Bill Clinton Book 'Back To Work' Offers Job Creation Policies

Bill Clinton Book Back To Work

BETH FOUHY   11/ 3/11 09:07 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK — Former President Bill Clinton says in a new book that last summer's political fight over raising the U.S. debt ceiling made the nation look "weak and confused" overseas and he doesn't know why President Barack Obama didn't seek a hike in the limit when Democrats still controlled both houses of Congress.

He says the final deal did little to create jobs or solve the longer-term debt crisis.

In his book, "Back to Work," Clinton analyzes the factors that contributed to the nation's current economic woes and offers several policy prescriptions he says would create jobs and make the U.S. more competitive. While he generally praises Obama for taking steps to mitigate the financial crisis and deep recession, he also gently dings the president for poor communication and strategic misfires.

The book is scheduled for release next Tuesday by publisher Knopf. The Associated Press bought a copy on Thursday.

Clinton, a Democrat, describes the current state of the country as "a mess" and largely blames the anti-government sentiment embodied in the tea party movement that has held sway since the 1980s. But Clinton also criticizes Obama and other Democratic lawmakers for not making a stronger case for the steps they took to stabilize the U.S. economy in 2009, like the bank and auto company bailouts and the $787 billion economic stimulus program.

Campaigning for Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections, Clinton said he took it on himself to explain "in plain language" what Obama and the party had accomplished. He says in the book he was thwarted because Democrats had no national message to counter the anti-government headwinds they were facing.

Clinton says he campaigned that year primarily for candidates and lawmakers who had supported his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, in her often-bitter primary race against Obama. Hillary Clinton is now secretary of state in the Obama administration and is precluded from political activity.

Bill Clinton says he and Vice President Joe Biden urged the Democratic National Committee to distribute a clear set of talking points to activists so they would know how to discuss what the party had accomplished.

"We couldn't persuade the decision makers to do so," Clinton said.

Democrats suffered historic defeats that year, losing control of the House and giving up several Senate seats.

During the 2011 debt ceiling fight, which brought the U.S. Department of the Treasury close to defaulting on its debts, Clinton publicly urged Obama to raise the ceiling unilaterally and cite constitutional provisions for doing so. In his book, he appears mystified still as to why Obama allowed such a perilous showdown.

Obama now has "a tough hand to play" in negotiating with Congress, Clinton writes.

Clinton recalls his own eight years in the White House in glowing terms, noting how his economic policies helped create 22 million jobs and substantially reduce the federal debt. Among other things, he says, he was able to persuade many wealthy people to accept higher taxes because "I didn't attack them for their success."

Clinton strongly criticizes Republicans for taking the country deeply into debt under George W. Bush's presidency. He says both major parties must agree to investments that will strengthen the U.S. going forward, such as green energy and infrastructure improvements. He also advocates reforming the tax code, cutting some corporate taxes and giving businesses greater incentives to hire.

Officials at the Democratic and Republican national committees didn't immediately reply to requests from the AP seeking comment Thursday night.

The new book, fully titled "Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government for a Strong Economy," isn't Clinton's first. His 2004 memoir, "My Life," was a worldwide best-seller. He also wrote "Giving," a handbook for civic activism.

Bill Clinton said this in a recent interview:

"My taxes were cut a lot in the last decade and my income went up a lot. I believe people like me should pay, not because it's a bad thing to be successful, but because the country's made us successful and we're in the best position to help do something about the debt and invest in the future of the young people to give them a better future."

This is precisely what Adam Smith wrote in "Wealth of Nations," the seminal tome of modern economics, which, like Rand and Jefferson, people quote when they think it bolsters their arguments, but few have ever actually read.

Clinton contributed to the mess we're in, he was a corporate Democrat - NAFTA, the repealing of Glass-Steagall in 1999, just to name a couple of things that were harmful to our economy during his tenure as president...(Don't get me wrong, things were better then, but I believe we've been going backwards in so many ways since Reagan became president. He was the one who really gave voice to the "blame government" rhetoric.)

He was dealing with a dysfunctional Republican (pardon the redundancy) House and Senate (more concerned with his bald monkey than the country), and he was trying to get a necessary tax increase through, so he compromised on Glass-Steagall, which was entirely a GOP joint.

Clinton has said since that he should have vetoed it, but didn't. It was a bipartisan disaster.

I can't imagine anything that looks worse than invading acountry for lies and then staying like we are doing them a favor or running predator drones like we think predators are good things in human society.. or taking our covert operation against the soviets gone wild out on the Afghan people. Then following that up by a crashing mortgage speculation bubble that drives countries into bankrupcy but is just business as usual in the glamourous free market world economy set free by the fall of communism to do anything with the world they want in the multi-national corporate headquarters'... then selling our dysfunctional non-existent democracy as the only effective form of government for the world short of no govt in the new world order without borders of the new world corpoarte banana republic that is. And it is the model of western civilization that is having severe problems as we approach the limits of our planet and learning how to live within them.

Odd that now Clinton has some solutions to the problems in this country, many or most of which he created. Just think NAFTA, consolidation of media, repeal of Glass/Stegal, the Derivative Modernization Act to name a few. Wonder what he thinks of those things now.

I have heard and read that he does regret them and admitted that they are at the core of the current relentless crisis.

He could have vetoed all of those laws back then. Now we have a run away (crazy) freight train, and the light at the end of the tunnel is another train heading right for us on the same tracks - it the reality express. I would hope that Clinton would acknowledge the damage he did, along with his good acts. I'd prefer seeing that first. Obama ha been in a box since he was elected. Populist anger has to reach fever pitch before constructive change can come about.

The title of Bill Clinton's book - "Back to Work" is telling. Clinton is like Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. He just won't get off of the stage. Eight years as president were not enough for him. He has to keep showing that he knows how to run the country 20 years after he came into office. Clinton keeps comparing the condition of the country now to what it was when he was president. There is no comparison. The economy was not completely destroyed when he took office. The republicans were problematic, but were not yet completely insane. Some of them actually worked with him to pass legislation. Clinton also fails to acknowledge the things he did that helped to put the country in the ditch. He passed NAFTA and presided over some of the most damaging deregulation of the banks. I realize that he has a grudge against President Obama because he thought his wife would waltz into the White House, but the Democratic voters disagreed and she lost the nomination. He has managed to completely reverse my view of him from mostly positive to mostly negative.

When Clinton is doing all of his analyzing why millions of jobs have been lost maybe he should re-examine his NAFTA The North American Free Trade Agreement and the millions of jobs it cost workers in this Nation by shipping maunfacturing jobs overseas !
I am a Progressive Democrat and facts are facts that along with the Bush tax cuts has been a great destrutive cause in the jobs loss !

"This country is a mess" because your indiscretions led to W. Bush being voted in, allegedly, in 2000.

Get your facts straight. Bush was never voted into office....especially the first time.

The Day America Lost its Way

http://www.tellingthoughts.com/us-politics/the-day-america-lost-its-way

November 5 / 1999 / The New York Times

"The decision to repeal the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 provoked dire warnings from a handful of dissenters that the deregulation of Wall Street would someday wreak havoc on the nation’s financial system. The original idea behind Glass-Steagall was that separation between bankers and brokers would reduce the potential conflicts of interest that were thought to have contributed to the speculative stock frenzy before the Depression".

Clinton says the country is in a mess. I wonder if he's ever looked into the mirror. Let's see Bill:
NAFTA a total disaster for the middle class. Signing the repeal of Glass-Steagle, giving the Banksters and Wall Street a free pass to bring down the economy. And Finally, going along with the right to makes cuts to Medicare. Clinton has laid the foundation for letting Republicans run amuk and trash our economy.

Clinton talks about the amount of money banks have sitting not being loaned out (money borrowed at zero, which costs nothing) taxes them on excess reserves.

I'm so tired of Bill trying to make our president look bad. I wish Ted Kennedy was still with us, he would tell Bill where to get off. This is why the clintons lost Ted's endorsement...The Clintons's think they are all that and a bag of chops...

Funny how our politicians fail to admit that their 30 years of banking deregulations, the repeal of Glass Stegal and NAFTA caused this mess. No jobs, and the banks gone wild. Yet, they only think of repealing Social Security, food stamps, veterans benefits, and Medicaid to solve the crisis. Modern day "Robin Hoods!" They are all professional thieves.
