Mike McQueary Not Coaching Penn State-Nebraska Game After Receiving 'Multiple Threats'

First Posted: 11/10/11 10:45 PM ET Updated: 11/13/11 10:54 PM ET

After the Penn State Board of Trustees relieved Joe Paterno of his duties as football coach on Wednesday evening, many wondered if wide receivers coach Mike McQueary would also be dismissed.

According to the grand jury report, McQueary witnessed former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually abuse a young boy in a locker room shower in 2002 when he was returning some recruiting tapes as a graduate assistant. McQueary allegedly left the scene without intervening and informed his father of the scene he observed. He informed Paterno the following morning. The coach took the report to athletic director Tim Curley, but no one ever told the police.

Paterno, Curley and Senior Vice President Gary Schultz have already faced repercussions for their involvement in the sexual abuse scandal, but McQueary remains a member of the coaching staff.

On Thursday morning, interim coach Tom Bradley stated that McQueary would be coaching on Saturday against Nebraska, while admitting that he did not know whether the position coach would be on the sideline or in the press box. But later Thursday evening, the university announced on GoPSUSports.com that McQueary would not coach against Nebraska.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Due to multiple threats made against Assistant Coach Mike McQueary, the University has decided it would be in the best interest of all for Assistant Coach McQueary not to be in attendance at Saturday's Nebraska game.

Earlier, the Penn State Board of Trustees asked Bradly to keep McQueary from coaching due to safety concerns.

UPDATE: McQueary has been placed on administrative leave. More here.

"All the judges in Penn State's home county removed themselves from potentially presiding over the child sex-abuse case against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky and will be replaced by outside jurists, the Pennsylvania court system announced Thursday.

The Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts said in a news release that the four Centre County Common Pleas Court judges bowed out "to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest due to real or perceived connections" to Sandusky, the university or the charity for at-risk children Sandusky founded."

This is just not going to cut it. They need to bring in people from OUTSIDE of the RCC.

Her should be fired, just as Paterno was and should have been. He did nothing to intervene when he witnessed a child being abused. Simply because their legal obligation was fulfilled doesn't excuse them. What about their moral obligation, their ethical obligation? This was a 10 year old child.

"Shame on Mike McQueary Shame on Joe Paterno Shame on Penn State athletic department "

It sure does look like the moral abyss goes way, way beyond them. Shame on the police who did NOTHING, the DA who covered it up (and may have been "disappeared" as a result), the judge who recused himself for utterly irrational reasons, the priests and bishops who not only condoned, but protected and PROMOTED the guilty while belittling (and refusing to apologize to, much less recognize) the victims.

sadly to say sexual abuse will be there forever if not in school it will happen in a home sex is a weapon of destruction the only jusitce that anyone would get is that the abused person takes the life of the abuser or we have public execusions we fill everybodies head with texas size egos as if a person tells either they listen and do nothing nor take any action or just say he is the coach minister police officer and say he or she would not do such things or that your parents are outstanding members in the community or he or she is officer in the military look into the facts look how your kids react around pepole and start asking question and let your kids know it is not there fault and that you love them very much everybody needs to get involed in your kids life just becasue a vast majority of us might been kick around the block dosen't mean we have to contiune the vicious cycle my brother was molested in 1974 I told my mother about it me i flat out refused to participate what the older boy wanted me to do my mothre nearly killed the lad no arrest nor charges were filed against her and both my parents were proud of us not only for being brave but for coming forward.

HuffPost Family, we have got to implement/makemandatory in (all) schools in America, that not only physical abuse but sex abuse to any child will not be tolerated, thats from the Chancellor/Principle/teacher/coach/janitor ect..... "enough is enough" because as you can see it's still happening today. This baby had no one to come to his defense & it's pitiful that this was hushed up by all involved. They cannot give excuses here, the only thing that this school can do now is, Apologize & give each one of the Plaintiffs Pain & Suffering monies because all of them(the abused) will need some help. Really, the only thing the schools lawyers & the Plaintiffs lawyers should be doing now is coming to some sort of Pain & Suffering talks for each victim. This is talked about all over America, in stores & on every channel & people are outraged & angered at this whole ordeal that went on for so long, who is gonna watch the adults & do we need cameras in every area of our schools today. You figure!!!!!!

I'm not so sure I wouldn't have threatened him also. To allegedly witness a child being abused (raped) and not take action to stop it may not yet be criminal (though it should be) but, it is a reprehensible cowardly act of an immoral unfeeling human being. And, to hold this information and allow the continued molestation of children for nearly a decade should legally hold him culpable as an accessory after the fact for any child molested after what he allegedly witnessed in 2002.

McQueary needs to be fired immediately. It serves this school right to lose their game on Sat. Although we cannot blame the individual players on the team, we certainly can blame anyone and everyone who knew what was taking place but did nothing! Even if these so called "great" coaches were responsible for the team's wins, the slate has got to wiped squeaky clean. And every other institution that has the same scandal brewing just below the surface needs to do likewise. The Deification of sports in this country is sheer madness. Hail to dollars, that's all that this is about.

McQueary released an email which claims he did contact police, so whatever happened between then and now appears to have been a failure by the police, or the DA (who disappeared). This is not a defense of McQueary, but if true, it does appear to shift the blame a bit. The other two who were fired also claim to have proof that they also contacted the authorities. With police failing to reply and DA's disappearing, this might go straight to the Pope who's become infamous in his support of sexually abusing young boys.

While those men did not perpetrate the acts, they enabled them. They are supposed to be LEADERS, but definitely did NOT demonstrate leadership qualities.

Plot thickens. Wendell Courtney.Counsel for PS in '98 reviewed a case brought by victims mother accusing JS having showers with him JS was paid half million $$$ in consulting fees btw 1998 - 2002, WC by the way is the CEO of Second mile, so JS had massive capit$l to flurt mat'l wealth to inter-city, under priveledged and vunerable kids.
Where was the NCAA during 13 yrs. They are very quite about this "sporting" matter that happens to be collegiate football.I think this org was a player in the grand cover-up which is unralling by the day 1 week after JS' arrest.

Ed, many heads will and SHOULD roll for what this guy did over DECADES with the knowledge of so many. Paterno and PSU president being fired is at best a token symbolic gesture from the quivering and cowardly wheeler/dealers who actually run the school (rich "supporters", fat cat alumni, political hacks, corporate donors, corrupt administrators doing whatever necessary to guarantee their HUGE retirement parachutes don't get deflated). It's a nice start, but this cleaning house has MANY more rooms to go.

There is NO way that only these few KNEW what was going on. And then when even PARENTS filed complaints NOTHING was done but take his towel priveleges away? I can't even wrap my brain around the audacity of such callous brutality.

These were CHILDREN!!!

And children who for the most part came from already dysfunctional, deprived and distressed families who already were barely hanging on to their survival.

If nothing else, ripping the oozing scab off of this festering sore will send (I hope) shock waves through the whole collegiate sports complex. PSU is NOT the only school with such outrageous and savage scandals being covered up right NOW! But something tells me they'll just cover up their dirty "towels" a bit more carefully now.

In a way the Penn State disgrace reminds me of the Toyota recall debacle; the top managers knew of the problems yet continued on like nothing was wrong, then once things blew up rather than own up to their failures, they tried to spin everything in their favor when all the while more innocents were being victimized. If both entities had dealt with things properly from the beginning then made an announcement as soon as possible, the damage would have been minimal and they would be past it by now. As it is in Penn's case, their football program, the very thing they were trying to protect, is irreparably damaged and will never be the same.

The school is making it policy to report any type of abuse within 48 hours. This is yet another FAIL - so watch someone get raped, go home ..eat cheerios, watch a movie, take a nap..what the hell is wrong with this school?? How about go over and clock the rapist between the ballsack and then call the police.

At the risk of being mobbed I'm going to play devil's advocate here. I would like to ask anyone what would they really do if they came upon a trusted colleague doing something so heinous and unspeakable, and unimaginable? What would you really do? Would you destroy decades of work? People are calling for dismantling Penn States entire football program. At what point does the twisted mores of one man make everyone culpable? I recognize the concept of complicity but, I mean come on, really? You want to punish everyone as if they committed the actual rape?

What would you do if you caught your father committing rape?
02:04 PM on 11/13/2011
Seriously? Father, friend, work colleage...it doesn't matter, I'd do all within my power to stop the crime as it was being committed using violent means if necessary, but I am trained (martial arts) to do so. At the very least any and every citizen has a responsibility to IMMEDIATELY call the police and in this case I'd think, scream at the rapist to stop. You would have to be the Devil or his advocate to stand by and do nothing.

My father would be in jail so fast he wouldn't know what hit him. Yes if they saw what they saw then they should be punished if they didn't say anything.I would not be the one who destroyed decades of work. The colleague who was doing the rape of a boy or girl destroyed everything.

Good Morning HuffPost Family, If you have read any of my post on this matter then you know that I am angered at how this was handled. HuffPost family In today's local paper here in Illinois, the head article reads Who's at fault at PennState. And I say to that (All) involved, why? this was a cover up to save what a College thought their (Image) would look like if this horrible crime got out, now I wonder what the college thinks now, because whats done in the dark will surely come to the light, no doubt about it. If Penn State had of come out about this & handled the matter with (Authorities) at hand, then the people would have said, Penn State did do the proper & right thing & they would have been admired for stepping up & saving children & not looking to save an Image, but now the thing they did not want has crept up on them, why? because they hid this awful truth & it's the truth that sets anyone free. The question here is when are we really gonna stand for truth!!!! Nobody helped that baby who was being sodomized by that Monster, they knew & covered up.

From the beginning of this we were fed bits and pieces of this story in an obvious attempt at damage control. At first Mr. Paterno was offered up. He was big enough and well known enough to make an acceptable scapegoat. The public cries of outrage should have been enough to shelter the real demons. Sorry boys, didn't work!
Now more and BIGGER horrors come to light and the blame will walk uphill to the ivory towers of the rich and powerful alumni contributors and Penn State administrators at whose feet the real blame should lie, those 'men' who have made attempts to cover this up since April when Sandusky was given a slap on the wrist and a deal to prevent exposing how deep the corruption goes.
Who WERE the rich Alums to whom Sandusky pimped little boys? Who Are the administrators who benifitted and participated? Obviously Judge Duchcot was complicit and needs to be disbarred.
Root out ALL the hounds of hell in this cess-pool . As for Mr Paterno, his position had such a large political aspect that his reporting it to his superior though insufficient, was understandable. And, after all, Joe was the only one who did ANYTHING. I felt from the beginning that Paterno was a scapegoat. Now I see he was HANDED_UP ! as a scapegoat in the hopes of keeping this from going farther. I bet he wishes now he had done all he could to protect those helpless ones.
09:41 AM on 11/13/2011
Joe had the power to stop this. He was Penn's draw and a very powerful man. I lay the blame on everyone, but he had so much power he could have done something more. The only reason they shoved him under the bus was he was getting ready to retire. The only way for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

Hope this brands PennState with a stench for eternity. After the Tiger Woods scandal, it is near impossible for me to buy any Nike brand product. The brand association with Woods is impossible to forget. Maybe that will be the fate of this University too. They deserve to lose their football profits (back from 1998) to those victims. And forever have their brand name tarnished. Same holds for "JoePa" and McQueary. Aiding and abetting carries the same stench.

At present, he allegedly raped a 10 year old boy in a shower - and by our laws, is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

However, if and when he is found guilty, I would be the first to cheer his finding himself in a prison cell with a 6'6" 300 pound cellmate named "Bubba" who could introduce him to the pain of being repeatedly raped.

Presumption of innocence only applies in a judicial setting. People have a First Amendment right to believe he's guilty, don't you think?
