The Lake And Stars: Mother Models Lingerie With Her Teen Daughter

The Huffington Post     Posted: 11/11/11 07:13 PM ET

Below are The Lake And Stars' latest campaign images, featuring a mother and her 19-year-old daughter embracing in revealing lingerie.

Sexy? Beautiful? Extremely awkward? We just can't decide.

Then again, that's exactly what Nikki Dekker and Maayan Zilberman, co-owners of the New York-based lingerie and swimwear label, are aiming for. They have us talking about it and have you reading about it, looking at it, and possibly walking into their new store because of it.

"A lot of the themes that we're dealing with are about psychology between women as they're growing up and dealing with family politics or women in the workplace," Zilberman told The Huffington Post. "We always poke fun at these ideas that people take really seriously, but we're trying to make it so that people can talk about it and have a sense of humor about it."

The mother and daughter pictured in the campaign are not models by trade, Zilberman said. They are just her next-door neighbors in Brooklyn, everyday women, who seem to have an interesting relationship. "They're always so loving and tender towards each other," Zilberman said.

"That's what really drives the collection and what drives the photos: these women who are experiencing something that we're not necessarily experiencing. I wanted to present portraits of them so that people would see the chemistry that they have. I think it's really rare, you don't see a lot of that."

No, we certainly don't see mother-daughter duos embracing in sheer underthings. Scantily clad women is nothing new in fashion advertisements, but there is something extremely unconventional about the way The Lake And Stars had the mother-daughter pair pose so provocatively.

"There's no shock value here. We're not trying to make people feel uncomfortable in order to provoke dialogue," Zilberman said. "We're just trying to confront some of these issues that I think people aren't really talking about so much."

Zilberman, who is in her early 30s, said that the goal of the campaign is to spark discussion about how younger generations of women relate to older generations of women, and vice versa.

"So for our customer, for our viewer to see these photographs, you're confronted with this feeling of 'who's the sexy one?' Because there's always someone who's sexier and there's always some kind of competition going on; there's always a tenderness going on; there's always a tension," she said.

"We're opening it up to think about: Is it OK for a mother and daughter to feel tender toward each other? And what happens when they're in sexy clothing?"

Taking a look at some of The Lake And Stars' latest campaign images below, have they gone too far? Or is this a creative way to start an important conversation?

http://partialobjects.com/2011/11/is-this-mother-daughter-lingerie-ad-too-sexy-too-gay/

"In Victoria’s Secret lingerie ads, the sex is obvious, but what’s missing? There are no men. So the ad viewer is the “man.” The models are “speaking” to the men. (Women would see it as “this is what a man likes.”)

In this ad, there aren’t two women, there is a mother and daughter, explicitly. So what’s missing? Dad. So you’re not the man, you’re the Dad.

What is Dad seeing? He’s seeing his worst fears playing out. His mortality and uselessness..."

Hi My mother helps me dress when I need to wear my nation's national costume, I'm wearing aproximately as much as those two when we start. Do you consider that inappropriate too?

This was just a photo shoot not a sneek peek into their incestous lives so stop freaking out.

To answer the question, "Who's the sexy one?", the answer is, "neither."

First off, as a gentleman of a certain age, I find the mother attractive. I have grands near the age of the daughter. I am certain that there are those who would find the pics disturbing in a certain manner. tsk tsk get your mind out of the sewer.

1. it's art morons...lets see some photo's posted by the negative commenters below.
2. as per the comments below...obese americans are offended by those not 50+lbs overweight and would rather put down someone who is in shape and is beautiful than ordering one less big mac.
3.while I knew the mother many years ago, I remember her as a sweet soul and always fun to be around. I've never met her daughter but I've got to say, she reminds me alot of a young Julianne Moore.
4.I love the photo shoot, they possess a dense energy, darkly beautiful.

1. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Not everyone sees this as art.
2. 30 lbs under weight is not healthy. it's gross and this is why so many young women have eating disorders. Size 6 used to be the standard size for models not 0.
3. The daughter does not look anything like Julianne Moore. The only thing they have in common is their hair color.
4. Again, that's your opinion maybe you shouldn't chastise those who think differently.
04:38 PM on 11/15/2011
1. Certainly, but you have to always have a open mind and not ridicule..
2. Everybody is different, some people digest faster, some slower, it's not gross if it's simply the way their built, don't discriminate and judge and you can't blame other peoples eating disorders on the next skinny girl you see (the majority of them are born skinny)
4. I think it's hilarious that you say that, since you insisted the daughter looks nothing like Julianne Moore.. isn't he entitled to his opinion on that! And he isn't chastising people, this whole article is chastising the photo shoot!? so can't he defend it!
I agree with him, I think it's beautiful, cause I don't see it in a sexual light, it's merely a mother and daughter being close, which is beautiful, real and honest, they happen to be wearing their underwear, it shows they are not shy to one another and the lingerie is sexy cause they are both comfortable and confident in their sexuality, which has nothing to do with their emotional intimacy.

the photographer could've done better with the models (mother/daughter), they're beautiful women, but the photograph campaign is very mediocre.

Yes, he or she could have done better. Instead, it has the hackneyed look of a mid-budget torture-porn flick, with the mom/daughter modeling crew having just walked off the set of "American Horror Story."

As for the statement that "they're beautiful women," well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

CHICKEN BONES and the WORD "sexy" do not go together. If you think these two women are skinny in this pictures, just IMAGINE what they look like in PERSON, since adds at least 10 pounds to your photograph......

Loving and tender- yes. But loving and tender and sitting in each other’s laps in garter belts? Is that something most 19 year old girls do or have even fathomed doing? But once again this is the kicker of the campaign and its allure that it presents a particular dichotomy about how we as society view certain relationships, in this case mother and daughter and thus cleverly extends its branding as we the consumer take the extra second to consider what it is what we are witnessing and how or why it intrigues and yet as in this case perhaps repulses us…

I think it's interesting how you ridicule them so harshly, I'm confident that you wouldn't if you felt superior to them, than you wouldn't feel the need, than you'd show them sympathy and show them "mercy" so to speak. So you clearly feel intimidated by them in some way.
