Frank Miller: Occupy Wall Street 'Louts, Thieves & Rapists,' Comic Writer Says

Frank Miller

Frank Miller has spent much of his famed comic book writing career creating dark, urban dystopias, but the groundbreaking scribe has little regard for the chaos he says reigns at Zuccotti Park.

The man behind such famed comic series as "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns," "Sin City" and "300," in fact, is entirely against the Occupy Wall Street movement.

"'Occupy' is nothing but a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness," Miller wrote in a blog entry last week. "These clowns can do nothing but harm America."

Though, for the most part, the participants in the now-global Occupy moment have protested the imbalances of the economy, corporate fiscal abuses and government officials' close ties to Wall Street, Miller mentions the War on Terror in his slamming of the nascent movement.

"Wake up, pond scum. America is at war against a ruthless enemy," he later continues. "Maybe, between bouts of self-pity and all the other tasty tidbits of narcissism you've been served up in your sheltered, comfy little worlds, you've heard terms like al-Qaeda and Islamicism."

Miller then implores protestors to join the military, or otherwise, to go "back to your mommas' basements and play with your Lords Of Warcraft."

In his work, Miller's protagonists often face off against corrupt government officials. Batman, in both "The Dark Knight Returns" and "The Dark Knight Strikes Again" is faced with heavy governmental opposition, with the latter featuring an especially oppressive and corrupt government.

In 2006, Miller announced that he would have Batman take on Osama bin Laden in "Holy Terror, Batman!" but later dropped Batman from the book; it became "Holy Terror," and has been highly criticized for being hatefully anti-Islam.

In a blog entry on his own site posted in September, Miller calls the book "propaganda," a sort of throw-back to when Captain America punched Hitler, rips the news media as slanted propaganda in its own right, and says, "3000 of my neighbors were murdered. My country was, utterly unprovoked, savagely attacked. I wish all those responsible for the Atrocity of 9/11 to burn in hell."

There have been a few articles & statements (from Alan Moore) relating to the fascist nature of Frank Miller's work

But there seem to be a couple of widespread misunderstands about the nature of fascism:

Fascism is not the same as Nazism. Putting it simply, Nazism is a kind of racist fascism but you don't have to be racist to be a fascist. Fascism is, again simply, the belief that it is legitimate to use force in order to impose your will.

Another misunderstanding is that a fascists always desire to impose a huge centralised state which controls its citizens every move. Historically, they haven't, fascists have never called for spent money to be spent on things like state run medical care or welfare benefits programmes, because only the strong deserve to prosper... historically what that fascists always wanted from the state is huge amounts of money spent on the military & the police. I'm not sure maybe Frank Miller would agree with that?

First off Frank, its WORLDS of Warcraft NOT Lords. Secondly, you think it wise to piss off the very people who made 'The Dark Knight' such a success in the first place? I'm sure they will all return to their parents' basements, and NEVER buy ANYTHING with your name on it AGAIN.

Holy unemployment!

What I'm hearing in the underground is Batman and most of his superhero friends do support the Occupy movement and the 99%. They are also reading and promoting "The new Common Sense" a document which has surfaced in the last couple of weeks and is making waves on the internet :http://pastebin.com/gm2UV08D

Sometimes talent and confidence and then success can still come from a complete DICK. Way to cut your fans down Miller , I'm sure they are going to be willing to shell out lots of money for your old shell game.

Actually, it's frightening how often talent, confidence, and success come from a complete DICK.

Why would anyone pay attention to these adolescent insults from an admitted bigot? Frank Miller is not the first good artist who turned out to be a pathetic human being... among fellow fascist-ranters, Ezra Pound comes first to mind.

PS. For all his encouragement that the occupy protestors join the Marines, I found no evidence of military service in Frank Millier's bio and no evidence of combat outside of Hell's Kitchen and Hollywood. Miller looks like another chicken-hawk to me.

Pay no attention to Frank's rantings because, really, as much as I used to like this guy I've never thought of him as being iconic. He once had some incredible enthusiasm and cleverness that made up for his lacking skills. Once he bought the press and believed his fans he stopped trying as hard. When people suddenly saw how uninspiring his efforts were his sales lagged. Just in time to salvage his waning sales he jumps on the rabid anti-Islamist band wagon, like so many other entertainers with waning careers. Suddenly he gets a spike in sales but it doesn't last. Now he puts out this tripe, many years too late, and just as flawed (or worse) than his last attempt at doing Batman and now he's in full rant against the OWS crowd and the neo-hippies.
Frank, you were just never as good as your press and you're not too old to apply the old passion. Get a grip and get back to reality. You were at least fun, once. Don't blame the events of 9-11 and the cretinous terrorists. A lot of people were hurt on that day and they've endeavored to move forward. So should you. Nurturing a hatred for an entire people will get you nowhere, and you can just pick up any book on WW ll to see what passionate hatred led to in the last century.

Victoria Jackson is doing the same thing, being shocking to try to salvage her sinking career. Why can't these people just accept that their careers are fading & go away?
