Gabrielle Giffords Vows To Return To Congress In New Book

By AMANDA LEE MYERS and MICHELLE PRICE   11/ 4/11 11:49 PM ET   AP

PHOENIX -- When President George H.W. Bush came to visit her in the hospital, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords could say only "Wow!" and another word she had been uttering frequently at the time, "chicken."

Months later, when she was shown photos of famous people to see if she recognized faces, Giffords looked at Arnold Schwarzenegger and replied, more or less accurately: "Messin' around. Babies."

These and other details emerge in a new book written by Giffords and her husband that offers the most personal look yet at her slow, agonizing recovery after being shot in the head at point-blank range.

The memoir, titled "Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope," describes Giffords' efforts over the past 10 months to relearn how to walk and talk, and her painful discovery that six people were killed in the Jan. 8 attack outside a Tucson grocery store.

The Associated Press purchased an advance copy of the book, which is set for release Nov. 15.

The book is written from the perspective of her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly. But Giffords herself delivers the last chapter – a single page of short sentences and phrases called "Gabby's Voice" in which she says her goal is to get back to Congress.

"I will get stronger. I will return," she wrote.

The book also reveals that the couple, who got married in 2007, was trying to have a baby. Giffords, 41, had undergone several rounds of fertility treatments in the last few years and had hoped to get pregnant early in 2011.

The book does not say whether Giffords will seek re-election next year. Kelly said the couple did not want to rush a decision. The deadline to formally declare her intentions is in May.

Aides have repeatedly emphasized that her focus is on recovery and that there is no timetable for making a decision about her political future. The Arizona Democrat was shot just days after being sworn in for her third term.

Giffords stunned colleagues by appearing on the House floor Aug. 1 to vote for the debt ceiling deal, but she has largely avoided the public eye, spending most of her time at TIRR Memorial Hermann, a rehabilitation center in Houston.

Giffords recently competed two weeks of intensive therapy sessions in Asheville, N.C., and returned to Houston on Friday evening, her staff said in a statement.

Some Democrats had hoped that Giffords would use her newfound fame to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Jon Kyl. But a Democratic strategist said Giffords has told Democrats in Arizona that she will not seek a Senate seat. The strategist spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss her plans.

In the memoir, Kelly recounts trying to tell his wife several times that she had been shot while meeting with constituents. But she didn't fully understand until March 12.

Kelly asked Giffords if she remembered being shot, and she replied that she did, although he said it was hard to know if she really did. She described what she recalled with three words: "Shot. Shocked. Scary."

Later that day, Kelly told her that six other people had been killed. Giffords was overcome with emotion and had trouble getting through her therapy.

It wasn't until July, weeks after being released from the Houston hospital to Kelly's home 25 miles away, that she learned who had been killed: a staff member, a federal judge, a 9-year-old girl and three other people Giffords did not know.

Twelve other people were wounded.

The suspect in the attack, Jared Lee Loughner, has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges. He is being forcibly medicated at a Missouri prison facility in an effort to make him mentally fit for trial.

When Kelly first saw Giffords after the shooting, she was in a coma, with her head partially shaved and bandaged, her face black and blue, and her body connected to tubes. He told her he loved her and assured her she would survive.

He said the darkest moment came later in Texas: Giffords realized she couldn't talk and panicked. Her eyes widened with fear, and she cried uncontrollably.

The book also offers lighter moments, like when former President Bush and his wife, Barbara, visited the Texas hospital, and when Giffords recognized the picture of Schwarzenegger and made an apparent reference to the former California governor's marital troubles.

Many people with brain injuries struggle to find the right words and repeat the same words and phrases. She eventually learned to talk again. Kelly said she was good at completing passages from the Constitution and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

The book was co-written by Jeffrey Zaslow, who collaborated on Randy Pausch's million-selling "The Last Lecture."

Anyone know where Gabby stands on HR822? In the previous session of Congress, she was a co-sponsor of the very similar HR197.

It is difficult to guess how having the back of her head blown apart by a gun might affect Giffords' views concerning Americans' rights to carry them.

All the best in recovery.
Please everyone, keep in mind there is a difference between a gun and a weapon. Hunting, self-defense and offensive acts differ but use the same equipment, in a lot of cases. However, an AK47 or automatic weapon are not for hunting or self-defense so ownership has to be questioned. Lumping all together creates an unclear picture or reality. A piece of steel plumbing pipe or a kitchen knife falls into the same category.
Don't blur the facts with radical general statements, from either side. It ruins our chances of gaining solutions, which we desperately need.
Glad you're okay Gabby. Hope things work for you.

I wholeheartedly agree with your best wishes for Ms. Giffords.

No, there isn't a difference between a gun and a weapon. A firearm is a weapon, as can be a bat, knife, rock, or length of rope/wire.

AK-47 (semiautomatic versions) can certainly be used for hunting. The ballistics are similar to a .30-.30 Winchester round, certainly one of the most popular rounds of all time for hunting. Federal law restricts fully automatic firearms from being used to hunt with, and they are difficult and expensive to legally obtain. However, there is absolutely no reason to question the possession of either type firearm by law abiding citizens.

It would be remiss of us not to acknowledge that guns are used to enact homicide in America more than twice as often as all other weapons combined.

Automatic weapons are highly regulated - more or less a non issue.

The type of weapons you are refering to, semi automatic rifles, make excellent home defense guns. Kind of silly when you think about it to say they are offensive weapons but have no purpose as a defensive weapon.

That's really not fair to her constituents. If she can't do the job, which it sure sounds as if she can't, she needs to step aside. Otherwise, it appears as an act of pure selfishness.

Steven it sounds like you may have gotten exactly what you deserved. You ran a business that served a drug and I am sure your business continued to serve people long after they were supposed to be cut off. Did you check people for weapons coming in? Don't blame guns for what you did and who you chose to associate with while running a business that contributes to crime including drunk driving and other crimes. You think criminals are going to give up guns then you belong in the psych ward. only the law bidding obey the law and you can't tell the criminal from the law bidding citizen. If you can please show the police how to do it. And I question what you claimed to have seen because i have lived in some ugly areas and never saw that much. If you honestly saw all of that then I suspect you ran a poor business nd had little to no control. I have handled guns for more than forty-five years and have only had to draw on one criminal to hold him for the cops. So don't pretend to tell me i am wrong when everything you say sounds like a lot of BS.

You go girl. A true American hero. Should have been a lesson for better gun control, but we all know how badly the GOP and NRA want to have their AK47's.

The gun the mad-man used to commit this terrible crime is no more to blame than the pencil your child used when he misspelled a common word. Perhaps if a responsible gun owner was present at this incident with his gun, fewer people would have been killed/injured. Sick, twisted, disturbed people will always find a way to get a gun.

you guys keep hoping for that responsible gun owner to save the day like jesus - ain't gonna happen!!!! same lame excuse. does not exist in any crime where there's violence and a gun.

theres more pencils on the streets than guns....horrible analogy..

She has done her best to fight to recover but it's pretty clear that she should resign her seat. It isn't doing her or her constituents any good pretending she is going to be able resume her duties at any time in the near future. I wish her the best and agree with most of her political views but this isnt the time to place sentimentality ahead of reality

Are you one of the doctors in charge of her care? I thought not. Her capabilities are up to her, her family, her doctors, and ultimately her district's voters to decide.

Sounds to me like she's got more going on between the ears than most Republican congressional representatives as it is.

Couldn't agree more. Gabby has been an inspiration and whatever she decides to do, I am sure it will be well thought out. As far as using the pencil rather than a gun ... boy, I sure wish that had been the case. This great story about Gabby has been turned into "oooh, they want to take away my guns!" Some of you are extremely reactive; check the mirror ... have you been shot lately? Have people who love you and care how you are doing? Get a grip!

I admire her strength and her incredible recovery. I just think it is a shame that what could have been a wonderful article was assigned to a horrible writer and an even worse editor. How exactly does someone "compete therapy?" Do they have races to do exercises with other patients?

She's already got free healthcare for life, along with all former members of Congress, even former House members who only serve all or part of one 2-year term. While I think it's outrageous - they should all have to pay for POOR coverage, just like the rest of us - that is obviously NOT the reason she would decide not to run.

More like the right-wing cause would be better off if she gave up her seat. She can spend as many hours in rehab as the GOP representatives spend on the golf course and still run laps around them.
