Occupy Wall Street Growth Map: How Fast Are 'Occupy' Facebook Pages Growing?

The Huffington Post   Jake Bialer   First Posted: 11/10/11 10:55 AM ET   Updated: 11/12/11 01:43 PM ET

From the initial call to occupy Wall Street until the present day, the 'Occupy' movement has grown across the country and spread around the world. Using data from Collective Disorder on different 'Occupy' cities' Facebook pages, The Huffington Post has created a map that shows the movement's increasing popularity over time.

Click the play button on the map to view the movement's growth from October 3 through November 9. Please be patient while the map loads!

NOTES ON THE MAP:
The data for this map comes from developer Shane Castlen and the Facebook API. Castlen has been tracking the total number of likes on Facebook pages per day on CollectiveDisorder.com. The data is available from October 3, 2011, so the map does not include prior growth. The first Occupy Wall Street protest occurred on September 17, 2011, in New York City. The Huffington Post was unable to obtain older data on the pages.

The larger the circle size on the map, the greater the number of Facebook likes. The group sizes are plotted on a log scale to illustrate the changes in pages' sizes more clearly. However, this also decreases the apparent differences in size between the largest and smallest pages.

New groups have formed and been discovered since October 3, when page data was first collected. These pages were added to the original data at a later date, which is why some dots pop up in the middle of the animation.

OWS will fail unless they vote in coming elections. The Tea Party showed its power in the 2010 elections.

Too many people and too few jobs. We have a food crisis, an oil crisis, an energy crisis, a water crisis, a financial crisis and a jobs crisis. Every problem is made harder to solve with the worlds ever growing population.

The world added a billion people in the last 12 years and will add another billion in the next 12 years. Where will all the jobs come from to support this massive population? This is not sustainable.

Reality is that no matter what people say, the government, that is the representation of the people, it'll do what it pleases, so I guess democracy is out the window.

Just goes to show we have misfits all over the nation. Tent sales are up. Pooper scoopers are up. And drums are up. Weed sales are up. Pepper spray and stun gun sales are up. The Occupiers are causing a renewed economy. O, and yes tear gas sales are through the roof.

Our biggest problem is unsecured credit. Our society needs to learn how to stand alone before going mindlessly into financial ventures. True, the serious money is always there for the swift but like fruit the tree does get empty if you strip it.
There was never a money tree just the desire for one. Wouldn't it be nice if we all had a money tree? The credit system tells us we deserve one and convinces us with richly acted and designed adverts on our ADDICTION. Keep watching and you can always drag out your gold card. Wakey Wakey!

As long as Americans continue put their saving and hard earned money into stock market, Wall Street will continue to drain their pockets.. Oh surprise they have already drained our pockets. Solution: Quit putting money in the stock market. Quit putting your money in the banks. Quit keeping your savings (if you have any left) in the banks for them to make money off of you while at the same time they pay you less than a half percent in interest and then charge you outrageous interest on your morgages and loans. Why would you think that our government is going to regulate banks when the banks pay the people at the top of government to look the other way while they steal your money. Wake UP America!

Some people say that there isn't enough going on in Texas because nobody there cares. Is that true? I know Texas is George Bush's safe ground where he's a hero to most people (for some reason). He can't even go to some countries because he'll be arrested and charged with international crimes! You don't hear that stuff on the mainstream media in this country. Maybe some stereotypes, like some about Texas, are true.

Rural Texas is pretty bleak, but in major metropolitan areas there are way fewer low information votors.

I hear there is a little going on, which could be considered enough--it's something anyway. I'm sure it will catch on in more places throughout the world in some constructive way eventually.

Glad you like it. I intend to switch my party affiliation when the time comes because I don't see the current congress being to thrilled about this as it steps on too many toes and upsets too many apple carts.

I know for certain the Republicancer is going to HATE this with a passion. The democrats will have people on all different sides of this but I feel that many of them are going to make the jump over to the new party.

Go and join the "Occupy Wall Street" to find out For Whom the Bell Tolls. Could it be for the ouster of the Republican Congress and Burial of the Tea Party of the Devils or the beginning of the rich to pay Tax and or the victory of the Master of All Source of Power the PUBLIC the middle class and poor?

for the rich to run the gov, they need the help of corrupt politicians. elect anyone and they will be bought via the donor and lobbying system. until we have publically finances campaigns, the system is vulnerable to take over via bribery. redirecting policy toward personal enrichment of gangsters, at the expense of festering problems. http://www.opensecrets.org/
