Cervarix, Cervical Cancer Vaccine, May Cut Need For Screening

Cervarix Cervical Cancer

Using GlaxoSmithKline's Cervarix vaccine to protect girls against the HPV virus that causes cervical cancer is so effective that health authorities could reduce the need for later cervical screening, scientists said on Wednesday.

Researchers from Finland and the United States who published two studies in The Lancet Oncology journal found Cervarix "offers excellent protection" against two key strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly when given to young adolescent girls before they become sexually active.

The studies also found the vaccine partially protects against several other cancer-causing HPV types that it is not specifically designed to target, giving protection against a group of strains that together cause about 85 percent of cervical cancer worldwide.

"Provided that organised vaccination programs achieve high coverage in early adolescents before sexual debut, HPV vaccination has the potential to substantially reduce the incidence of cervical cancer, probably allowing the modification of screening programs," said Matti Lehtinen from the University of Tampere in Finland, who worked on the studies.

He said that as a result of the findings health experts in Finland, one of the first countries to introduce nationwide HPV vaccination campaigns in 2007, should consider cutting cervical screening programs down to just a once-in-a-lifetime test at around the age of 25 to 30 to check the vaccine has been fully effective.

"You should not have two measures on top of each other if one is already efficient enough," he said in a telephone interview. "This could certainly mean lots of savings in terms of costs of screening."

GSK's two-strain vaccine targets HPV types 16 and 18 that are responsible for about 70 percent of cervical cancers. Rival drugmaker Merck also makes an HPV vaccine called Gardasil which protects against 16, 18 and two other strains of the virus.

Cancer of the cervix is the second most common cancer in women worldwide, with about 500,000 new cases and 250,000 deaths each year, according to the World Health Organization.

Virtually all cases are linked to genital infection with HPV, the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract.

Several developed nations have in recent years introduced nationwide HPV vaccination programs for girls and young women.

In the United States, for example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently recommends girls and women aged between 11 and 26 should get either Cervarix or Gardasil.

Lehtinen said these vaccinations could eventually cut the need for nationwide cervical smear screens that are usually done every few years in women from around the age of 25 onwards.

The two Lancet Oncology studies both looked at Cervarix.

The first, which included almost 20,000 healthy women aged between 15 and 25 from 14 countries across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and North America, found the shot gave high rates of protection against high-grade cervical precancers, early development of a condition called adenocarcinoma, and 12 other cancer-causing HPV types.

In a second study the vaccine showed increased cross-protection against other cancer-causing HPV types 31, 33, 45, and 51 in different groups of women.

"Our results show that cross-protective efficacy might provide substantial additional protection against cervical cancer," said Cosette Wheeler from the University of New Mexico in the United States, who co-led the second study.

In a commentary about the findings published in the same journal, Mark Schiffman and Sholom Wacholder from the U.S. National Cancer Institute said that increasing coverage, particularly of as yet sexually-naive young girls, "is now the most important public-health issue in HPV vaccination efforts."

The heading of this article is as bogus as many of the ads for this drug, calling it a cervical cancer vaccine, it is not, it is a vaccine to reduce a womans chance of contracting genital warts, which once contracted may lead to one form of cervical cancer. Articles and advertisements should just call it what it is, and perhaps just perhaps women would opt out of having sex with a warted one and that would be the best way to reduce their risks of contracting cervical cancer, caused by genital warts.

It is way too early to be stating that screening tools such as paps can be eliminated! How dare they? Pretty sure one of the lead researchers. Dr. Diane Harper wouldn't be advising this. Funny how these people aligned with the drug companies are mentioning cost savings re. Screening programs, seeing as how expensive The HPV vaccine series is. It seems like they care more about the money than the girls who are being hurt by this vaccine. Odd that they don't seem to care about all the vaccine injured kids with other diseases and vaccines, either. The costs associated with rehabilitation/special education are very high. They don't like to acknowledge that, though. The researchers still have no idea if strand replacement will happen because of this vaccine and more aggressive strains will emerge. I wonder who Dr. Solomon is paid by?

I agree with only one thing you say - that it is premature to cut back the pap smear program just yet.

But nothing can detract from the plainly evident benefits of these vaccines. It's almost like people want the vaccines to fail, so that thousands of women can continue to die each year.

The pap smear is a horribly flawed test that has resulted in women being mutilated by inane doctors who think they know everything. Not to mention that the test is akin to a r8pe for some women. It's disgusting and shouldn't continue.

So you are totally against PAP smears, and also against HPV vaccine.
Why are you so misogynistic?
Do you want thousands of women to die each year from cancer?
04:07 PM on 11/13/2011
I'm pretty sure Dr. Harper was not a lead researcher for Cervarix.

Dr. Harper was lead author on a couple of clinical trials. At the time she was employed by Dartmouth College. She is no longer employed by Dartmouth.

The anti-vaxxer views here are astounding. But if this article was from some woo-spouting celeb D.O. or family practice naturopath giving his personal opinions on some Far Eastern magical fruit (with no clinical studies to support him) they would be lapping it up.

Has it ever occurred to you that some people want to live and die naturally? Where is it written that everyone's goal in life should be to live as long as possible by any means necessary and at any cost? It's none of your business what choices other people make for themselves or their children. None whatsoever.

If you want to risk the side effects of this vaccine, which includes death, then by all means get vaccinated.

You'd rather risk cancer, which affects 12 thousand women each year, and kills 4000 of them?
04:26 PM on 11/13/2011
12,000 in this country; 11,000,000 women world-wide.
05:36 PM on 11/12/2011
Totally agree with you, rikadarling. I have more issue with the gross lack of respect for the sanctity of a woman's body. I'll never understand women who allow themselves to be poked, prodded, violated, cut up and drugged by the pushers of Western so-called medicine.

Yes, the Western medicine drug pushers would rather violate women by giving them a vaccine, than wait for them to have their genitals rot away and have them dying in agony, which is what you seem to be advocating.

Why not visit the CDC's website instead? Or the National Cancer Institute's website.

There you would find factually correct information, not the garbage offered on the sites you mentioned.

People always wonder why we can't cure cancer with all the millions of dollars people are donating. This gives a good explanation on why cancer can't be cured right now.

There IS a CURE for cancer!!! The govt & big cancer drug companies have knows about it since the 70s! When they discovered the cure, they shut down the tests and hoped the public would forget about it...since H.P. keeps erasing my comments containing the sites, look it up for yourself RICK SIMPSON has cured thousands without side effects, without drugs and poison. Cancer is BIG business, why would they want you to know that there is a CURE?

What about the many girls who have been injured by the Cervarix vaccine? My daughter received the Cervarix vaccine last year and is still suffering from a serious adverse reaction to it. She has suffered for more than 12 months from chronic fatigue, persistent headaches, sore throats, muscle aches, joint pain, abdominal pain, new allergies, a facial wart, hair loss, loss of feeling in her limbs, menstrual problems and a decrease in memory and concentration. She has lost a lot of school time and her grades are lower than predicted.
Prior to receiving the vaccine, she was very active, played competitive sports, danced competitively and had endless energy and stamina. 13 months on and she is easily tired is usually suffering from one of the above symptoms is worried about falling behind at school. The vaccine has robbed her of at least one of the most important years of her school life and possibly the potential she once had. As a parent I feel sick when I think that I gave my consent for my healthy, high achieving daughter to be injected with something that has damaged her and left her with an uncertain future. I wouldn't wish any daughter or parent to go through what we've been through this year.
Before holding this vaccine as a wonderdrug, please do some research on the internet and get the full picture. A word of caution - please be aware that the studies referred to in the above article were funded by

Caron,

You might want to try and mitigate the damage thru the use of zeolite, chlorella, milk thistle extract, and a good organic diet along with judicious amounts of pure alkalinized water. Good luck to you and your daughter. What happened is horrific and unforgiveable.

Thanks for the advice, I'm prepared to try any natural remedy. Our experience with this vaccine has now made me deeply suspicious of any manufactured drug. The things I've discovered whilst researching this have been unbelievable, I now have no trust or confidence in any information coming from the drug companies.

Don't bet on it. In a year or so there will be all kinds of nasty side effects showing up and then the lawyers will have a feeding frenzy. Get your checkups girls and stay healthy.

What about the CURE for cancer that has NO side effects and is completely SAFE! Don't believe me? Research it yourself...RICK SIMPSON has discovered the CURE that big drug companies and the govt is ignoring, because they would be out BILLIONS!
