USS Carl Vinson Hosts UNC, Michigan State And President Obama In Carrier Classic

By BERNIE WILSON   11/11/11 11:47 PM ET   AP

CORONADO, Calif. -- The Michigan State Spartans couldn't feel too bad about losing 67-55 to No. 1 North Carolina in the Carrier Classic on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson.

After all, President Barack Obama sat at midcourt as the teams played the first college hoops game on an active flat top.

The Veterans Day game was conceived by Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis as a salute to the military. Most of the 8,111 fans were active-duty military.

"It's a loss but at the end of the day it's a win because of what we did," Draymond Green said after pulling down a career-high 18 rebounds for the Spartans.

Playing in front of Obama "was phenomenal," Green added. "It's not every day anyone gets to do that, so that was great. We appreciate the opportunity to show our support and our thanks to the troops for what they do for us every single day."

Harrison Barnes scored 17 points and John Henson had 12 points and a career-high nine blocked shots as the Tar Heels put their size advantage to good use.

Obama watched intently, chatted with wife Michelle and service members seated near him, and at one point appeared to check his BlackBerry. When the game ended, he applauded and then shook hands with coaches Roy Williams and Tom Izzo.

The Carl Vinson conducted Osama bin Laden's burial at sea after he was killed by Navy SEALs in a raid ordered by Obama.

Fitting with the Veterans Day theme, the Tar Heels and Spartans had USA rather than their names on the back of their jerseys, which had a camouflage design. At dusk, the game was paused for the lowering of the American flag. When the game ended, the players gave their jerseys to servicemen.

In a nod to the troops, Williams and his staff wore combat boots and cargo pants.

The Carrier Classic featured slam dunks and fast breaks on a court plopped down where jet fighters normally scream into flight.

North Carolina led by double digits from late in the first half on, including 36-25 after Kendall Marshall made two free throws with 44.8 seconds left before halftime.

This game turned out as have recent matchups between the schools. North Carolina has beaten Michigan State six straight times, including in the 2009 national championship game.

The Tar Heels' biggest lead was 59-38 with 10:42 left before Michigan State closed within 10 points with 5:43 left.

Dexter Strickland had 10 points for North Carolina.

Green scored 13 points and had an unbelievable game on the boards, including 11 defensive rebounds. Michigan State outrebounded the Tar Heels 49-34 but made only 2 of 20 3-pointers.

"One of the things we talked about was getting back to our roots," Green said. "To outrebound one of the biggest, best front courts in the nation by 15, that's phenomenal. If we attack the boards like that every single game, we're going to win a lot of games."

Branden Dawson and Adreian Payne scored 10 points each for the Spartans.

Green said it was great getting to play in front of the president.

"That was phenomenal," he said. "It's not every day anyone gets to do that."

Therein lay the major difference between college and professional basketball. The NCAA was honoring those who have served our country; the NBA is merely self-serving.

Dear Mr President,

Can you please stop taking vacations and playing around and maybe start trying to fix our country?
05:16 PM on 11/12/2011
He spent Memorial Day dropping a wreath in Illinois and then golfing. Now that it's time for re-election, he decides to find time for Veterans with a "full day of events". Even still, there are better ways to show that appreciation and respect then attending a BB game - even if it's on a CV. Perhaps visiting wounded warriors in The Naval Hospital in Balboa would have been a whole lot more appropriate. But not as much fun as a college BB game...

This is nothing more then campaigning and looking for PR time while using this special day for his own selfish self interests. Shameful.

Admit it, you just hate the man and there's nothing  he does that will change your mind.

If he went to a veterans' hospital, then it wouldn't be ENOUGH veterans' hospitals, or spend enough time in them, or say the right things, or talk to the right people while there...He isn't going to meet your expectations, so just stop worrying yourself about it and find somebody else to despise.

Pfffffft.

Interesting that Reuters chose to mute Hail to the Chief, as the President and his wife were first introduced. Very interesting.

Obama is going to have to do more than posture and preen in front of the cameras on an aircrart carrier, in order to win the vote of the troops...They still remember how he and his cohorts in the Democrat Party tried every way possible to exclude the absentee ballots of military personnel last election. The Troops DO NOT trust him, and rightfully so. Don't forget, he is the one who suggested the military families pay for their health insurance, until he realized what he was saying....

Marist has been a legit NCAA tournament caliber program and 20-plus game winner for 20 years. Go buy a clue.

State has no size and no depth this year. Hopefully coach Izzo will win enough to get to the tourney because once he's there his teams tend to perform.

You can build depth over the course of the season. They won't win it all, but they could spoil some seasons.

So how much did this stunt cost the taxpayers in money we don't have? It was Veteran's Day and tens of thousands of recent Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are homeless and that's not counting those from other conflcts/wars.

http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2011/11/11/366801/homeless-veterans-by-the-numbers/.

The Park Service is so underfunded our National Parks are at risk but the military has money to blow hosting college basketball on aircraft carriers and Obama flies out all the way out to San Diego on AF 1 to shake hands and grandstand. Oh come on - how about setting an example?

I was so hoping to make it more than one opinion before someone poopooed all over this. When I served I would have loved to have attended an event like this on Veteran's Day. That said, I appreciate your concern for homeless veterans.

Thank you for your service.
09:25 AM on 11/12/2011
It was an NCAA game so I am quite sure that they footed most, if not all, of the bill.

President Obama was on his way to Hawaii and then on to Asia anyway...it's not like San Diego was an out of the way stop. Being present at a Veteran's Day event aboard an aircraft carrier with active-duty military personnel is "grandstanding"???

As for the general anti-Obama tone of your post...would you approve of anything this President does?
09:48 AM on 11/12/2011
I campaigned for him in both the primaries and the general election but I am sorely disappoionted in his capitulation and failure to reign in exhorbitant military spending, bases, occupations, private security firms, GITMO and wars. Schools on military bases are falling apart and vets go homeless but the good times keep going for the MIC contractors.
