French Bulldog And NYPD Police Horse Become Friends (VIDEO)

French Bulldog And Nypd Horse

First Posted: 11/04/11 06:05 PM ET Updated: 11/04/11 06:05 PM ET

Before you dismiss the following as yet another trite display of animal cuteness gone viral, do yourself a favor and watch in its entirety. Because we can't think of a better way to start your weekend than with a sweater-donning pup sheepishly making friends with an NYPD horse (and near the site of the Occupy Wall Street protests, no less!).

Yes, we also thought that this link would bring us to the previous dog and horse buddy video, but it's not that. It's another one. This one is better.

Protestors and police officials take note: if these guys can become best friends forever, why can't we all?

Watch as the curious bulldog twirls and teases the friendly steed:

Nice little dog.  She is trying to "work".  She is as hard-wire to go for the horse's nose as a bird dog is hard-wire to point.  If she were an old time, working bull dog, she would be encouraged to bite the nose of a cow and hold it while the animal was being branded or otherwise worked on.  Of course, those bull dogs were bigger, but this little one has still got it between the ears and i mean that in a good way.  She is bold and unafraid.  That hard-wired instinct can be hard-wired into positive friendliness.

Though.... there was one iffy moment and that's when Frenchie head-butts the little girl.  She was not being friendly there.  This was "her" horse.  She was being territorial and it should have been corrected.

There's a lesson to be heeded when animals act more civilized toward each other than their human counterparts. P.S. to keep you're head from exploding & to focus solely on the cuteness: turn the volume down.

Is it possible to make the horses look good by giving them physically fit riders? If I was a horse carrying a fat guy all day, I'd be pretty embarrassed. Then again, I guess all the fit cops are on foot patrol.

Did you know that horses did not evolve to walk, run, trot or be ridden on pavement?
It is extremely hard on their legs.
Thoroughbreds do not run on paved tracks. Police should be required to ride Segways, bicycles or motorcycles. It is cruel and barbaric to ride or drive horses on pavement.
Unfeeling j3rks.

You are very wrong there - sorry, but this horse has no shoes and is perfectly fine on pavement.
Pavement is much smoother and less abrasive than gravel, and it doesn't poke into the sole the way gravel does. If a horse is sound on gravel, pavement won't hurt her any.

"And in addition to the clear danger it poses to people, the horses’ hooves and legs suffer from constant pounding on hard pavement and the smoke and exhaust fumes from urban traffic can make them ill."
Riding Horses on Sand
By Kentucky Equine Research Staff · October 26, 2011
Concussion is the force transmitted up a horse’s leg each time a hoof hits the ground. Structures in the hoof and leg absorb concussion, but over time, the cumulative effects of concussion can cause lameness, joint damage, and arthritis. Softer surfaces reduce concussion on bones and cartilage, but may throw the stress onto soft tissues instead.

A study in France showed that horses exercising on sand had a lower rate of concussion and vertical loading. Four horses were fitted with instruments that recorded acceleration and ground reaction forces generated with each step. Each horse was then ridden at a trot on firm wet sand, deep wet sand, deep dry sand, and asphalt pavement.

This was not a comparison, ever, to gravel which can bruise the frogs of the hooves.
You, my dear, are wrong. I have concern for any equine in which someone would not take the rudimentary care for their one instinct of defense, flight.

I hope this police mount gets better care than their carriage horses. The carriage horses are stabled in buildings, several floors up, that were never built for horses. They are tied with a short lead in a "cell" a few feet wider than their bodies. They can not lie down, turn around or ever allowed to relax and get restorative sleep or rest. Not infrequently, they drop dead on the streets.
This police mount does not look as if it is being curried or cared for properly. It's hooves need attention.
Just another "machine" for uncaring, cheap, self-centered people.
Shame, shame, shame. Please do not support the carriage industry by taking carriage rides.
Save a horse, walk or take a taxi.

Stories about the abuse of the carriage horses are mostly BS and being driven by a real estate developer named Nislick who wants to get his hands on the property where the horses are now stabled. In fact, the carriage horses are closely monitored by city inspectors; they are not allowed to work in extreme weather conditions, they get regular veterinary care, and their stalls are plenty large enough for them to turn around and lie down. From a recent NY Times editorial:

"The horses are well treated and monitored closely by the city. We dropped unannounced into Clinton Park Stables, one of four allowed to provide city carriages, and saw that the horses are treated better than advertised. They have large stalls, water that flows with the nudge of a nose and plenty of hay."

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/05/opinion/some-carriages-should-not-be-horseless.html?_r=2

The carriage horses are not dropping dead on the streets "frequently." One carriage horse died this year; the cause of death could not be determined, but there was no sign of abuse.

And the sad truth is that if the carriage horse trade is banned, at least some of those horses would soon be shipped to the slaughterhouse.

Also, the NYPD horses look well conditioned to me. I think SitandStay needs her eyes examined.
