Mark Block, Cain's Chief-Of-Staff, Falsely 'Confirms' Accuser's Son Works For POLITICO [UPDATED]

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/09/11 05:03 AM ET Updated: 11/09/11 01:00 PM ET

Herman Cain's campaign may want to verify facts before confirming anything on television.

Mark Block, Cain's chief-of-staff, spoke to Sean Hannity on Fox News Tuesday, and wrongly claimed that the son of a woman who accused Cain of sexual harassment in the 1990s works at POLITICO.

"At the press conference it was brought up that Karen Kraushaar had come out as one of the women, so we've come to find out that her son works at POLITICO, the organization that originally put this story out," Block said.

When Hannity asked if the information about Kraushaar's "son" was confirmed, Block said: "We've confirmed that he does indeed work at POLITICO and that's his mother, yes."

Josh Kraushaar, the man Block appears to be talking about, denied these claims. On Tuesday, Kraushaar posted numerous messages on his Twitter page that refuted Block's "confirmed" allegations.

Kraushaar acknowledged working at POLITICO from 2007 to 2010, but said he had been at the National Journal for over a year. His Twitter bio lists his current job title as the executive editor of the publication's blog The Hotline. He's also not related to Cain's accuser.

"For a presidential spokesman to go on TV and make up blatant falsehoods doesn't speak well for his boss, either," Kraushaar wrote.

Kraushaar did manage to keep his sense of humor about the whole situation. "The only positive benefit about being smeared by Mark Block on Hannity is I'm getting 100 new Twitter followers a minute."

According to CNN's politicalticker blog, Karen Kraushaar accused Cain of sexual harassment when he led the National Restaurant Association in the late 1990s. She was the second woman to come forward publicly with allegations about the GOP presidential candidate, but only did so after her identity was revealed by the iPad news site, The Daily.

Karen Kraushaar, 55, is a registered Republican who works at the Treasury Department. Through her attorney, she has described the alleged harassment as "a series of inappropriate behaviors and unwanted advances from the CEO," NPR reported. She reportedly received a payout in 1999.

UPDATE:

Cain's campaign admitted its mistake Wednesday in a statement to the Daily Caller.

“Based upon information available at the time of Mr. Block’s Tuesday night interview on Fox News, the campaign was led to believe that Mr. Josh Kraushaar, currently with the National Journal and a former employee of Politico, was the son of Karen Kraushaar,” campaign spokesman J.D. Gordon told the Daily Caller. “We have since learned that is not the case.”

Cain and his campaign staff are running scared. They accused this poor man of being the accuser's son and also had the incorrect information about his employment.

Cain also issued a "veiled" threat against his accusers which demonstrates how scared he really is about the truth coming out. His former staff did confirm that Cain did engage in frequent late night drinking at clubs or lounges with his employees. Did Mrs. Cain just turn a blind eye to his "socializing".

Why does anyone expect Cain's chief-of-staff to be any smarter than the candidate himself?

Messrs. Block and Cain are proving a point I have made several times on these pages. Not everyone can be President. You need to be smart. You must have the ability to recognize talent and surround yourself with talented advisers and subordinates. You must have a reason for doing it, preferably a dedication to public service and not personal ambition. Cain has none of these attributes. And Mark Block is perhaps the most glaring example of the Peter Principle I have ever seen. (In a hierarchy every individual tends to rise to his level of incompetence). While no one was looking, Block jumped about 20 levels of incompetence. He will fall back.

This is what Republicans do. They learned that if you spread enough lies and disinformation, most people will stop believing anyone.

It's an old political trick. Tell the lie that best fits the narrative you want out there for your target audience. Even if you come back later and retract it, the audience has already established a bad association with the entity or person you lied about, and the damage is done. Hurray for swiftboating!

Yes many Americans have puny attention spans and cannot connect a retraction to a earlier fact. The accusation lingers long after the fact has been run over by a retraction, like the wafting stench of a flattened skunk.

It isn't just the short attention spans. Partisanship is especially virulent these days. Republicans will refuse to even look at facts that don't support what they already "know to be true".

I think Democrats are somewhat less so, but not a lot.

In an economy where so many people are hurting, it's natural for people to try to apportion blame to those who are the "other".

Come on!!
So what if the rebuttal, or deflection, is not true?!
If it changes the topic or moves the focus, it's all good!
This is Repugnican politics in 2011.
Who's actually naive enough to find lies, and obfuscation of facts, as acceptable political practices from the Right?

Unfortunately for the country, about 30% of the nation still believes that Republicans are truthful and good. Is that sick or what? That many people still so obstinate or uneducated or just plain foolish that they support these liars, cheats, obstructionists, women abusers, hate-mongers and anti-Middle Class con artists......pretty scary! Good luck trying to get a job with the companies that are paying them off and taking our jobs out of the country faster than they can rape the American people of their hard earned money.

The logic is the person he sexually harassed deserved it because her son worked for Political. The Democratic machine knew Cain would run for president many years into the future so they instigated the other women to accuse him and Cain paid 5 figures to shut them up because it was not true. Can we believe Cain?

Well the false statement was put out there, probably deliberately, to muddy the waters. It is much easier to start a rumor than it is to correct it. This was a tactic to undermine the credibility of Karen K. and make her claims appear to be part of a conspiracy.
