Skid-E-Kids Social Network Violated Privacy Law Says FTC

ATLANTA -- Federal regulators have reached a settlement with an Atlanta-based social networking site over claims that it illegally obtained personal information from children.

The Federal Trade Commission said in court documents filed in Georgia this week that it had reached the settlement with Skid-E-Kids, a social networking site that describes itself as a Facebook for children.

The FTC says the site collected personal information from about 5,600 children without obtaining prior parental consent, violating federal privacy law.

Regulators say the site is targeted at children ages 7-14 and allows them to create a profile, upload pictures and "friend" other members.

Authorities are requiring site operator Jones Godwin to destroy any information he collected from children and comply with federal law or face a $100,000 fine.
