inviting -- overlap between politics and the protests.

On Thursday, top members of the Obama administration's communications and economic team held a conference call designed to put pressure on Senate Republicans to confirm Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The call highlighted testimony from the CFPB's head of Servicemember Affairs Holly Petraeus, wife of general David Petraeus, in which she argued that an understaffed CFPB left family members of veterans vulnerable to predatory payday lenders and debt collectors.

At one point during the call, the question was raised: to what extent has the Occupy Wall Street movement affected the politics of Cordray's stalled nomination?

"I don't think that we are going to speculate on the impact of Occupy Wall Street on Republican senators," Deputy Senior Advisor to the President Stephanie Cutter said, cautiously.

"The sentiments that lots of people who are out there as part of 'Occupy Wall Street' have -- not just on Wall Street but on Main Streets across the country -- those sentiments are shared by lots of Americans," she added. "Having Richard Cordray in place obviously would help them."

This is about as close as the administration has come to pointing out ideological symmetry between the president's agenda and the Occupy Wall Street movement. And it makes sense. Elizabeth Warren, who before launching a Senate campaign in Massachusetts helped set up the CFPB, has declared that her life's mission is shared by the OWS protesters. For that, she's been abjectly criticized.

Occupy Wall Street remains a phenomenon that's very much removed from Capitol Hill, with Congress not sure whether to conceptually embrace it or call it a mob. The 44 Republican Senators that have pledged to oppose Cordray's nomination unless the CFBP is restructured haven't indicated they're backing down from that threat. Meanwhile, with just six weeks left in the current congressional term, the window to get Cordray through the Senate is closing.

On the call, the administration officials insisted that they were not considering a recess appointment, which would allow the president to fill the vacancy for a limited period of time without congressional approval.

"We have an opportunity to confirm Richard Cordray as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in the United States Senate and if Republicans would take away their block on him ... Unless Republicans break that block we are not going to be able to move forward on a vote."

Ahem: " For that, she's been abjectly criticized." Please look up "abject." You plainly do not know what it means. Could we please hire some reporters who know English?

What consumer protection will this bureau provide us that we can’t provide ourselves? Don’t like ATM fees, then change banks. Don’t like payday loans, don’t get one. Meanwhile, what is Obama doing about the banks’ death-grip on credit and commerce? We’ve been sold this idea that finance reform means cracking down on transaction fees and pawn shops, because our democracy is compromised by the very Wall Street interests that truly need reform.

Where were these protesters when the dems controlled congress? Now that obama is fighting an uphill battle; they want to run around smashing windows and torching private property

Occupy is not about violence but maybe The Tea Party would hire thugs to do the nasty deeds in the the protests name... Considering The KKK and Neo-Nazis want to join The Tea Party because they share many similar agendas it shouldn't surprise anyone who is doing the violence...

No surprise that 44 republiars oppose a nomination that would help the poor and middle class attack corporate terrorism against the 99%. After all, these 44 losers are bought and paid for by corporate mafia thugs.

If you have read my posts, I am no fan of Obama. I voted for him, but his dealings with public enemies of the people, Boehner and McConnell, are enough for me to abandon him. I am hoping for a Bernie Sanders like person to enter this race. I am tired of Obama giving in to the rat infested enemy of the American people, the Republiars.

Democrats act like they care. Democratic supporters love to be pandered to. They want theatre. And Democrats give it to them...and then they offshore your jobs, import foreign workers to drive down wages, and throw trillions at the rich.

Well, the money has to come from somewhere - so many of the middle c;lass and poor don't have the money to donate. So Obama can take the $$ but hopefully he will also be cognizant of his duty to the American People. Michael Moore was interviewed in Denver on Rachel Maddow - In his documentary "Captialism - A Love Story" at the conculsion he says "I can't do it alone" - I think he has finally gotten some serious help. Obama should do what needs to be done to fight the thugs and baggers and it he uses their money - oh well, pay back is a B*&ch. Wall Street took tax payer money then screwed their saviors.

He has received more from wall street than all the GOP COMBINED! There is certainly a reason behind their giving to him! You really think they are going to give him $16 million so far for him to hurt them later??

Occupy should move to DC and take the bull by the horns. That is where the crimes are being commited against the American people. They should storm congress and stay until something actually gets done. Wall street dosen't write the laws or loopholes. They come from our corrupt congress.

And personally, I'm getting tired of hearing the conservatives all say: "They are protesting in the wrong place; they should be protesting the White House."

No matter what else can be said about the Right, they sure do have that messaging discipline down.

Cantor had to resort to putting on the Depends when faced with speaking to a well educated crowd at University of Penn. The students who actually think they can support this country and contribute to preserving ownership of our property and freedoms, ACTUALLY SCARED the hell out of him. Maybe he was speaking on how much he invested in shorts, then set out to further devastate the economy.

Moderators, Are you deciding whether to post my refutation of Soros's partnership in starting the OWS movement? Don't dare think that he was at all aligned with The Anonymous and Lulzsec groups that had hundreds of thousands of followers. I never saw any large financing from him ever, especially NOT when the brave few took to protesting in Zuccotti Park.

Don't knock Soros's black helicopter. He might airlift much needed winter supplies for our movement. Some on the right try so hard to attribute the movement to Soros. lol. I have followed the movement for some time and saw no particular fixation on Soros more than any other source of factual information before the protest. A few brave Anons have gone out to Zuccotti park with nothing but the knowledge that WE were faithfully committed to addressing issues OUR govt and msm so carefully avoid. If Soros sent the protesters, you can GUARANTEE, it wouldn't have taken the HP and MSM so long to pick it up.

Obama, House, Senate 2012 for the sake of America
08:04 AM on 11/04/2011
Supply-side economics doesn't work. But some devotees are as stubborn as Maoists were. Deng Xiaoping, a one-time Communist follower of Mao, who Mao had imprisoned for many years said: “It doesn't matter if a cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice.” Likewise, Republicans need to realize that their favorite pet theory hasn't "caught mice" (gotten results) as far as lowering our National Debt. China and Russia have paid off their National Debts. The only President in three decades that had a budget surplus, and was paying down the National Debt was President Clinton. We were on course to totally pay off our National Debt by 2012. Then Bush arrived and totally sabotaged that successful strategy. "If something's not broken, don't fix it." Obama has been attempting to fix things that are broken, but has been viciously sabotaged from Day One, by the Party of No.
08:47 AM on 11/04/2011
Breaking news: The national debt increased every one of the 8 years under Clinton... When exactly was he "paying down the National Debt"?? http://www.treasurydirect.gov/NP/NPGateway
And, your "on course to totally pay off our National Debt by 2012" statement is as laughable as every other government "prediction".. Grow up and learn that you are complicit in this two party scam, perpetrated expertly by Republican and Democrat thieves, and endorsed by imbeciles that wear their party label before their American label (which should be a label of individualism).. Blaming everything on the other party somehow makes you feel good, as if you joined the right team... The simple minded amongst us repeat what they are told by their political party mommies, their federal handlers.. Good little boy, do and say what you are told by your Republican or Democrat leaders… You are like Sheep led to a slaughter, it’s sad, very, very sad.

As long as the GOP continues to fight dirty and use the filibuster in violation of its agreement with Senate Democratic leadership, it won't matter how much pressure Obama applies. Better to wait for the next recess and then confirm appointees en masse.

Hmmmm. Cain is blaming Perry, and Fox News is all over the story.

You have to understand that the American people, in the end, only get to vote for pre-selected candidates. All candidates must be vetted by powerful corporate and banking elites and party insiders. Then the corporate media and party insiders go to work and destroy any candidate that doesn't pass muster. Romney has always been the pre-approved candidate for the GOP. The media gave Cain a pass for a while, although party insiders such as Rove were on the air daily bashing him. Rove has also bashed Perry. Eventually each of the candidates will be pilloried by the media, with clips several times an hour of their most damaging statements or actions.

Once you understand primaries, elections, and voting are all an expensive scam perpetrated on American voters to make them think we actually have a choice, you'll be able to sit back and watch what goes on and recognize that what's happening was inevitable. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be outraged about it, but unless we were able to get money out of politics, it won't change.
