Mississippi In DC: GOP Pushes Zygote Personhood Bills

Personhood Supporters In Mississippi

Mother Jones:

On Tuesday, voters in Mississippi will head to the polls to vote on an amendment to the state Constitution that would designate inseminated human eggs as legal persons from the "moment of fertilization." This would set up a challenge to Roe v. Wade and could lead to outlawing many forms of birth control. But this fight is not merely a Mississippi matter: In Washington, House and Senate Republicans are pushing legislation that would do the exact same thing on the federal level.

Think of the possibilities. Upon discovering you are pregnant, run out and take out a [sizeable] life insurance policy on the zygote.. The rates for a -0.75 year old would probably be quite favourable.

Sadly, the House Repubs will blow great hot air into this sail as they are painfully desperate for a distraction from their continued failure to create jobs, for blocking all financial reform, and for attacking organized labor.

The GOP needs a 'G0D' based distraction and this will be their newest, biggest, unConstitutional shiny distraction.

Republicans are a great example of the poor education in this country. They have a collective one track mind and that is to control women and destroy their status in society. They have no intention of focusing on jobs or anything else for that matter. They are obsessed with power and control, all under the guise of being christian. They have become a dangerous fringe element of society and of America and in 2012 we need to remember that their number 1 goal is anti-abortion, anti-women. Vote only for pro-choice Democrats.

This kind of story makes my jaw drop to the floor - until I remember it stands zero chance of ever making it past the constitutional courts.

Actually, I bet it doesn't even make it to the federal court system... This will get quashed by state of Mississippi courts.

Mandatory monthly pregnancy tests are around the corner. Government out of our lives except for women's health and marriage equality.

Working hard on jobs, as usual. Our legislators must be the laughingstock of the world.

I must be totally dumb but I cannot see a thing where this helps the Country. This party say's it wants to get Government smaller and out of the people business. DO they forget its the people that pay them, do they think they can just barge in and tell you when how a where you have sex or raise a family, that they and they alone can control how people live. You tax legal product and then continue to sale them for the Tax Dollar. I am sorry but your efforts to protect lives is false. What you are saying is yet again women are going to be under a microscope and held totally responsible for any type of pregnancy and some women who desire to have children but cannot in the traditional way cannot choose invirtro. You are telling them they cannot use birth control which is saying if you have sex their might be a conception and they will have to refrain from sex, that pretty well wipes out a happy union. All of you have work that needs to be done NOW In Local, State as well as Federal. And its not controlling people's personal lives. Something needs to be done about our Government in todays world, its divisive and radical.

Actually, this law is a partial step in the right direction. No corporation ever was a zygote and therefore by definition cannot be a person. Let's work on that one, shall we?
