Mayor Bloomberg Outlines Plan To Balance United States Budget

Mayor Bloomberg

NEW YORK -- Congress' deficit-fighting "supercommittee" must take bold action to balance the budget, and both parties must be willing to compromise to get it done, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday.

"For too long, Washington has operated on the `something for nothing' principle," Bloomberg said in speech in Washington. "Both parties have promised their constituents the world – and given them debt and a sluggish economy and anemic job growth."

Bloomberg, a billionaire entrepreneur, said U.S. business leaders won't invest or hire workers until they know how Washington intends to grapple with the deficit.

"Decision-makers abhor a lack of clarity," he said, according to the prepared text of his speech to the Center for American Progress in Washington.

The so-called supercommittee has until Nov. 23 to recommend legislation that would cut deficits by at least $1.2 trillion over the next decade.

Bloomberg said that sum "would be just scratching the surface of the problem – and yet, as of this moment, it appears the committee is in danger of failing to reach even that low bar as a result of the usual partisan brinkmanship."

The Democrat turned Republican turned independent said both parties have to be willing to give on something.

Bloomberg said Democrats "have to face the reality that we need more spending cuts, including reasonable entitlement reform," while Republicans should allow George W. Bush's tax cuts to expire at the end of 2012.

Easy guy. You couldnt even handle your board of Ed. You think you can handle congress. And real leaders don't change the rules at the end of the game so they can get 4 more years.

If I was the GOP I'd be begging this guy to run for president. He far outclasses the cadre of clowns now vying for the nomination.

Plus, he can win. The aforementioned cadre of clowns? Not so much.

I thought the Mayor was right this morning on Morning Joe and also this speech. Its ridiculous to think that you can have your state, local and federal governments provide all the services that we demand and not want to pay for them.

Its also ridiculous how certain special interests have gamed the system to avoid paying their fair share, and how the govt has refused to cancel duplicate programs, and tax breaks and departments that no longer serve a purpose or whose goals have been met.

How about we Balance Bloomburgs Bank accounts by taking those Billions and giving it to schools, Homeless Shelters. Maybe pay for some Healthcare for our poorer neighbors. Pay for some kids tuitions. Thats just a start.

He is a tyrant spoiled child and I see the fear and lies in his face.

Bloomberg lost all credibility when he tossed aside the NYC citizens mandate on term limits. Twice they voted for term limits and this dispicable man bribed the city council into repealing it. He would have tossed the voting out had he lost that third term. He stayed in office to help the 1% get richer.

I'll balance the budget and pay down the deficit. A flat, (Republicans love flat taxes) excise tax on all Wall St transactions. It's fair to everyone. A simple 9% FLAT excise tax in 2010 would have completely paid the 2010 deficit AND cut the Federal Deficit by 1/2 a Trillion!!!!!

Everyone would benefit and pay the excise tax. It would be going back to the Clinton years of a balanced budget and surplus!!!

This from a mayor who I guess does not care if tourist come to New York or not by letting the protesters rule the park and by letting small business owners loose big time because of the protesters. Can't believe New York would vote this person as mayor.

just maybe our budget has to do with you coming to NYC using our services and looking for a bargain.

The City's budget is balanced and the Zucotti Park people have a right to assemble and voice their opinion.

BTW, you know how the park got its name? This Zucotti guy named it after himself.
