Helena Bonham Carter As Miss Havisham In 'Great Expectations' Film (PHOTOS)

The sweetheart (or miscreant, depending on the flick) of period piece films, Helena Bonham Carter is making a silver-haired return to the silver screen as Miss Havisham in an adaptation of Charles Dickens's "Great Expectations." Previously starring as a deranged witch in the "Harry Potter" series, a faithful matriarch in "The King's Speech," and a cold-hearted Queen of Hearts in “Alice in Wonderland,” the actress seems a perfect fit for the wry, manipulative, wild-haired villain.

Eerie and opulent, Havisham has nothing but her father’s inheritance and her bitterness from being left at the altar to keep her company. She adopts a child, Estella, seemingly for the sole purpose of teaching her to break the hearts of men, including the novel’s protagonist, Pip.

The first photos of Bonham Carter in the role were released today, and sure enough, her wide eyes and silky, rag-doll wedding gown epitomize Dickens's spinster, who, thirty some years after her break-up, still refuses to change clothes.

"In a sense, she's a feast for the eyes," says Elizabeth Karlsen, the producer of the BBC Films and Number 9 Films movie, set to release in 2012.

Directed by Mike Newell, the film began shooting last month. The lead role of Pip will be played by newcomer Jeremy Irvine, who is also starring is Steven Spielberg's film, "War Horse" later this year.

How does ol' Box Head keep getting work outside of her husband's films?
It's too bad, I would like a new film version of this story, but I will not watch this one.

Wow, such a vicious attack. I ask you, why are you so inflamed about my comment? Why such defense of her? Are you her mother? I personally don't think she's a good actress, and her head is quite squared off in my opinion.

This is one woman who can look and come across as incredibly desirable and the next give off the most revolting image on film. She's very talented.

Helena Bonham Carter is perfect for the role of Miss Havisham.

It's hard to believe that this actress played Lucy Honeychurch once upon a time.

Tim Burton movie or not, BY LAW, Helena Bonham Carter has to be in all "period pieces." That's why she maintains that ridiculous hair.

I could certainly see that being the case, nor would I argue to the contrary.

My point was more that HBC seems very typecast to me, in part, because she wears an anachronistic hair do. When you're doing a "period piece," with frilly gowns and poofy hair, HBC is everyone's first call. When you're doing a modern, edgy, action movie, or any story set after 1950, not so much.

Dinosaur is the operative word here.

I'm pretty sure Miss Havisham did not have creamy skin and prefect makeup.

i thought the same thing. the shots look cool, but her face and makeup are too perfect.

One of my favorite books of my youth. Oddly, I was just dreaming of that horror of a wedding cake last night. Very strange.

I look forward to seeing this.

That bottom photo is amazing; it reminds me of Norma Desmond at the end of "Sunset Boulevard" or Mrs. Danvers at the end of "Rebecca".

Cool. One of my favorite reads as a kid in HS. For some reason these are the ones athat mean the most although I have read plent more since the huge novel no one else finished iin class. She has the right amount of weirdo to pull it off without losing the audiences empathy. I wish Burton her boyfriend was director though. All due respect to the guy who got the job. Hiring her was a great idea, it's just no one has that quality of warped dreamy mania only Burton can pull off that will work well for the nightmarish wonder that is unique to Dickens

I'll go out on a limb as one of the few who loved the recent remake of Great Expectations with Hawke, Paltrow, and Bancroft.

It is one of my favorite movies of the past 20 years, and I can't imagine a better performance in film than Anne Bancroft as Havisham/Dinsmore. She was unbelievably amazing.

Granted the film did have trouble with some of the attempts to locate in modern times (the art show especially)
