Black Women Have Amazing Confidence, Survey Shows (POLL, PHOTOS)

Blackwomen

Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/09/11 09:00 AM ET Updated: 11/09/11 09:03 AM ET

Last week we loved on our hair, this week we're bringing sexy back.

Allure magazine polled 2,000 men and women from across the country in an attempt to find out "what's beautiful now."
And when African American women were asked about their personal attractiveness, "they were three times as likely as Caucasian women to rate themselves at the 'hot' end of the spectrum."

That may sounds trivial or shallow, but a little self-love goes a long way--especially in the face of those hateful reports that black women are the reason for the falling marriage rates in the African-American community.

Beverly Bond, founder of "Black Girls Rock," is trying to plant the seed of self-confidence early. Her organization helps create, reaffirm and/or reclaim that self-worth in young girls across the country.

"I want our young girls to be inspired to not settle for being less than their best selves," Bond told the Associated Press. "I want them to feel proud of who they are and who they can be and who we have been."

That's definitely something worth rooting for and thanks to this survey it sounds like we're headed in the right direction.

Here are a few more interesting findings from the survey:

  • Seventy-three percent of women say that a curvier body type is more appealing now than it has been in the past ten years. Still, when asked if they wanted to change their hips, 85 percent of women wanted them to be narrower.
  • Thirty-five percent of men and women said that, if there is one part of their bodies they'd like to change the most, it's their stomachs.
  • Eighty-six percent of men said that they wanted to weigh less—as did 97 percent of women.
  • When it comes to sexual attraction, women list their top five favorite male attributes as a guy's face, body type, smile, eyes, and height. And men's answers, in order? Face, body type, breasts, smile, and butt.

Quick Poll

How Would You Rate Your Attractiveness?

I'm HOT!

I'm pretty easy on the eyes.

Let's just say there is a lot a would change about myself.

Not a fan!

So I guess black women are not allowed to be confident based on these remarks.
10:47 PM on 11/14/2011
That's what "others" want Ebony. Black women to be down and underfoot. You know, like we were when we were being forced to work for everybody else, serve everybody else, breastfeed everybody else's children, sex men we didn't want anything to do with. They miss the days of black women being the doormat on which EVERYBODY could wipe their feet.

This makes a lot of sense.

As we all learn, self-confidence comes when you finally stop looking to others for validation. Black women just seem to learn that life lesson a lot faster. People commenting with their own opinions on the supposed "collective hotness" of Black women continue to miss the point. Your opinion does not matter, should not matter, and likely never will.

My theory is that the term "hot" is viewed differently by different women. In general, White women are so plagued by looking like models in magazines that any deviation from that society standard automatically makes them less hot in their eyes. To them hot is a very specific look.Yet you will see a Black women that is short, tall, big or small etc. and to her she is hot because she is happy the way she is and loved by someone who loves her the way she is. That definition of hot has nothing to do with the percent of people that would rate her as such but probably more to do with how well her sex life is going and how she feels overall; its about being in tune with your womanhood and sexuality.

"I see it more with black women...and you’re like, Man, look at you go! Where did you get that? She might be a larger package, but boy, she sure understands how she’s wrapped."--Matthew McConaughey

This is exactly how every woman on earth should feel.

Nothing is more annoying than black women who think they are special for just being black women. If they have DONE nothing to be special then they are just obnoxious , annoying people. This applies to both sexes and all nationalities. But this is an article about black women so don't get all upset and call me a racist.
07:43 PM on 11/14/2011
Really? Nothing? Nothing on the whole planet annoys you more? The issue might not be racism, but that's definitely worth some self-reflection.

Nice survey, but I knew all this already. What I found was a surprise was the answer about wanting narrower hips. Wider hips add to the "figure 8" shape. I'm confused...

this is odd, only 3 pages listed but the comments say over 300 comments and there is no way each page has a 100 comments on it.
i think topic like this are posted deliberately for a certain segment of non blacks and black men to post snarky comments and bad mouth us. its amazing how so many are resentful of the thought that black women may not have drank the kool aid and absorbed the hatred or contempt thrown at us over and over again. all base a poll that doesnt explain those numbers...it could be 3percent white women think they are hot vs 9 % or black women, or 7% white women /21% black women.

...that's EXACTLY what it is...

...i think Blackvoices was acquired so snarky non-blacks can write insulting comments...and in this case, many black men are on the 'hate black women' bandwagon...

...it's sad...
11:16 PM on 11/14/2011
Hey cherie...I bet you that non-blacks and their henchmen black men, have not infiltrated Latinovoices. I haven't checked it out because to be truthful, I'm not interested enough to care about what's going on in their forum. As for black men being on the 'hate black women' bandwagon... truth is, black men are the drivers. Nothing has changed girl. They've been driving Miss Daisy and driving around whitefolks period all their lives, may as well keep driving them around, LOL.

~ I'm wondering if this "confidence" has anything to do with the reason why some Black girls and women tend to be "loud." ~
11:10 PM on 11/13/2011
This "confidence" is really a defense mechanism against rejection.

Correction:

That 'confidence' comes from survival...it's innate and it's not something that can judged by superficial people who think that looks are the defining characteristic in women.

so having confidence in your looks makes you loud? does it make white women who have confidence in their looks loud? or white men? and why would assume that loud black women would rate themselves hot in a web site poll? exactly how do you make the connection? what a sly little way to slide in a very racist stereotype. that would almost be like taking jewish individuals' opinion on their self image and connecting it to a money stereotype.

~ Your response is nothing more than a Straw Man Fallacy - and will be treated as such ~

What I have observed in real life is that black and white women are usually more aggresive and confident, often overflating their value in attractiveness and importance. Asian and Hispanic women, on the other hand, are more modest by nature but usually look a lot better on average.

It's good to know that us men aren't as shallow as media tries to paint us. I am pleasantly surprised that breasts was not the number one attribute that men seek in a woman. Good job fellas! And, I guess that noone wants to be seen out in public with someone with a not-so-pleasant face regardless of how banging their body is as evidenced by face being the number one priority by both genders. And they say Americans are shallow! Haha!
04:17 PM on 11/11/2011
I think we as a people should stop falling for faulty arguments such as this just because it makes a positive judgement on us. First of all, what is confidence? It manifests itself in many ways and takes many forms so to pretend confidence is any one thing is a reification fallacy. The second problem is that less than 2000 women were surveyed out of a country of 300,000,000 and some 15 million blacks. Third problem is the argument really says: black people are confident because they are black. That's a terrible and faulty argument. Anytime you try to racialize something it ends up having bad results. Imagine if this survey were on intelligence and it read: white women were 3 times more liken to declare themselves highly intelligent compared with black women. The conclusion that we are left is white women think they are smarter than black women. Or, white women are more confident in their intelligence than black women. Why? Because they are white and said so. It's bad reasoning.

New poll shows that most women have confidence issues. In other news, most men were likely to rate themselves as "hot" or "damn fine" on a scale of 1 to 10. No word on yet how they filled in the bubbles...
