i-D Cover Features Purple Hair For Winter 2011: Yay Or Nay? (PHOTOS, POLL)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/07/11 11:40 AM ET Updated: 11/07/11 11:40 AM ET

The colored hair trend hasn't lost any steam, with pink-tressed Charlotte Free covering Wonderland, the models on Thakoon's Spring 2012 runway showing off pastel 'dos and celebs like Kate Bosworth going bright.

The latest may be one of our favorites: Anja Rubik appears on one of i-D's four (so far) winter covers, photographed by David Bailey upside down with her mouth agape. But it's not her face but her hair that steals the show, all untamed and purple-streaked.

The subtle, almost gray color reminds us a bit of Lady Gaga or Kristen McMenamy -- but wilder and more i-D-appropriate, of course.

What do you think of purple hair -- does it look good? Would you ever dare to go violet yourself?

See Anja as well as i-D's three other Winter 2011 covers below.

Quick Poll

Purple hair:

Yay!

Nay.

When my daughter was in middle school - around 9th grade, about 14 or so - my hair was dark auburn and hers was a lovely rich shade of chestnut. She was determined to rebel, and one day at a friend's house she dyed her hair red. Unfortunately, she used a shade called "Redwood", which came out the color of a red plum's skin. Amazingly, it clicked with her friends, and she maintained the color for two or three years, by which time, of course, it had lost all of it's rebellious shock value. I'm proud to say I exhibited unwonted wisdom in pretty much ignoring the rebellious aspects of it, deciding that after all, hair will grow out, even purple hair! She continued to experiment a little during college, but since her graduation, she's returned to the lovely chestnut color - which now has completely natural auburn highlights! And because she was careful, her hair was never damaged by the experience. Admiring both her nerve and boldness in making the change, while admitting I'd never wanted purple hair, allowed us to retain our individual dignity and even drew us a bit closer together (at a time when everything else threatened to divide us). Fond memories of purple hair - yay!

The key is finding some creativity without losing every chance of looking natural. I like the model's hair. I went through pretty much every single hair color in high school, and it was a lot of fun. When you're young and don't have a professional job that prohibits this, have fun with it. Even if you strike out a time or two (my hair has been both purple and orange on accident), it's not permanent. I'm so glad my parents let me express myself with my hair in high school. It gave me a safe, creative, non-permanent outlet.

That said, I think unless it's really subtle, abnormal hair colors on middle age or older people is not so flattering.

yeah, this is great, but based on my experience, employers today won't hire you or allow you to do this in a "corporate" environment

I never saw a head of purple, green, blue or fire engine red hair (or any combination of the above) that didn't look just awful. Don't these women look in the mirror?!?

Maybe you personally don't like those colors, but I've had and seen all of them done very well and looking very good. Perhaps you should expand your taste's comfort zone a bit.

I had purple hair 20 years ago in high school.

These people are behind the times!

Exactly. I'm happy to see that the mainstream is interested in unnatural hair colors now though.
