Lars Von Trier: 15 Classic Quotes From The Master Of Bleakness

First Posted: 11/10/2011 6:04 pm   Updated: 01/10/2012 4:12 am

Danish auteurs say the darndest things!

An arthouse favorite since the mid 1980s, the celebrated experimental director Lars von Trier is known primarily for his stunningly bleak and controversial films -- "Dancer in the Dark," "Dogville," "Breaking the Waves," "Antichrist," the recent "Melancholia" (opening in limited release Friday) among them. But along the way he also picked up a reputation as something of an unpredictable interview subject, to say the least.

Not one to shy away from an opinion of himself or the world, Von Trier came under fire at a Cannes Film Festival press conference this year for claiming -- in his typically offhand, sardonic way -- to "understand" and "sympathize" with Adolf Hitler. These statements got him declared a "persona non grata" by Cannes authorities, meaning he is banned from the festival from here on out.

Though he told multiple news outlets he was joking around, he announced in October that he would refrain from giving interviews and press conferences "from this day forth" since he does not possess the skills to express himself "unequivocally."

This would be an unfortunate thing for the world (and his fans). Because for all of the controversy, von Trier remains one of the more entertaining and fascinating interview subjects of all time.

Below, enjoy a collection of some of his phenomenally unpredictable quotes from the last decade:

"I come from a family of communist nudists. I was allowed to do or not do what I liked. My parents were not interested in whether I went to school or got drunk on white wine." - Die Zeit

I think that to take what he says at face value is just stupid. He is a great director and people that don't understand anything of anything feel rightly stupid when they watch him or his movies, and then go around trying to find reasons to hate him.

Master of pretentiousness perhaps.

You left out: "Hitler did some bad things," and "Hitler is not what you'd call a 'good guy'."

The dude is obviously insane, but his contribution to cinema is undeniable (whethet you like his films or not).

LOL. That sounds like one of Trier's non sequiturs.

Yeah, and Ayn Rand's contribution to literature is undeniable too. And Edward Bernays' contribution to public relations is undeniable. And Larry Summer's contribution to our economy is undeniable. And Rick Santorum's contribution to social politics is undeniable. And Glenn Beck's contribution to punditry is undeniable.

Undeniably idiotic.

Garboesque. "I have been smoking cigars ever since I was a small boy." Did Lars have an egg for breakfast? Would he tell anyone if he did? Does he sweater up for those long walks?
No American woman I have ever met could get me to sit eight hours in a muggy theatre to watch a "Kingdom" marathon. After 30 minutes, those bleaching pits start to seem "real."

The Kingdom....

No woman, male or female, could get me to finish that second series, period. Or not.

That being said, The Element of Crime and Melancholia are stunning films.

Never a dull moment with Lars.

Except in the majority of his shock jock cinema.
