Flying Over Earth Video Captures Gorgeous Time-Lapse (VIDEO)

Flying Over Earth Video

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/13/11 10:29 AM ET Updated: 11/13/11 11:49 AM ET

This video might be the coolest part of your weekend.

Made with NASA photos taken 240 miles above Earth at the International Space Station, the gorgeous time-lapse documents some of the world's most stunning views. Pay close attention to the Aurora Borealis, featured in the first two shots.

Artist Michael König edited the piece. Check out raw footage of Earth courtesy of NASA.

A similar video also made the rounds in September.

What is the red squiggly line at 3:47 and 4:37, the great wall? That's the only thing I can guess it is.

It is a sight to behold and wonderful! It looks like the earth's crust is reaching the boiling point in many areas. Has underwater nuclear testing caused enough of a disruption to the ocean floor that too much heat has escaped through the barrier? It looks like it is coming from the bottom up not from the atmosphere.

When Palin said she could see Russia from her house, everybody was laughing. Whose laughing now?

It was not that fact that she said she could see Russia from her house that was funny. Us smarter than a fifth grader types know there is a land mass in the U.S. that is fairly close to Russia.

The funny part is that she boasted that as her foreign policy bona-fides.

I always figured Sarah was from outer space but thought she lived in Alaska, not a space station.

All that illumination from 240 miles above earth? Imagine the wattage there... Sheesh. And that's to say nothing of the other fuel consumption going on that is less visible. Seeing this is like imagining the earth undergoing an X ray under God's watchful eye....patrolling the earth from high above. A watchtower to the extreme. Is it any question why Aliens would be fascinated by looking down on all this...wondering..what are those lights down there? Why does it seem that there are stars imbedded IN THEIR EARTH? And why in certain places and not others. Of course they have to get closer to do a fly by and see it for themselves. To think one needs to go 240 mile up into the atmosphere to get the full blown curvature of the earth to get this kind of perspective. Next time how about pointing out the pyramids, the grand canyon, and great wall of China..get a little closer.

Thank you for movie. It is alarming to see all of the man-made lights in such perspective. How are electric lights made? Primarily from burning coal and other resources -- causing global warming.

There are too many people on the earth. We need massive birth control remedies. Give birth control to all women free of charge and let them decide whether to use it. That would solve much of the problem.

We need alternative energies that don't cause global warming.

it's amazing how trivial and puny our problems seem in comparison with the awesomeness of mother nature. from down here we all live in the "now bubble" of what goes on everyday in OUR LIVES and don't care about how our actions affect the world around us

Stunning and beautiful! I hate to politicize any of the footage, but it's amazing to see the magnitude of the light we humans give off from the land we inhabit throughout Earth. Enough to see the reflection on the panels of the space station. In my opinion, it lends visual credence to the notion that humans have made a tremendous impact on this planet. This view from space really allows us to step back and say, 'yeah, I can see how our vital atmosphere is being affected by what we do as humans.' I look at all that light from our cities and have a hard time understanding how anyone could deny that we have a profound effect on the health of our own atmosphere.
