Gavin Polone Rips Michael Moore For Goldman Financing On Films

Michael Moore Occupy Denver

Michael Moore has been a vocal supporter and participant in the Occupy Wall Street protests since their inception, helping bring a megaphone to the residents of Zuccotti Park and its global offshoots. But as the most financially successful documentary filmmaker in Hollywood, he inevitably has business ties to money he might otherwise call un-pure, which has led one major film executive to label the director a hypocrite.

In a guest op-ed for The Hollywood Reporter, Gavin Polone, the producer behind such films and shows as "Zombieland," "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Gilmore Girls," calls Moore the leading "phony" of those in the entertainment industry who "claim to be liberal, caring, green and unaffected by their wealth and fame but in reality are just as self-centered and addicted to their huge, over-air-conditioned living spaces and private planes as those at whom they point their fingers."

Polone points to Moore receiving funding for his various films from the Weinstein brothers, including 2007's "Sicko," which was financed through a Weinstein Company fund set up by Goldman Sachs. Moore also received financing for "Fahrenheit 9/11" from the Weinsteins, who took on the film after Disney refused to release it through their Miramax banner.

"Fahrenheit" came out in 2004; in 2005, The Weinstein Company, the brothers' new company, independent of Disney, was established. It was alleged that Disney did not want to release "Fahrenheit" because of the film's critical look at the Bush administration, which could put Disney's tax breaks at risk.

Moore defended his relative wealth in a recent interview with CNN, and in a blog post on his own site.

Moore wrote that, in the wake of his first film success with 1989's "Roger and Me," he laid out personal guidelines to govern both his life and career. Included were paying his taxes, giving a large chunk of his money to charity and avoiding ownership of stock on the principle that he'd make money from work, not on the financial wrangling of Wall Street that hurt so many members of the middle class.

Polone, for his part, signed a first look deal with Columbia in 2005, which put out his "Zombieland" in 2009, and is putting out his upcoming film, "Premium Rush," in August of next year.

As the old saying goes "any publicity is good publicity". Thank him for keeping Michael Moore front stage center. After all Michael does stand up for the middle class.

The problem with any celebrity--not just Moore--making a political statement publicly is the motivations behind it.

I often get the impression that Michael Moore does things simply for the attention. For example, coming to Oakland a couple of weeks ago to appear at Occupy Oakland, and then making a surprise visit--uninvited--to the hospital where the vet injured by Oakland police had been interned. Moore, according to local news reports, was told by the hospital that the vet's family intended to bar his visit (and the vet had been moved to another facility anyway).

It seems that Moore wanted to stage a surprise visit to the hospital for maximum dramatic effect. And who would that benefit primarily? Michael Moore, of course.

You may have those unfavorable views of Moore because that's how the media instruct people to view him. Have you ever listened to him? Critics mock him and go after everything but the substance of what he says, because what he says is unassailable. Moore is a hero for standing up to right wing plutocrats who are destroying the American way of life.

It's interesting that Moore speaks up for working- and middle-class people who are victimized by greedy corporations, and some of his biggest critics are the numbskulls he's standing up for. It seems that people have become quite comfortable in the role of corporate slave and many don't wish to be helped. They've been inside the cave so long, they're afraid to leave.

"According to news reports..." Well, then it must be true. HA!

I think Moore does things mostly for his own good..or to keep his name out there..I have been to Cuba and I can tell you that Sicko was not at all an honest description of the medical system in Cuba..and I can guarantee you, had he approached Cuba on a little boat without giving them notice, he would not be here to talk about anything..His movie showed a great healthcare system that had all the things the people needed...well, in reality, it isn't so. Hospitals don't have medical supplies and medicines are not readily available..they have dialysis machines but no filters to keep the blood sanitary and everyone has hepititis because of it..as well, diabetics don't have meters to test their blood..so yes, they might have good doctors and they might have healthcare for all, but it isn't good healthcare...and so I recently made these comments on another article about Moore and people replied with so much anger, but all I was doing was telling you what I saw and heard from the people in Cuba...so for me, Michael Moore lost all his credibility and I will agree that he sounds good, but there is no true substance behind it.

And you seem to have a positive impression of Moore because you listen to his PR people. Unless you personally have spent time with the man, you cannot say what his character is either.

If there's money to be made, Goldman will be there. They have no misgivings on what the actual project is. It's all a financial calculation.

you want attention you have to make a statement , think a lot more will come of this , banks should make a profit but not able to legally rob you blind . Jon Corsine for one looks like he got caught , innocent don't run right out and get a lawyer . Wall Street Prison will fill up fast , maybe even make a good movie .

I don't see this as hypocrisy. I see this as using dirty money to bring the bastids down. The right wing seems to be bent on the idea that if you're a Liberal you should take an oath of poverty. It just doesn't work like that.

I think both sides of our government stink..they no longer care about the people who elect them, they do whatever they want, whatever will better their own ends..so unless we start having term limits, and making our government work for the people, all the people, we will be in bad shape. Why is Congress exempt from Obamacare? Why do they get a lifetime pension when they might have only been in office for a few years? How can that happen when they are out there criticizing Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid..why doesn't everything that applies to us, apply to them..We need to start taking back government because whether they are democrats or republicans, they are elected to do what is best and good for our country..we are their boss...

Is this the same Gavin Polone who just argued a few months ago that characters on network TV should be allowed to say the "F" word. Who said two years ago that"marriage is obsolete" and that Hollywood stars shouldn't be held to the same standards of conduct as the rest of society because "actually the norm is that they all cheat." The same Gavin Polone who once cautioned “you can’t push around Sumner Redstone and Rupert Murdoch." Is it that Gavin Polone is is now lecturing Moore on morality?
