Capital New York:

Layoffs have come to the Daily News.

Since this morning, staffers to be laid off have been getting called into a conference room to meet with senior vice president of human-resources Jeff Zomper. They're being told the layoffs are part of a "downsizing" operation at the paper. The layoffs aren't yet complete, (The New York Observer and the New York Post are putting the total number at 10); we've confirmed the names of a few of those who've been laid off so far.

Entitled to my opinion, not my facts

Everyone now has access to breaking news. By the time a newspaper hits your doorstep, most of its content already has been posted online.

Conservative newspapers are hurting, too. The NY Post is losing readers and the Washington Times is on life support, with fewer than 40,000 subscribers.

Hmmm...maybe that's why I haven't been able to log into my DN account to post anything for the past two days. Trouble brewing in the ranks?

These layoffs are indicative of an industry that has lost the confidence of is readers. Scandals without substance, T&A, celebrity sensationalism, will not keep readers.

I agree with you to some extent. Newspapers are dying out because most people now get their news online. That said, you are probably quite right that the industry is losing the confidence of readers. We don't get anything like the true news unless we have good research skills and are willing to dig for it. Maybe it is because the media thinks we're too stupid to be able to follow something complex (or they are not good enough writers to report it so we can). Or, maybe it is because five or six transnational corporations own virtually all the news outlets, and those in their executive suites believe their interests best served by an ignorant populace. This has been going on decades. Check out the great Asimov quote below.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that your ignorance is just as good as my knowledge."

Don't knock the Daily News. I'm down here in Tampa and I miss the News. Everytime I go up to NY, one of the first things I do is get some newspapers, and Beer.

Too bad that hack Lupica wasn't "downsized" in the process. Any amount The News pays that character is way too much.

How about firing their editorial staff? They suck! They're just The Post #2. Oops, I guess they just write what the man orders anyway.
