Obama Deportation Policy

The New York Times:

A new Obama administration policy to avoid deportations of illegal immigrants who are not criminals has been applied very unevenly across the country and has led to vast confusion both in immigrant communities and among agents charged with carrying it out.

Since the nation's ability to deport illegal immigrants is limited, it's Obama administration policy to put top priority on deporting aliens who have committed felonies. However, ICE is removing nearly 400,000 foreigners per year for the past three years. At this rate, ICE obviosly runs short of illegal immigrants with criminal records to deport. How many felons could there be in a illegal immigrant population estimated at about 12 million? About 3% of U.S. adults are under correctional supervision (probation, parole, jail, or prison) in 2009. Three percent of 12 million illegal immigrants equals 360,000. Even if you factor in the assumption that illegal immigrants are more likley to be felons than the general population, you still don't get enough felons to to occupy ICE fulltime. Besides, it's a immigration agency, not a police force. Should we expect ICE to stop enforcing immigratrion laws once its runs out of felons to deport?

You are right ~ at some point The DREAMers will be next on BHO's deportation list

Just a matter, of a "short" time, before ALL 11.2 million illegals, are gone

Just say "No!" But to What?

Obama is in a pickle.
80% of Americans want illegal foreigners to leave so he has to please them by appearing to deport as many as possible.
On the other hand, there are 50 million Latinos in America who say that if he doesn't stop deportations and declare amnesty they won't reelect him president. (Never mind that only 10 million of them are actual citizens and voters and nearly 4 million went for McCain in 2008.)
So who does he please?
The millions of unregistered foreign nationals who elected him president in 2008 who are depending on him to defend their civil rights?
Or does he concede to those 100 million hateful, whiny Americans who think he has forgotten which nation he is president of?
Here's how to do it! Fudge the numbers to tell citizens deportations are up and foreigners that deportations are really down.
Brilliant! At least until someone uses Bablefish to translate his speech back into English.
06:23 AM on 11/14/2011
I have a hard time believing there are 40 million people in this country illegally, and an even tougher time believing all of them are Latino. The numbers tossed around a lot are ten to twelve million, so do tell where you got 40 million from.

The problem is easy to fix. People whine about what the produce prices will be if the illegals are all kicked out. Well, here's the fix. ANY illegal caught in the US is given one year of incarceration and made to work at a produce farm during that year. The farmer then pays the worker's wage back to the State for incarceration costs. After one year the illegal is deported. Second offense? 5 years incarceration. Third offense? 10 years. I assure you...the illegals will stop coming. In addition, ANYONE that knowingly hires an illegal will be right there working the produce fields with them. Then we can put huge signs up at the border BEGGING for illegals to come to the US so we can arrest them and make them work the fields. I don't know if illegal immigration will stop but things will surely slow down.

Actually, increasing wages for farm workers would have little impact on grocercy prices. Most of the cost of the groceries you buy at the supermarket reflect processing, packaging, shipping and marketing costs. The United States has about 800,000 farm workers and more than 2.5 million grocery store employees.
11:23 AM on 11/14/2011
The comment was made to appease the "produce will skyrocket without illegals" crowd. The main point was to provide relatively free State incarceration for illegals, solve any produce problems (even though 10 years from now all our produce will be imported), create a deterent for future illegal immigrants and solve the problem with current illegals residing in the US. In addition to dealing with employers that hire illegals. The next step would be to issue an official date that illegals would be required to leave the US. Any illegals found after that date would be arrested and ALL their possessions would be confiscated and sold at auction to pay for them to be deported. No possessions...and it's incarceration working at the produce farm for a year. Problem solved. Instead, we'll just let the US financially implode until it has the same standard of living as every other Central and South American country.

If deportations were handled the proper way, none of this would be an issue.
12:13 PM on 11/13/2011
Sowing confusion, through random enforcement, is almost as effective as consistent, relentless enforcement, so sounds good to me.

It would be kinder to state clearly that there will never be another amnesty and everyone should begin to get their affairs in order for an orderly migration back to their home countries.

This way Democrats can tell their African American voters how many illegals Obama has deported, while at the same time tell Hispanic voters how much Obama is doing to keep them from being deported.
12:38 PM on 11/13/2011
I've been looking for the logic and this is as good -- and Machiavellian -- an explanation as I've heard.
11:42 AM on 11/13/2011
Although I think the employers should be procusted for hiring illegals, there lies a problem. Alot of the illegals carry false (ID theft) identification, therefore when a background check is done, it cames back clean. Also, I do not understand how people can blame this on Obama, or any other president. Although there are policies in place, the president cannot forsee what local departments are going to do.
One other statement I would like to make. It is a little of topic, but not by much. People are crying about the Dems wanting the "illegal" vote, but again, unless there is ID fraud, an illegal cannot vote. The GOP are wanting to enforce voter ID cards to keep illegals from voting. What surprises me on this aspect, is that the GOP won a lot of seats, both local and federal, but now they are crying about a voter ID card. Just isn't making sense in my book.

It would be in our countries best interest that every American be issued a free ID of the best possable quality so as to avoid all fraud not just voting fraud. That piece of paper we call a Social Security card is next to worthless.

It was never intended to be a form of ID, and is not supposed to be used as such.

I agree with SS being next to worthless. Yesterday there was an article regarding parents stealing their minor children's SS number and racking up huge debets. Then when the kids hit adult age and try to buy something, they find out their credit is shot to chit.

President Obama's policies in the area of human rights in general confuse me. For example - send a representative to sign the CRPD, but then don't ratify it? Then there is the immigration issue, as well as other human rights-related issues that leave me going, 'huh?'

Everybody says prosecute the employers, but fail to understand that most illegals have paperwork that passes background checks required for employment.Do you really expect employers to tell hispanic's our policy is not to hire people who look like you.

Employers can't legally say or do that, so no. Just as law enforcement should not be asking Hispanics for paperwork specifically and only because they are Hispanic. The two situations are NO different from one another.

However, there are tens and tens of thousands of cases where, had employers truly done due diligence on the topic, they would have found something wrong. Those are the situations where employers should be held 100 percent accountable.

"ineligible" to vote in U.S. Federal Elections

"can't" vote? Entirely a different fact

Case in Point ~

"In Alaska, Mora-Lopez used Rafael Espinoza's name, Social Security number and date of birth to apply for a state driver's license, according to authorities. Besides receiving permanent fund dividends, Mora-Lopez also used the false identity to vote in national and local elections, according to the federal court papers."

Technically no, they can't vote, but then again, they shouldn't be driving or working in most states either, but they know how to "work" the system! It's much easier to register to vote than it is to register a car.

The headline on the front page reads "Obama Deportation Policy Leads to Confusion."

That is spin. A,n,t,i-Obama spin. Anyone glancing over the front page headlines gets a negative impression of Obama.

The article heading reads, "Uneven Use Of Deportation Policy Leads To Confusion."

The NY Times heading reads, "Deportations Under New U.S. Policy Are Inconsistent."

Significant difference.

They've been doing it consistently for about a year now. Quite a few longtime regulars have noticed the change.

This does not necessarily imply a neocon takeover; it could be something entirely different -- such as backing a different candidate for a primary challenge.

Agreed ~

BHO Adm should be incarcerating Unscrupulous U.S. Employers in Federal Felony violation of U.S.C. 8 § 1324a : US Code - Section 1324A: Unlawful employment of aliens

At the same rate as BHO Adm is setting record-breaking deportations of illegals

It's only the fair thing to do

If the love of my life was moving to another country I would go with him. Some people act like this is the only country in the world where people live and enjoy life. I love New Zealand, but they have standards and requirements that I must meet in order to live there. Maybe one day, I'll make the leap, but I'll do it legally.

You hit on interesting issue. In NZ, or AU, or Canada (i.e. the places in addition to the US that people actually want to live) you can sponsor yourself. Not really so in the US. In the US you have to arrange a marriage to a first cousin who's already here, find an employer and work as an indentured servant for a few years, or apply for asylum. We really do not have any workable forms of self sponsorship.
