Conrad Murray Given Alcohol, Tailored Suit and Van By Film Crew: Louis Perry

Conrad Murray

By ANTHONY McCARTNEY   11/11/11 07:28 PM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES -- The doctor convicted of causing Michael Jackson's death was given perks by producers of a documentary on his case, a security guard who drove the physician to-and-from court daily said Friday.

Louis Perry, head of Kadima Security Services, said producers often took Murray to booze-filled dinners at upscale restaurants, paid for a 12-seat van outfitted with cameras and may have paid for the tailored suit Murray wore on Monday when he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

Perry said he was never paid for his work as Murray's driver and security detail, but the physician gave him permission to talk to reporters about what he saw.

"They paid to have full access," Perry said. "They were shadowing his every move."

It remains unclear whether the perks Murray received run afoul of regulations intended to prevent convicts from profiting from their crime.

Perry said he didn't comply with a request to allow Murray to be filmed right before Monday's verdict was read, and refused to grant the filmmakers the right to use his likeness in the documentary titled "Michael Jackson and the Doctor: A Fatal Friendship." The documentary has aired in England and will premiere Friday night in the United States on MSNBC.

Perry said he couldn't estimate how much was spent on Murray during the six-week trial. He said he wasn't sure if producers paid for Murray's new wardrobe, but he was told to bring the doctor to an upscale department store where a tailor was waiting for him. The doctor received several suits, clothes and ties after that trip, he said.

He said Murray was wearing one of the suits he received after the fitting on Monday, when a seven-man, five-woman jury convicted him.

Producers took Murray to dinners at high-end Beverly Hills restaurants where they had "elaborate dinners" complete with expensive wines, champagne and tequila, Perry said.

"You can tell when somebody's owned," he said. "They owned him. It was obvious."

Murray's spokesman, Mark Fierro, said he had not seen reports on Perry's account and could not immediately comment on them.

A spokesman for MSNBC's parent company, NBCUniversal, reiterated an earlier statement that it had licensed the project from the Britain-based company Zodiak Rights and the deal included a promotional interview with Murray that has been airing on NBC's "Today."

"Neither Dr. Murray nor his legal defense were compensated in any way," the statement reads.

Zodiak Productions, which announced hours after Murray's conviction that it had sold the documentary to broadcasters in several countries, also did not return an email message seeking comment.

The man paying the bills was Leon Lecash, a British producer whose company – which is named what's it all about? productions – secured rights to Murray's story before he was charged with Jackson's death in February 2010, Perry said.

Lecash wrote in an email to the Los Angeles Times, which first reported Perry's account, that transportation and meal expenses were "legitimate location production costs." A spokesman for October Films, which was working with Lecash on the project, declined further comment in an email

In the United States, networks and some tabloid outlets have long paid for images or other media that give them some access to newsmakers. ABC News paid $200,000 toward the defense of Casey Anthony, a Florida mother acquitted earlier this year of killing her daughter.

Bryce Nelson, a longtime journalist and professor at USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, said that entertainment outlets that pay sources have put pressure on news divisions to also pay newsmakers.

"It is becoming more common, but that doesn't mean it's right," Nelson said. "You shouldn't buy news and that's what MSNBC seems to be doing."

He said in situations where money is paid toward getting access to those convicted of a crime could be seen as sanctioning the crime, or lead to other improper practices. "Where does this stop?" Nelson asked. "Do you give money to terrorists if they tell their story?"

Murray also grew to have misgivings about the documentary project, Perry said. He recalled the doctor telling him, "'I can't wait until this is over. I'm tired of having these people around all the time.'"

He said he was sometimes told to turn on the cameras in the van that ushered Murray, his family and others during lunch break throughout the trial. It was the one expense Perry says he can account for – the van cost more than $3300 to rent for the duration of the trial.

The Houston-based cardiologist criticizes Jackson in the documentary, which aired in England with the title, "The Man Who Killed Michael Jackson."

"I went there to take care of a healthy man, who said he was fine, to just keep surveillance in case my kids get sick or I get the flu, help us to choose right, better foods, and wash our hands so we don't get infected," Murray said in the film. "But once I got in there I was entrapped."

Perry said he feels sorry for Murray.

"I feel very bad for him," Perry said. "I think he was a good man that was preyed upon by people that felt his guard was down. I feel he was led to make some decisions that caused him to be where he is today."

Murray faces up to four years behind bars when he is sentenced on Nov. 29. He also faces a litany of legal woes, including a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Jackson's father and the loss of his medical license in three states.

Perry says he felt or feels sorry for Murray? Point well made. Murray is playing the "victim". How can someone make you close up shop and administer an anesthetic? Poleezzzzzzzzzzz
It's more of the same poor me crap. He made me do it stuff. Volunteered Victim.

Once again HuffPo has used an inflammatory and misleading headline (IMO) to warrant more people to read this article, and I stand guilty of it. If the subject in question wasn't an extremely controversial person such as Murray I'm not sure it would warrant this attention.

Terms such as "booze-filled" and "lavish" dinners is simply incendiary in that producers and/or other film execs customarily meet together to have meetings, whether one agrees with this or not. Having or owning a 12-seater van is a necessity if it were to fit an entire film crew and actually makes more sense. It would certainly be more egrious if Murray were driven around in a custom limo.

I'm not sure about getting suits paid for him, but if he were to appear in the documentary I don't consider that to be going above or beyond any appropriate standards.

One of Murray's biggest downfalls (other than the facts presented in his trial, of course) is his complete stone-faced expression during the entire trial, save for the tears during testimony of some of his patients. That's just an observation from me, but he didn't appear to show much human emotion, but perhaps he realized he was attending his own funeral.

Reading the posts and reflecting on the situation, I am drawn to the idea that the primary lapse in judgment on the part of Dr. Murray was that there was no other medical professional in attendance. Given the situation as Dr. Murray himself describes it, there should have been nurses in attendance at all times, in addition to Dr. Murray himself. It would not have broken the bank. Michael Jackson was clearly in dire straights. I have great sympathy for anyone who is unable to sleep, as Jackson was. It seems obvious to me, a layman, that anyone taking all the drugs, prescribed or otherwise, that Jackson was taking required constant medical supervision. That is the question I'd like answered. Why wasn't Jackson given the care he needed, not just during the hours before his death, but for the entire time that Murray was employed by him?

He was being paid $150,000.00 a month for what he calls entrapment. I call it a doctor for hire. Boo Hoo Dr. Murray. He's being wined & dined around Santa Monica, being paid, while the Jackson family mourn the loss of their loved one.

What bearing could this possibly have on the case?
Is someone implying that the doctor deliberately prescribed lethal medication for favors from a film crew?
What a fascination the media creates with the trivial and the minute.

This shows Murray for exactly what he is and exactly why the jury found him guilty. He is an amoral, money grubbing, narcissistic leech. He not only killed Michael Jackson but now the good "doctor" exposes the most private, intimate, personal details about Michael's medical history and the last tragic weeks of his life for shiny suits and liquor. Such a betrayal of trust is staggering. This evisceration of Jackson in front of the world is unparalleled and beyond comprehension not to mention in direct violation of HIPPA. And what are Chernoff and Flanagan doing participating in this trash? Murray, MSNBC, NBC, Lecash, Zodiak Productions are all maggots feasting on the dead.

So you call it trust
But I say it's just
In the devil's game
Of greed and lust

They don't care
They'd do me for the money
They don't care
They use me for the money

If you show me the cash
Then I will take it
If you tell me to cry
Then I will fake it
If you give me a hand
Then I will shake it
You do anything for money

Anything, anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil

And now he's given life with just a slap on the wrist for killing Michael Jackson. America has a truly an insane and inhumane judicial system and citizen jurors with intellect or intelligence.

There is a difference between manslaughter and murder.
He had no intent on killing MJ.
He was just outrageously incompetent.
It is beyond malpractice and the system is dealing with him appropriately.
He will go to jail and then be detained in his home.
And he will lose is Doctor's license.
08:51 PM on 11/13/2011
The system has slapped his wrist and said "Don't do this again." He probably will not go to jail and his house arrest is not a big deal since he probably lives in splendor with the money he took from M.J. Losing his MD license is no big deal either. He'll make more money with movie contracts and book writing and the lecture circuit.

He can't get more than four years maximum, where did you get "life"?
08:40 PM on 11/13/2011
My point is that he should have given the death penalty instead of giving him his life back because he probably will not do prison time and will make money writing books and/or have contracts with movie companies to make movies or even a TV sitcom!

This is just another case of greed. I'm sure that many of these high ended movie stars have their own personal physician who will write out prescriptions to whatever they need or want. I believe that Elvis did have his own physician.

Murray is a selfish man who has a polished exterior to cover up the ugliness that lives inside this man. A 6' 5", 240 # man who wears expensive suits and talks with very soft voice. He never shows overt anger and is very very careful of how he phrases his opinions. He talks about his concern for others and yet we see this man who is almost 60 yrs old as the father of 5 children with as many women as their mothers. Wasn't the whole drama concerning the saddness and demons in Michael Jackson's life centered about Michael's lack of an involved and caring father when he was young? When someone defending Murray starts up with Murray and his charity medical clinics...someone should tell him that "charity begins at home" is not just a catchy saying. The type of women Murray dates is telling...young,impressionable,immature....and probably very needy. These phony humanitarians like Murray all have one thing in common....despite all the good and personal sacrifice they like to take credit for...they ALL manage to live extremely well. They all manage to live in luxury and avoid any type of personal deprivation. He was so interested in getting on the Jackson gravy train he said yes to the outrageous. No one with any medical knowledge would ever use propofol as a primary sleep agent in someone's home.

I saw a news clip of one of his office staff saying Dr Murray has 8 children and she said he has 2 children with 'a couple of them'.
And, yeah, although his patients testified about his concern for them, he sure did close his practice really fast when the money and prestige were better elsewhere.

There are many greedy, manipulative men in much more powerful situations who have stolen millions of dollars from taxpayers, etc. This came to me after reading your first two sentences and I thought of Kwame Kilpatrick, although there are so many of his ilk in government. Sorry, I was sidetracked.

He killed MJ but didn't murder him.
That's why he was found guilty of manslaughter.
